CA Lawmaker Duvall Caught on Mic Bragging about Graphic Sex

Source and summary attributable to TPM.

September 8, 2009 - We've all seen those stories where a careless politician gets a little too candid when speaking into a hot mic. But this one's really in a whole different league.

Michael Duvall is a conservative Republican state representative from Orange County, California. While waiting for the start of a legislative hearing in July, the 54-year-old married father of two and family values champion began describing, for the benefit of a colleague seated next to him, his ongoing affairs with two different women. In very graphic detail.

For instance:

She wears little eye-patch underwear. So, the other day she came here with her underwear, Thursday. And
so, we had made love Wednesday--a lot! And so she'll, she's all, 'I am going
up and down the stairs, and you're dripping out of me!' So messy!

According to both KCAL and the OC Weekly, an alternative weekly in Orange County, the woman who wears the "eye-patch underwear" is Heidi DeJong Barsuglia, a lobbyist for an energy company, Sempra Energy. Duvall is vice chair of the Committee on Utilities & Commerce.

Ah, the always-hilarious hypocrisy of members of the family values sect. Dvuall might not know what the term means - he definitely has an interesting take on working hard to be a good "daddy".

I am deeply saddened that my inappropriate comments have become a major distraction for my colleagues in the Assembly, who are working hard on the very serious problems facing our state. I have come to the conclusion that it would not be fair to my family, my constituents or to my friends on both sides of the aisle to remain in office. Therefore, I have decided to resign my office, effective immediately, so that the Assembly can get back to work.

That was quick!

Personally, I wanna know more about the meeting at the lobbying firm when they were putting together their plans for getting the congressman's support.

I mean, do they just out and out ask their employees to spread their legs for money, or do they use euphemisms, or was Mr. Duvall just too sexy for them to resist?

I think it's unfair to measure an entire group on the example of the worst of its members. I think that's fair to say on both sides of the aisle. This does paint hypocrisy on the "family values" party. As a "family values" voter myself, I suggest you just turn this dude over to us, and we'll take care of the rest. I daresay you won't see him in elected office ever again.

I used to work closely with a state legislature. Attended committee meetings all the time. The mics are almost always hot. They record the course of the committee meeting for posterity and possible FOIA requests, and channel the mics through the overhead speakers during the meeting so that audience members (if any) can hear.

I lost count of how often a pol would start flapping his lips only to have a trusty aide spank him upside the head while pointing to the mic. I think we should be merciful and just make that grounds for automatic recall.

SURELY you won't find any of these shenanigans on the other side of the aisle.

What you won't find the other side of the aisle doing is preaching how 'family values' is the be all to end all of morality and the then hold themselves up as paragons of that virtue.

Its like hypocrisy is valuable commodity and they're trying to get all of it they can. Preaching abstinence only while your teenage daughter gets knocked up, espousing the evils of gays while sexting underaged congressional pages from an airport bathroom where you're getting a BJ through a glory hole, 'hiking the Appalachian trail', screaming that illegal immigrants are ruining the country when you've got 5 tending your garden, bemoaning government spending and intrusion while you're giving the okay for huge defense spending and tapping of citizen's phones. The Republicans' behavior is the very antithesis to their own ideology.

No the dems or libs aren't great, but for the sheer absurdity of their positions vs actions the republicans take the cake.

Oh please, not this moronic drivel again. Someone's teenager does something and they're not allowed to speak out against it? That's disingenuous, and you know it.

I'm not saying she can't speak out against teen pregnancy, I'm saying its hypocritical (or at the very least ignorant) of her to support abstinence only education when the evidence for its ineffectiveness was her own daughter. If Bristol's pregnancy were an isolated incident among people and communities that support abstinence only education I would agree that it's 'moronic' to suggest Palin is being hypocritical for preaching abstinence only. However, its not an isolated incident, and there is evidence the teen pregnancy rate is higher in areas where abstinence is stressed over other forms of Contraception and STD control.

Further more, the very fact teens don't always do what their parents say supports sexual education that isn't limited to abstinence. If they know how to properly us a condom, or that douching with coke or pulling out aren't effective contraception, maybe when they fail to abstain they can still practice safe safe.

BTW California is bankrupt. Thanks, taxocrats!

There have been a lot more sex scandals per capita involving socially-conservative politicians than liberal democrats. Those who weren't repressed by religion learned how to satisfy themselves in less dangerous ways. Hypocrisy sucks.

"I want to make it clear that my decision to resign is in no way an admission that I had an affair or affairs," Duvall said in a statement in his website. "My offense was engaging in inappropriate story-telling and I regret my language and choice of words.

I think this is now known as the "I have a wide stance defense".

It's kinda like flying a jet to an environmental summit. =)

How can you tell the difference between someone who believes in "family values" and someone who just claims to in order to get your vote? You can't. It worked for him, and it will work for the next guy too.

^I think Studds was hypocritical in the sense that he claimed to be a balanced and responsible person. What he did was clearly a violation of his and his community's moral code.

But that's an order of magnitude less hypocrisy than politicians who actively deny others the right to marry while abusing marriage themselves.
