Franken Reads 4th Amendment to Justice Department Official

DudeMan says...

>> ^curiousity:
Some people are missing the point.
Senator Franken asks how this is compatible with the US Constitution....
Mr. Kris responds by talking about how the courts approved "warrantless foreign surveillance" and wants to use that as a baseline to start the conversation. But how do you use a court agreement approving this for foreign surveillance to the US Patriot Act which is being used for US criminal cases as a baseline? That isn't foreign surveillance.

I was expecting to hear the good Senator from Minnisota to verbally bitch-slap Mr. Kris on that point. I kept yelling at my monitor, "THAT'S GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH WIRETAPS IN AMERICA!!"

I want to see more from that hearing, hopefully there was more to that exchange than we saw.

Marijuana bust exposes vague law

DudeMan says...

Being a Spokanite I was not surprised that this happened, the cops here are bored and always looking for new ways to harass its citizenry. What amazes me is the baffling interpretation of the law they used to "justify" the arrests.

"At issue is a provision in the voter approved law that allows caretakers to supply up to 1.5 pounds of marijuana “at any one time” to those with state-issued medical marijuana cards.

Dispensaries like Change have patients check in and check out and prohibit more than one customer from being in the supply room at a time, which they argue complies with the “one at a time” provision. But Spokane County prosecutors say the provision limits each caretaker to just one patient – period – and businesses such as Change with multiple customers are illegal."

Why Squatter Cities Are A Good Thing

DudeMan says...

I lived and worked in those favelas in and around Sao Paulo. I think that while he completely ignores the lawless underbelly of the squatter cities, he also makes some very good points. By our standards in the west, the living conditions are reprehensible. But when you compare the living standards most of the people had in rural areas it is vast improvement. I also agree that for many of the people it is a stepping stone to a better life because of the educational and entrepreneurial opportunities to which they now have access.
