How do you distinguish Americans?

International students at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan were recently asked what they think distinguishes Americans from other people around the world. There is very little distinguished about it. Not a surprise.

Actually, a lot of that is much more positive than I would have guessed...

Heck, I'd be quite a bit more critical than that in my own assessment of "average American tourist outside of the US", even though I am an American living in Thailand myself.

If the people asking the question were American that would have affected the response.
The relationship America has with firearms, christianity and capitalism is what most europeans I know (a pretty good cross section) would highlight..
And topically what the hell is going on with their police force at the moment..

I would assume these people are referring to Americans they actually know irl. Not perceptions based on what they hear about America or see in media. They are at an International school where they are in contact with american students. I'm guessing you don't have many gun happy crazy Christians Americans at an International school.

I live in California (San Francisco Bay Area) and i don't know one practicing god fearing christian or any gun happy crazies. Pretty much the opposite. The part of the country that looks like that ive never seen irl. Of course it's just my personal experience.

Thats a pretty foxnews-esq generalization of the US... if anything i think it highlights the very wide gape between perception and reality.

I'm not endorsing generalization (or expressing an opinion about Americans), but the comments in this video seem rather more polite and insipid than I'd expect.
Europeans in my experience and in the media have very strong opinions when differentiating Americans from locals.

Being pedantic, yes.

So are Brazilians, Argentinians, Chileans, Peruvians, Bolivians and so on.
Also Cubans, Jamaicans, Haitians, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans (who are actually in the process of becoming a US state, I believe?) and other island nations of the Americas.

No idea where people from Guam or American Samoa fit in.
