May well be the stupidest thing ever said in a church

Wife of mega-church pastor Joel Osteen is awarded no points for her idiotic statement.
EMPIREsays...

ghark... are you serious? this is completely idiotic.

"Do good for your own self. Do good because God wants you to be happy".

See the retarded contradiction?

If she had simply said: "Do good for your own self". Period. That was fine (as fine as something a fucking mega-church pastor could say).

Or... "Do good for your own self. Because it makes you happy. God isn't needed in this picture. Do good for yourself". That would also be acceptable

EMPIREsays...

It has nothing to do with being religious or not, it has to do with making no sense and contradicting oneself.

Oh look another atheist posting a religious video that doesn't jibe with their world view. News at 11.

HenningKOsays...

Yeah, I don't get the contradiction either. You want to be happy, and god wants you to be happy too. Doing good makes both parties happy, so do it. Mutually beneficial arrangement... that's an easy way to interpret it and I'm sure what she meant.
I know a lot of Christians are going nuts over this though, because doing good (or anything) for yourself is apparently the most blasphemous thing ever... everything you do, do it for God's glory and all that.

VoodooVsays...

The contradiction is that she says that when you're doing good, it's not for god, it's for you.

..but doing good is what makes god happy. so obviously you should do good...for the sake of god.

she specifically says it's not for god..then 2 seconds later contradicts herself. Again, she could have easily corrected herself and said it was both...but no, she didn't.

enochsays...

if you view this video with a western theosophy perspective,in which god is externalized, then yes..this clip makes no sense.
but if you view this with a more eastern theosophy, where god/gods are internalized, then this woman would not be so confusing.

the olsteens preach the 'prosperity gospel".though they deny it when asked directly, but thats what they preach, with a side order of mutated gnosticism.

To me it seems she's using the 'logic' that the reason people do 'good' may or may not be intended to 'please god', either way god is pleased by the 'good deeds', but the true reason people try to 'please god' is not altruistic, it's all to gain 'god's favor' for their own personal gain and happiness (if only in the afterlife) and therefore it's actually selfish and self serving when thoroughly analyzed. It makes sense to me.

These people are con artists, nothing more. What they say has -no- importance, not to them, not to us, not even to their victims (who appear to be too stupid to parse the statements anyway)...it's just a collection of pretty sounds to get people habituated to agreeing, before they drop the appeal for donations.

*controversy

It's a contradiction because she says, "It's not for God" then says, "It makes God happy".

That said, I'm guessing the crowd wasn't exactly with her. In fact, I think she may have been trying to convince herself based on my reading of her facial and vocal microexpressions.

DuoJetsays...

Sure, it's stupid, but it's far from the stupidest thing ever said in church. I'd wager that it's not in the top 5 stupidest things said that session.

VoodooVsays...

Since it's a mega church, by that name alone, you know they care about one thing and one thing alone.

money

(don't get me wrong, I think church has always been about power and money, mega churches are just more blatant about it)

Same idea, more succinctly stated.

She seemed to have a little bit of a problem expressing herself there. While this would perhaps fail a logic diagram, the meaning is conveyed nonetheless...and I think that 'doing good for your own personal sake' is far from a stupid thing to say in a place of enlightenment.

I'm not religious, but if this is why you're an atheist as suggested by your playlist, you might need to try harder =P.
