Quickest way to defuse a car bomb in Iraq

Run over it with a tank.
AeroMechanicalsays...

Those tanks are pretty tough, specifically designed to withstand landmines. All the same, it seems like it would be easier to just detonate it with some small explosives or something from a safe distance. If there are a lot of homes nearby or something though, I suppose the tank method would absorb a lot of the blast. I would think they would move the vehicle filming it further away and that the gunner (or commander, or whoever that guy on top is) would have buttoned up. Or was this not intentional?

When god gives you lemons .... ehhh ... not sure where this is going, but you should drive over a car bomb with a tank.

You can tell by the debris from the explosion that they're sitting behind a window, which I'm guessing is designed to be bulletproof and sturdy enough to not shudder from a blast like that.

G-barsays...

several years ago, an israeli tank went over a huge concealed bomb. The debris and remains of the tank and its soldiers flew hundred of meters away...

This was a stupid thing to do.

Psychologicsays...

I doubt they would have done it if they had any doubts about the power of the blast. That was a fairly small explosion... I'm guessing they put it there themselves just to make the video.

Then again, it would be pretty funny if they were trying to make a video of the tank running over a random car, not knowing there was an explosive in it.

Couldn't it be that the tank commander got bored and decided to drive over a random car and it turned out to be an IED. I really doubt they would take that risk purposely, you never know how big the IED will turn out to be.

This is a clear illustration of why the government is inherently wasteful: people aren't careful with other people's possessions.

If it was their tank, and not the taxpayer's tank, they probably wouldn't be driving it over bombs.

It seems like the shockwave would have non-negligible health costs for the tank occupants' internal organs and nervous system.

The rigid structure prevents much of that. It could hurt their hearing if loud enough, but the tank's armor would prevent much displacement from taking place (assuming the walls weren't breached or significantly deformed).

chilaxesays...

There was some news in the last couple of months about the sometimes mysterious disorders affecting some soldiers' nervous systems. I don't remember the details, but a search yielded this:

More commonly, injury occurs . . . when a wave of high pressure — a blast-wave — expands outward from the site of an explosion to damage brain and other soft tissue of its victims. Blast-wave injuries may be especially severe for personnel in confined spaces such as the interior of armored vehicles.

ReverendTedsays...

I think it's worth noting that the car they smashed was already charred.
So this was an explosive that survived a fire, or one that was deliberately placed in the vehicle husk.

Wish I could make out the radio chatter at the end.

Well, he's been in this community in a while and actually this was one of his better comments.

Actually I'm glad they did that...if I owned a tank that's EXACTLY what I'd do. Unfortunately I don't have that kind of money, so I'm glad they did it for me. Besides why would you own a tank if it wasn't to run over shit?

Farhad2000says...

Don't believe some titling and naming one a video from Break.

I doubt this was the intention, to run over a car bomb to defuse it.

Rather they were trying to clear it and run over it to flatten it and didn't know there was a bomb or something.
