RedSkysays...

I feel like the Doom franchise will forever represent what people generally uninformed about gaming think games are like. Not that that's a bad thing necessarily.

ChaosEnginesays...

I know what you mean.

Too slow, scripted executions (that repeated almost instantly), it just doesn't feel like Doom.

Serious Sam has already done a far better version of modern Doom anyway.

I am entirely unenthused about this. Watching the actual gameplay footage made me yawn, which is heartbreaking.

NirnRootsays...

It looks like Call of Duty with an excess of blood and guts. It looks like Bethesda the saw the popularity of BrutalDoom and decided it was solely the gore and over-the-top fatalities that made it so loved.

Then again, its difficult to tell what is in-engine cutscene and what is actual gameplay (for instance, the "grab the shotgun" bit is almost certainly a cutscene) so it is probably to early to decide if the video is in any way indicative of the actual gameplay.

I think Painkiller actually followed in Doom's footsteps more closely in terms of atmosphere. And there was no shortage of things to shoot at in Painkiller either.
That said, I doubt I'll ever forget the first time I heard the distant screams of headless bombers.

Ahh yes, painkiller.. the game with a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning... that could only be more awesome if had tits and was on fire!!

thanks, Yahtzee!

Agree about the atmosphere but I think Serious Sam was more fun for me anyway.

Everyone's talking about Brutal Doom lately so I went and watched some gameplay footage. Wow. Good Lord.

articiansaid:

Brutal Doom ruined me for any modern Doom games. The original Doom is just that good, and the Brutal mod is all the modern update you need.

articiansays...

I put thousands of hours into Doom when it first came out. I went back and played it over the years, but probably not seriously after the turn of the millennium.
When I saw the video of Brutal Doom earlier this year I set aside a weekend for a little "Doom revival" for myself, and played through the entirety of Doom and Doom 2 with the Brutal mod.
I say with all sincerity that the thrills I got from that experience were like playing Doom again for the first time.
