CSI:NY creates VB GUI to track IP's

"I'll create a GUI interface in Visual Basic, see if I can track an IP address"

Get me some lettuce, and I'll count to potato, then we'll find grandma.

Ha! How long would it take for the writers to find out what would be required to actually trace an IP addy? I'm sure CBS has an IT department: give those guys a call and pick their brains a little. Is that not doable?

That's so hilarious. Why do they add so many details that just sound stupid? She could have just said "I'll see if I can trace the IP" or whatever. I guess they thought they'd sound all tech savvy.

Reminds me of that clip from the show Life where someone hid his secret Excel spreadsheets in a videogame, but you could only access them by playing really well. Anyone know which vid I'm talking about? I searched like crazy but can't find it.

Honestly though... this was 'scripted' for people like me... that sounded pretty fancy to me... I mean i have no idea what she is talking about...

Noone has. GUI is an acronym for Graphical User Interface, IE the buttons, windows and stuff you see in Windows is the GUI of Windows.

Visual Basic is a simplified programming language, and it can actually be used to create GUI's but it makes no sense to do so to track an IP. Its a bit like changing the windscreen to get your car started.

Incidentally the last version of Visual Basic was released in 98...

Yes and no. Today, Visual Basic is distributed in the Visual Studio packages.

Oh, and I upvoted this for the "tits" word balloon that shows up at 10 seconds.

they want to sound technical so they use the word "basic"?????

by the way, i love putting the G in GUI, it's my job, i always wanted to do one of those hollywood codebreaking GUI's with the spinning wireframe globes and the warping hexagons and the numbers going clackety clack like a fruit machine, inexplicably rendered in an oldskool LCD style typeface.

They could have just downloaded Visual Route. - it even gives you a graph of all the hops!

Because in order to trace an IP you have to have an IP to trace.

But you can use Pomcry application to scan a network, or subnetwork to find active hosts.

or you can use Wire Shark and etterCap to make yourself you computer the router.. and see all traffic coming through that router (This is called Man in the Middle).

EDIT: upon watching again... it gets even more stupid. All they had to do is look at the blog's posting logs.. and find the computes IP address. Then trace it, and after that they have to figure out if the person is behind Seven Proxies or using a public computer. Because then it could be impossible to track them down.
