newtboysays...It's a nice thought, but I think we really you don't need to remember them at all, just their party. It's much easier to just remember Romney, the only remaining Republican who didn't sell out completely.
With luck we can soon forget the party's name too, remembered only as a historical warning to future political parties to reject the politics of fear, hate, and division or perish.
The CDC today recommended not having in person voting at all if possible due to continued, worsening Covid outbreaks, with the only alternative being vote by mail. Request your ballot, don't just assume you get one automatically...don't think you can get one last minute...they WILL be overwhelmed, they WILL fail to get ballots to every registered voter, they won't be able to accommodate last minute requests. This will almost certainly be by design in some areas, and will not be the case at all in others. It will be politicized and taken advantage of for political gains.
Don't be duped out of your vote. Request your mail in ballot today, site the CDC guidelines if your state requires a reason.
Mystic95Zsays...Already registered for my vote by mail ballot... Come on Nov 3rd...
BSRsays...Great advice! Count me in.

StukaFoxsays...I long for the good ol' days, like April 28, 1945.
newtboysays...April 30th was a good day that year too....all of that April was good.
Winter....for Hitler...and Germany.
Springtime....for England...and France.

luxintenebrisjokingly says...oh! i guess y'all do know your history! must have some statues still around?

newtboyjokingly says...Lol.
I'm not a Trumpublican, so I can remember historical monsters without erecting monuments to them.

JiggaJonsonsays...You realize that confederate statues are not OUR history in any shape or form right?
They literally belong to the history of a DIFFERENT country called The Confederate States of America that has nothing to do with us.

newtboysays...Actually it is my history. I was born and raised in Houston, and have blood ties to Lee.
I probably have some family that helped install the statues too.
I can't change that.
That doesn't mean in order to remember the war of Southern Secession (see what I did there?) I must celebrate it. Statues are for heros, the back pages of history books are for traitors.

Mordhaussays...I'll probably vote for Biden, but the rest of my votes have to go Republican for one reason only.
Guns. I am OK with some gun control. But it is clear that no matter what, Democrats will make every attempt they can if they sweep the election to re-do the assault weapon ban, apply punitive taxes to ammo (and possibly guns), and remove the right to private sale.
Bedo was the only one to fully admit it, but Biden has been harsh on guns as well going by comments alone. I don't want Trump back, but I want the Senate to stay Republican to counter gun measures.
I know it's unpopular, but I am one of those people that will never give up my rifles, my pistols, my shotguns, my large capacity clips, and my right to buy as much ammo as I wish without paying another government tax. I also feel I should be able to give or sell my firearms to someone I trust, be it a family member or close friend.
luxintenebrissays...have read a number of Lee descendants were okay w/removing his statues, too. by now, i'd hope, most folks know R.E.L. said statues weren't gonna be helpful.
“I think it wiser, not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings engendered.”
of course, he was talking about a gettysburg memorial, so maybe he was reluctant to have a memorial at the site of his gravest error.
but the issue is like most things: complicated. like the lincoln emancipation memorial. get how the couchant slave is a downer, but the fact former slaves paid for its erection, the model for the slave was t.s. eliott grandpa's gardener, a former escaped slave, and is mohammed ali's direct ancestor - is kinda cool. maybe worth having around just to explain all the details around its history.

newtboysays...I have read that Lee quote too. I think he meant any statues or monuments to the confederacy, but that's just my opinion.
I certainly see a distinction between imperfect but honorable men trying to do right and treasonous racists trying to found a nation rooted in the racist concept that ...."the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery—subordination to the superior race—is his natural and normal condition. "
I, for one, don't demand perfection from my heros, only honor, honesty, and empathy. Claiming other people are subhuman and naturally subordinate fails on all three counts.
I think it's important to evaluate the reasons many monuments were erected, in the case of confederate monuments it was done to oppose civil rights for non whites, install a permanent reminder of the pervasive racism the confederate was founded on, and to misrepresent history to minimize their ancestors treason.
In the case of the Lincoln emancipation monument, it was to celebrate finally officially recognizing the humanity of a large portion of the population. I would hope anyone bothered by it's depictions 1)understands the history of its creation (thanks for that) and 2)offers to replace it at their expense rather than demand its removal at taxpayer expense.
