"Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africas District 9 as the worlds nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United, a private company uninterested in the aliens welfare they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe, contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9."

I assume it's a good thing that this doesn't appear to be attached to a major studio. Then I read that they are owned by Sony. So I don't know how big a release this will be. Normally you'd expect this to be set in the states and have some big names.

Peter Jackson isn't a big enough name for you? It feels more real to me that it is set in South Africa without the "big-name stars". I'm tired of seeing the same old movie plots with the same old actors...in the same old locations...

Set in Florida: Aliens aren't even noticed amongst all the Haitians and ethnic tension. They end up buying a large block of mobile homes and learn to surf.

Set in California: The aliens get shot upon landing by gang members protecting their turf, drawing the attention of the government. They flee to Northern Cali where they're given refuge and a court battle for their civil rights ensues.

Set in New York: Basing what to do off the movies Independence Day and War of the Worlds the aliens are immediately blown out of the sky.

Set in Texas: All the aliens are thrown in the county jail till a Senator asks to speak with them alone. When he emerges from the room he declares Texas's succession from the union with the help of their new found allies.

Set somewhere in the Mid-West: The Church of Scientology declares their day has come, while other religious groups plea for the destruction of the evil (because they're ugly looking) creatures. The head of the Scientology church uses his vast wealth to build a hovercraft and an alien translator and uses it to have an audience with the aliens on their own ship. After listening to him speak for 30 minutes the alien leader who has been silent all this time looks up and says to him, "Are you fucking nuts?". They shoot him and leave our planet ordering it condemned for the sake of all other alien races.

Yeah, current setting for the movie probably works best.

That's the thing - I wonder if this is going to be an uncompromised sci-fi gem without the usual Hollywood bollocks or if Jackson is there to ensure it's commercial enough. I hope he was there just to give it enough momentum to get it made.

Still I don't understand the fuss about Jackson. The LoTR films were enjoyable but I wouldn't want to see them again soon.

Let's hope that there's a cracking story to go with the visuals.

Why are you guys keeps on bring up Peter Jackson's name? He just "presents" the film. Like how Tarantino "presented" "Hero". Peter Jackson really have nothing to do with the film, they are just piggy back riding each other. The film needed a big name to sell in the states, and apparently ppl are dumb enough to think that the film is made by Peter Jackson.

I hear the original had to do with the xenophobia happening in south africa currently. Now, 15+ years after apartheit, it's not black vs white, it's local vs foreigners .. the foreigners being , zimbabwean, nigerian, angolans etc. these are percieved as bringing more poverty to already poverty striken areas. so with the foreigners drugs and crime follow and so does fear and hatred towards them. I have a couple of zimbabweans employed and can tell you horror stories. the one guy during the violence couldn't reach his wife in a township. clever thing is they patrolled the "taxi" ranks , knowing there was no alternative means of getting into the township. it's like canned lion hunting they get delivered to you neatly wrapped in a box. (for those that don't know the taxi companies run rackets here, so they are normally involved in this sort of stuff)

It's funny, I've been on a sci-fi kick lately myself. Bought and watched Blade Runner again, then read Phillip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", now I'm reading Dick's "The Man in the High Castle". Really looking forward to this film.

That's not really true, Peter Jackson is the producer of the film, and it's made by his production company Wingnut Films. Slashfilms.com describes director Neill Blomkamp as a protégé of Peter Jackson. I'm betting Jackson is responsible for this being made into a major movie, and had a good deal of input and oversight into it.

I agree it's irritating when studios give first billing to someone besides the director or lead actor in a transparent attempt to mislead audiences. But this is nowhere near as egregious as the crap Tarentino and Spielberg have pulled many times.

This is also the same team who may potentially make the Halo movie. Rumor has it that this is a sort of field test in that department. Studios have backed off, but if this does well enough it may give them the momentum to get the movie made.
