What's up with the tendency of highly skilled guitarists gravitating towards disgustingly ugly guitars? You almost never see anybody with real chops playing on something good-looking like a Rickenbacker or something classy.

Oh, she does have a guitar doesn't she?

My apologies for taking the comments seriously but, for most guitarists, it's not how the guitar looks, it's how it sounds and how it plays. I actually had a chance to play with a Parker Nitefly guitar and the tonal options on it were awesome. Now, you want to talk about a highly skilled guitarist playing an ugly instrument, I present to you: Allan Holdsworth and the SynthAxe.

Would we be watching this video if she was a dude? Yes, because she rocks, but: Would it have been posted here in the first place? I doubt it: The youtube is full of guys jamming, we'd be watching such videos every week here, but we don't, so: Boobies make the world go round. And distort it.

the reason is simple: you need the right tool for the job. A big bulky Rickenbaker is not as playable as all those sleek and highly functional guitars you call ugly. Playing the things she does on a guitar that's not suited for that is just not very pleasant.

JAPRsays...

Bah. You can find plenty of guitars that have great action, a bajillion frets, and a similar level of comfort for playing that don't look like absolute shit. At least, imho. To each his/her own, lol.

"its not enough to know the notes, you need to know why the notes need to be played".

Was in regards to jazz, but still seems apt here.

Good enough technique though, hopefully she'll go on to put it to use.

For pure ergonomics reasons I would never play anything other than asymmetric v-shape guitars (think Randy Rhoads). Sit down, put it in your lap so that your thigh is between the spikes, and it just sits there nice and steady in the classical position. Good access to the whole fretboard, no need to hunch over the guitar at all, right shoulder is more relaxed. I can play for ages without a sore back or a stiff shoulder, and can just let go of it anytime needed, provided I don't lean too far forward.

That said they sure as heck aren't the prettiest guitars to look at, but them's the breaks.

Meh.

I'm sure you can do better then?

Oh yeah, because one is not allowed to comment on anything negatively if they're not better in it than the target, what a retarded standpoint. Not calling you retarded, it just is one of the most stupid ways to try and challenge an opinion. She played technically well, but that's all she did. It sounded boring and bland with no soul in it. I can get that from a proper midi-studio, but she needs to put herself in it more to make it sound...good. My definition of "rock out" needs more than just good technical ability to repeat sheet music, and yet, as music is, it's a question of taste, hence my rant is moot.

Sorry, I guess I just get tired of seeing comments on the internet by people who in turn don't have an ounce of talent to speak of themselves putting down talented people. Not that you don't have any talent cuz I don't know if you do or don't, which is why I asked. Being a musician myself, I thought it had plenty of soul worthy of more than "meh" as a comment. But like you said, it's a matter of taste. Somehow I seriously doubt anyone could get what she did there out of a proper midi studio.>> ^sillma:
