Empire Files: Abby Martin Exposes Steve Bannon

Second on boo for the theatrics; it's a good recap of him from stories I've heard elsewhere and good to see put together, but I could do without the theatrics and a couple of odd non-sequiturs throughout.

Radiohead's Motion Picture Soundtrack, all brass cover.

Can Trump read?

asynchronice says...

I think this is a tad bit overblown; I have to review agreements, (T&C/MSA/etc.) all the time and sometimes the wording is INTENTIONALLY vague and broad, and sometimes legal meanings of words and phrases are not the common definitions. It's why you have legal counsel.

I'm no fan of Trump, by any stretch, but a 70-year old dude who doesn't like to read fine print isn't terribly surprising to me.

Ghost In The Shell - Trailer #2

"kindergarten up-skirt tee hee" is perhaps the best phrase to date to explain why anime very frequently irritates me. Thank you.

Fortunately, a western adaptation will also tone down any kindergarten up-skirt tee hee, if present. Hard core Japanese anime isn't necessarily all good.

And I would add you cannot simply separate the individual and the institution. You may like them more or less, but they are reporting to the same leadership and controls as their peers. And I agree with sentiment that anyone with a reputation to uphold would not be on that network unless they had no other options.

Fine to hear a story, but at best a secondary source.

Will the U.S. Presidential Election Be Rigged?

asynchronice says...

Group Think / Herd Mentality do not equal 'rigged election'. You can complain about the media coverage, you can complain about campaign finance being broken, and of course gerrymandering, and you could easily make a valid point. But the implication of the 'rigged election' is direct manipulation, which is an ENTIRELY different matter; it's dangerous to play fast and lose with words when you have a populist movement that wants to believe anything.

Penn Jillette on many many things

I disagree on many points, but I respect the man. However, it irks me that the 'ask' is to straight to 'Gary Johnson'. Why don't Libertarians starting getting into local government and implementing policy, show that it works ? The other parties had to build coalitions and prove their policies work. Why do I only really hear about Libertarians on the presidential election ? And why should I take a risk on a candidate with ideals but no background/data/experience/party to back it up ?

george carlin-how language is used to mask truth

asynchronice says...

I think you're taking a very narrow view on the point he eventually arrives to at the end. Shellshocked/PTSD/Battle Fatigue is the perfect example of the exact same thing being watered down into it's least offensive 'sounding' form. It's not two different things (say stupidity vs dyslexic). By using the raw form for something unpleasant, we don't get to mask the ugliness from anyone and we perhaps have a greater chance of dealing with it in some way.

He was certainly ahead of his time; I had a friend's FB post come up requesting 'tone-policing' because he felt the term 'hookers and blow' was disrespectful to sex workers. It makes my brain hurt.

Still, I know a lot of the Sift audience wants to think that Carlin's point rings true. But does anyone think that it would be more useful, more constructive, and more honest, to call every learning disability 'stupidity'? How would that help us in any way? What could we accomplish with the help of this 'honesty'?

Personally, I exclusively prefer hot grills.

Mesmerising perhaps to japanophiles. Looks odd to me. I'd keep that opinion to myself but i want to voice some kind of dissent because i feel that in this day and age, we shouldn't be buying/selling videos based on the words "hot grill" being in the title. Not least because if you don't agree with the grill being hot, you're gay or a straight female there's not much here for you that can't be found in greater quality elsewhere. But i'm a bitter cynic, so continue to ignore me.

Gruesome Verses from Bible Disguised as Quran

asynchronice says...

I marvel how deftly Christians can selectively believe and remember the good things and just totally ignore the rest, and blithely assume that's what everyone does instinctively. It must be the age of the religion, where it just becomes commonplace to ignore the really old bits.
