Meh. I'm not keen on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to begin with, but that's just because I'm not fond of Jams / Jellies.

However, I can tell you that when I DO eat peanut butter, I can't stand "fresh". Generally they're slimy, have no texture, and they run. A lot. So, what that effectively means is that if you're like me and enjoy a good amount of Peanut butter on your sandwich, fresh won't get the job done, it'll run off the side and leave you with a skiff. Adding heat will only make that worse.

Also, I know this is neither here nor there, but I'm not feeling the retardation of making a sandwich. (I.e. slathering as much peanut butter on and then slapping on the top half, a la 1:42.) Don't know why, but that 'example' just annoys me to no end.

Three rookie mistakes being made in this video:

1. Spreading the filling evenly. You want it thicker at the edges.
2. Not buttering the bread first. Everybody skips this because they imagine peanut butter does the job by itself.
3. Mixing jam and peanut butter. Eugh. Peanut butter and marmite sandwiches are the king.

@Shepppard I agree whole heartedly.

Idk what she's talking about "processed peanut butter will make your sandwich oily and gross"
ANY time I've tried the 'All Natural!' crap I'm always having to deal with that sick layer of oil on top every time I want to get some peanut butter love.

Furthermore, wtf is wrong with these people and the additions to the PBnJ to jazz it up? I can see cinnimon, honey (possibly), bananas, etc. But, fuck, can you even still call it a PBnJ when it's got sriracha and chives on it? (sick)

On another note,
Being a huge fan of peanut butter myself, I would like to whole heartedly reccommend the Omega-3 Jiff peanut butter that comes in the jar with the green lid. I bought it originally b/c I wanted to be healthy but it's hands down THE best peanut butter I've ever had and I've continued to buy it over the past year or two b/c I love the taste compared with other peanut butters I've tried.

EDIT: I've grilled my PBnJ's before, it's okay from time to time, but purists will call it sacrileg!

I guess I'm in the opposite camp as I only go for all natural peanut butter. I can't stand the taste of processed peanut butters anymore. It's the different oils (palm, cottonseed, rapeseed, soybean) that most manufacturers use; it does give the peanut butter an off taste, at least to me. Regarding the oil on top of natural peanut butters, that's just due to settling. Just pour off half of it and take five minutes to mix it up with the rest of the jar, you get a nice, thick, rich peanut butter that isn't going anywhere.

Also, I implore you to take a chance and spread your favorite peanut butter over a grilled hamburger one day. I had the same reaction until I tried it. C'est magnifique!

I have to agree with @Shepppard, give me the processed stuff! I don't do peanut butter and jelly but that's because I also am not a fan of jelly/jam. I do love peanut butter though (when I was a kid, my grandparents would send a jar with me to school because I was a picky eater)

I do eat peanut butter a certain way though. Now I only eat it on warm toast (wheat is best) with whole peanuts or pecans smashed into the gooey warm peanut butter.

Jinxsays...

Fuck peanuts, they are trying to kill me. Its all about the Cashew Nut butter + Marmalade. Oh, and a Tea. Dont dare drink it without your pinky extended. Classless plebs.

I've never understood the spreads only sandwiches. A sandwich has to have substance! Lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, ham, salami, olives, spring onion, mayo, whole gran mustard, etc. I do like peanut butter, jam, Vegemite, but only on slices of toast with plenty of butter.

I'm hungry now

PB&J has always grossed me out. Although I will go for a plain peanut butter sandwich sometimes when I'm really lazy about preparing food.

I'm in my mid-thirties and still grossed out by most of the same exact things that grossed me out as a kid. One of them being drippy oozy goop coming out of the sides of a sandwich. Like the jelly in a PB&J... Blecch.. squicks me out.

Another thing... butter on sandwiches... I have been grossed out by this ever since my depression-era grandmother used to slather as much butter as peanut butter onto my sandwiches, and then force me to eat it all even though I'd be gagging and retching... I know, poor me, first world problems, etc.. GTFO with your BS, kids get grossed out when you fill their mouth with disgusting goop.

Only thing I agree with in this video is using a lower sugar jam. My problem with most jellies and jams is they have so much sugar its hard to distinguish the actual fruit flavors. I'm willing to give them the fresh made peanut butter vs. processed as a matter of taste, the rest is just pretentious crap.

Sarzysays...

This is the wrongest batch of wrong in the history of wrong. A sandwich with natural peanut butter might be perfectly tasty, but if you want a classic PB&J sandwich, it's gotta be Jif or Skippy or Peter Pan or one of the store-bought kinds. PB&J is classic comfort food -- it and "gourmet" should not be in the same sentence.

But then I guess I should expect this kind of nonsense from a co-owner of a place that has the balls to serve nothing but peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and to charge five bucks (or more!) per sandwich. Five bucks! For a sandwich that literally takes less than a minute to prepare, and that has about 25 cents worth of ingredients (if that).
