Seriously. I don't get WTF is with all the comedy over this clip. Watching it, I just felt terrible for her. She genuinely seemed to be suffering a serious health problem live on the air. That's not at all humorous FFS.

To be honest, I had no idea what I was witnessing and was completely oblivious that this was a potential stroke.

I had assumed it was simply a case of nerves or stage fright or something along those lines.

The video is *dead already. Serene Branson, though, is apparently fine. According to this report, she did not suffer a stroke, and was never taken to a hospital. She was examined by paramedics at the scene.

If I had to guess, I'd say she had a TIA - transient ischemic attack. It's like a stroke, but does not cause any permanent damage.

Serene Branson - did she suffer a stroke?

"Well, a very heavy burtation tonight," she said, smiling broadly. But her smile More.. disappeared as her speech devolved into a series of incomprehensible utterances.

To be clear, it's not immediately known what happened to Branson and calls to the station where she works went unanswered at presstime. But a neurologist who watched Branson's episode offered several possible explanations as to what happened to her.

"Stroke is the number one possibility," Dr. John Krakauer, associate professor of neurology and neuroscience at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, told CBS News. Other possibilities, he said, include a transient ischemic attack - a sort of "mini-stroke" that produces no lasting problems - a migraine headache, or a seizure.

Wow do I feel like a wretched human being after breaking my ass laughing at this. Figured it was just someone stumbling over words, panicking and then making word soup, as I frequently do myself in stressful moments, when my mind gets more than two steps ahead of my mouth, glad I dont have to do live tv.

Also there seems to be no basis as yet for saying this was something medical, at least her station are saying shes fine and there was no cause for concern. Shes not the first person to do something like this on live tv.

Ha ha... Stupid bitch tried to take Bruce Nolans job! Same shit happened to Evan Baxter. He was fine afterwards.
Morgan Freeman wouldnt let anything really bad happen to this girl.

Glad shes OK though.

From CBS Los Angeles Web site:

Update on Serene:

As many of you know CBS2 reporter Serene Branson experienced some health-related problems last night during our post-Grammys newscast.

She was examined by paramedics on scene immediately after her broadcast. Her vital signs were normal. She was not hospitalized.

As a precautionary measure, a colleague gave her a ride home. And while Serene says she is feeling better today, she wants us to know she followed-up with a visit to the doctor for some medical tests.

Serene thanks everyone for their concern and good wishes and hopes to be back on the air very soon.

Why's everyone being so anal about the use of a comedy tag? I'm sure people aren't trying to mock a serious medical condition. At first watching this I found it funny, but that's not because I thought she was experiencing a stroke, it's because I thought she just got nervous which is pretty damn hilarious.

Hear hear. I'm proud to say I did not recant like a child scared to death of being caught smoking behind the shed.

In fact, yep...it's still funny.

I had this happen to me about 15 years ago. I wasn't trying to talk, but I was trying to text chat with friends online. My brain just couldn't figure out why my hands weren't recording the language in my head. For at least 10 minutes my typing was even worse than Westy's -- largely incomprehensible.

kymbossays...

Amazing how differently you come at this when you hear she had a possible stroke before you watch the video. Actually, after hearing that news I couldn't even bring myself to watch the video. My mum had a stroke and her speech was affected, her typing - and she didn't know she'd had it. It was pretty terrifying.

Downer that it is for those of you wanting the comedy tag, I think that's why it's not comedy for some of us.

blankfistsays...

Local news said they don't think she suffered a stroke. They said a stroke doesn't typically make words incomprehensible. Likely this was anxiety.

So feel free to laugh without remorse.

This brought back some bad memories. I watched my mom go thru something similar just before having a seizure due to a brain tumor that we were unaware of. It is certainly not comedy.>> ^kymbos:

So yeah...I had this happen to me once.

It turned out to be a precursor to a devastating migraine that lasted a couple of days. Began with me feeling perfectly normal and clear headed but when I attempted to speak the words came out as garbled nonsense. It was like the words were being lost between my head and my mouth. Knew exactly what I was trying to say but my mouth just made no sense.

Within a half hour I sat and had a complete disconnect with time. I thought I gazed down at the floor for a moment but then someone roused me and said I'd been staring for almost 2 hours. When I tried to walk I'd copmletely lost control of one entire side of my body and had to be supported. Within another half hour the blinding pain started. I was taken to the doctor where I passed out for a couple hours. During the time I was unconscious I spoke continuously at a very fast rate. The doctor thought it was all nonsense but my mother recognized it was detailed engineering information about lasers as if I was speed reading it from technical data.

That Migraine was 2 days of agony. Migraines are a bitch.

Every time I hear someone claim they need to sit down because they "have such a migraine", I want to punch them in the face.

Porksandwichsays...

Sounded like a stroke or like she was having trouble controlling her tongue due to swelling or what not.

Was watching for the side of her mouth to go slack or her to start gasping for air.

I think you might have skipped over other people's comments before posting that. The official statement from the station is that there was a medical cause which was not a stroke. Others have speculated about the possible cause, there are a few and I think they've covered just about everything. The only things publicly known is that it wasn't anxiety or a stroke.

I've completely got sympathy for people who didn't understand what was going on and thought it was just nerves. I thought so too a few seconds into the video. But since that wasn't the case, it's a bit like laughing at Michael J. Fox. Something best left for Rush Limbaugh.

deathcowsays...

McBoinkens, I have visual migraines every few weeks... thankfully, I only get the visuals and none of the pain.

This video is actually pretty terrifying. I tend to think her brain just got out of sync with her mouth and her communications capability, versus any kind of actual bad event. Pressure, stress, performance anxiety etc.

Whats weird is if you type it in, and then re-arrange every 2nd for 3rd letter, it repeats a message about a ferret crawling up her leg.

rychansays...

Speculation from medical experts: What she experienced was probably a serious neurological episode, and she should have gone to a hospital:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1357247/Serene-Branson-DID-suffer-stroke-Verdict-Grammys-journalists-garbled-report.html

edit: And now, closure, her ACTUAL doctors say it was a migraine not a stroke
http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/02/17/doctor-grammy-reporter-suffered-migraine-is-back-to-normal/?hpt=C2
But they emphasize that the symptoms are indistinguishable from a stroke, so you better get yourself to a hospital if this happens.

lucky760says...

Right now she is on Early Show doing her first interview since the incident. Her neurologist diagnosed her as having suffered a "migraine aura," which causes stroke-like symptoms.

According to Serene, immediately after that on-air spot, she dropped her microphone, her right hand and the right side of her face went numb, and she collapsed crying in fear because she knew something was wrong with her. She couldn't speak normally for a half hour and she woke up the next day feeling hungover.

Glad to know it wasn't an actual stroke. Frightening stuff.
