Michael Moore Calls Out ABC on its Own Labor Practices

I really am starting to warm up to Michael Moore. Skip to 3:50 for the meat and potatoes.

I find he over simplifies things sometimes. he only realy dose stuff on things that everyone with half a brain is aware of but at least he some how is popular so brings it to the masssees more and the mainstreem midea seems to get on with him a fair bit , comapred to other documentry makers who make far more informative and factual films.

Michael Moore is such a badass. I've been a fan ever since Roger & Me. He's smart, funny, gutsy and a good filmmaker to boot. Getting people out to see a documentary can be tough for even the best in the genre, yet Michael Moore, time after time, continues to fill seats and rake in Box Office returns that rival those of mainstream features. He also seems to have lost some weight. Good for you, Mike.

I used to think he had some talent but he is a hack with contrived confrontations and stunts. Crime scene tape? Awkward standoffs with security guards? That's all he can do. I doubt he's got anything in the way of a reform agenda.

I think it's important to keep in mind that in the end he is making movies. He isn't a senator or legislator, he's an entertainer. An entertainer that hopes to use his art to open the eyes of everyday people and in doing so make reform and the evolution of our society possible. Sure he uses cheesy gag setups to get across a point, but he does it well.

I get what you're saying but I think the subjects he tackles deserve better and smarter treatment. I won't forget when he lays the emotional blackmail on old Charlton Heston and leaves a photo of a gun victim on his property. That's just hectoring of the lowest order.
He can make much better films and he has a platform to do so.

I agree, but those documentaries would (and do) bore the shit out of everyday people. His style obviously works, seeing how successful his films are.

Marxists want the workers to own the means of production, even through violent takeover (Not saying Moore is a Marxist). They don't mind if someone else takes all the risk in building that company, as long as they get a slice of the pie if its successful.

"Fair" is never fair in a democracy. It typically means stealing.

Moore seems to think the freelancers (who he probably got fired after this interview) need to be permanent employees with benefits. Why? I am a freelancer and I work for an hourly wage I set and is fair, and I don't go asking my clients for health insurance or to make me a permanent employee. Actually, to the contrary, they want to make me fulltime, and I don't want to be.

@ Blankfist -
You must make some decent coin then as a freelancer. I'm guessing you're paying what.. 250 a month for health insurance? If not you're either rich, a veteran, or one broken leg away from moving in with your parents permanently. The ABC guys also have to live in Manhattan and that ain't cheap. MTV does the same with their employees. I had friends who lived in the city and worked for them, they lived paycheck to paycheck and had no chance at saving cash when half their check went to rent.

Full employment means $40 a month health insurance, free life insurance and a 401k. There's no way you can tell me people are gonna turn that down willingly unless they're earning a ton. A lot more than some lighting crew guy does.

All relative I guess.

Corporations don't care if their employees can afford health insurance. They are assuming the state and other private institutions will take care of these people, through medicaid and the ER.

Jeez, why am I not surprised that Westy doesn't like Michael Moore. Does this guy like anything?

I don't dislike him particularly , I just think his fame is maby not that deserved , im sure there are many others who have made far better documentaries that we just don't know the names of, I think he sometimes undermines his argument in the process of making his films more aces sable and entertaing (ambush interviewing people , When he dosent necaseraly need to.

Thats the thing realy , His documentaries are more entertainment than documentary , I'm fine with him doing reasonably well and being famous from his work , I would just like other documentary makers to be elevated to the same heights and not reside in obscurity.

I don't think I dislike him though , I don't know enough about him as a person to make that jugment. But His skin on his face dose seem a bit lose.

There's a difference between what's fair and what people have a right to. Life isn't always fair.

I disagree. Both notions of fairness and of rights exist only in the human mind, and are granted by the society to individuals. I personally believe that people have the right to be payed a living wage for their labor. You may disagree and think that while it's unfair for people to be taken advantage of, others still have the right to take advantage of them. I fail to see the distinction. If you say that people have the right to cheat (to behave unfairly), the next obvious question is why should we grant that the status of a right?

I once thought Moore was an amazing individual, a hero even. Battling the monsters of the right wing media. But after watching "Manufacturing Dissent" for Canadian Film last year my respect for the man dropped about ten notches.

spoco2says...

Have you spent any time looking into the validity of that movie? Being that it would seem it's primary contention is that Moore lied about actually having an interview with Roger Smith of GM for the movie Roger and Me... and seeing as they have no proof that this ever happened... and in fact

The claim of a second meeting at the Waldorf Astoria hotel appears to be contradicted by Smith himself, who said in a 1990 interview with the LA Times that "I've never stayed at the Waldorf."

I think you'll find it's a beatup on Moore with no factual back up.

For every one of Moores docos you can go and look up all of his claims, all of his facts, everything he says. Can you do the same for Manufacturing Dissent?

I haven't seen it, so I can't really comment on it, but just as people should indeed check everything that Moore presents in his films, so should you check what you see in that one.

Don't take ANY one film maker's view as gospel truth without checking the facts.

He definitely has an agenda when he sets out to make his movies, there's no denying that. These are not impassive documentaries, they are a film maker having a point he wants to get across and doing so as best he can. The facts and figures he uses are real, and of course there will be some cherry picking where it suits. But I think you'll find the actual points made are true, and the actual point of the movies is always rooted in a real truth as well.

I like his stuff, I DON'T think he is unbiased at all, but I think he answers any and all fair criticism thrown at him.
