John Cleese on Sarah Palin

The former Monty Python star shares his unsparing thoughts and views about GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin

Why do I continually get the distinct feeling that the average European is more intelligent than the average American? Granted, John Cleese is no "average European", but...it just seems this way.

^it seems that way because maybe it's true. In Europe we still have the remains of this thing called "Education", and it's hard to live more than 200 miles away from a university. Obviously there's great intellects and great dumbasses in every part of the world, but if you had to bet on a winner...

While i think the talking parrot comment might have been the most accurate description of Palin i've heard to date...

I'm sorry but I think the "europeans > americans" education is pretty flawed... there are good schools and bad schools... and smart people and well... not so much...

The 200 miles away from a university is an absurd point... I don't have a statistic to back it... but if you look at the US population the VAST majority meet that same criteria... The only states that wouldn't would be ones with huge territory and small population... alaska... montana... etc...

Just seems like a silly point to hang your hat on... and not sure how this video in any way illustrates that this particular European has a good grasp (in my opinon) on Sarah Palin... it says nothing more than that.

Nailed it.

Now there are lots of truly intelligent people in the US, though there is a vastly large percentage who are not. How is that population divvied up? Well, the US is a nation of immigrants after all. I suspect it is those very immigrants that are bringing in the intellectual capital which is maintaining the intellectual bar, preventing it from collapsing into a drooling mess. Though... it is likely a losing battle. The typical anti birth control redneck produces far more children than a community of intellectuals.

In such a case, intelligence does not win the day. He who procreates the most maintains the moronic majority.

I'm afraid our (European) advantage is that our most obnoxious politicians speak obscure languages.

Also most countries in Europe have systems that either do not have an almighty president (France being the exception) or are ruled by coalitions (UK excepted, but I'm not sure they'll consider themselves European anyway), which fortunately gives the impression that on the whole we're all moderate liberals.

"Second of all, Everyone thinks that Palin is a dumbass and that she is a joke of a VP candidate."

Corrected for you

Even McCain knows it. My guess, and thats all it is, a guess, is that come November, if MccCain wins, they'll suddenly find a way to get her out of office, and replace her with someone who has half a clue.

This explains why as a journalism major she cannot name a single magazine - she may very possibly had had herself voluntarily brainwashed to the point where she has lost the skill of thinking on her feet and answering a question based on opinion and analysis.

There is a different approach to accountability. While Americans feel entitled to bear arms, Europeans feel obliged to be informed; to watch and listen and pick apart their administrations, where necessary.

Claiming that living within a proximity to a university creates a more intelligent populous is like claiming that living within a proximity to Russia gives you foreign policy experience.

What's Ah-maze-zeeng to me is that foreigners think that they have any clue regarding the ability of any US Citizen to hold any office in these United States.

Keep spinning the waaaay dead Monty Python angle. Or, maybe get a new job?
