1. Letterman is past his prime and has turned his show into a relatively unfunny 'bitter old coot' set of rants. His ratings were in the toilet, especially with the Conan takeover hype. He wanted controversy, and he went after what he thought was an easy target.

2. His chosen controversy was idiotic at best. Joking about raping any female no matter how old they are is execusable. I don't buy his faux-apology. He knew what he was doing and just didn't care because he wanted ratings and he dislikes Palin and therefore considers her and her family sub-human. He was and is a douche.

3. The protesters are idiots. Letterman was a douche. Go ahead and LET him be a douche. Calling for him to be fired is just sad. If you don't like what he says, then turn to another channel. That's what everyone else does if you go by the ratings... Or if you feel really strong, do the product boycot thing.
