VideoSift 2.5! More Hosts, More Privileges, More Love

It's been a while since we've had an incremental update. The last one introduced Collectives. This one is not a huge update, but it is the lull before the big one. As some of you know - Lucky is polishing off changes on VideoSift 3.0. More about that later. Lets start with our new hosts.

Fora TV is a great resource for political content. They have deals with C-Span and other foundations to exclusively distribute their stuff.

LiveLeak is gaining a reputation as the place that hosts video footage that "they" don't want you to see. I don't need to tell you who "they" are. This is also the #1 most requested host bar none. Just a reminder, that some of LiveLeak's content would violate our no snuff rule, as they show pretty graphic death scenes.

DailyMotion is a site that inspires "what, it's not on the Sift already?" It's a big site, that somehow has fallen through the cracks. No more. I feel they have a more European flavour.

#1 requested site by Fedquip. ;-) They do have a good library of very siftable stuff - sure the player is not handsome - but it's a diamond in the rough.

New Privileges

We've added the *blog and *dead/*undead privileges for Silver star members. (yay) It gets a little tricky when we start to spread invocations among other star levels, so here's a document, Member Privileges to keep it all in order. (also in Useful Pages panel to your right ->)

Now, here's a doozy.

Rank has its privileges as we all know, and by the time you are diamond level, we feel that you have earned the community's trust. We are now allowing Diamond members to submit video from any host - not just those on our accepted host list - with a few restrictions:

  • - Must be Flash Video
  • - Must not autoload or autoplay
  • - Must not spawn pop-ups or do other annoying adevertising stuff.
  • - Must not be much bigger than our standard embed size

    A word about VideoSift 3.0

As I mentioned above, Lucky has been toiling away in his code dungeon putting the polish on a completely new version of VideoSift. The changes in VideoSift 3.0 will be as radical as the changes from 1.0 to 2.0. The improvements are around 3 major areas:

  • - Streamlining the interface and code to withstand the onslaught of our increasing traffic. (VideoSift 2.x is popping bolts left and right)
  • - Some radical improvements to Collectives to make them more cohesive as subcommunities
  • - Fixing all the little crappy things that bug us about VS 2.0

Enjoy 2.5 and hang on for the New New VideoSift 3.0

    Edit by Lucky:

As a late addition to version 2.5, you will see a new listing at the bottom of a video's page above the Related Videos section labeled "More Videos by [username]" that lists random videos also submitted by the same user. Queued videos have a higher priority in the random selection; this will help us all fend against queue rot and get more eyes on our other submissions.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

A bit of trivia, the little superscripted 2.x number in the header above the blue VideoSift text, always links back to the post announcing the new verision.

Also, we've made a few code changes, so if there any bugglies - please let us know here.

    pyrex says...

This minor upgrade is cool and all, but I just tried to discard this sift and sifty told me to speak to the hand.. claw, handle, whatever. Had Farhad discard it for me, but I've discarded several of my own videos, never had this happen before.

    lucky760 says...

Thanks for the heads-up about that bug, pyrex; it should be fixed now. Since you're a silver star, if you notice any problems with Siftbot invocations (especially the new ones: dead/undead/blog) please let me know.

    karaidl says...

Oh, and I also had a suggestion for a new invocation. What about a *resubmit invocation for our videos that have expired in the queue? Kind of like *save, only you can do it to your own videos, and it'll wipe the slate clean as for as votes. Just a thought. I suppose you could just resubmit the old fashioned way, but I get annoyed that the title has to be changed, and an invocation would just be faster and less hassling.

    sometimes says...

what, no plans for awards/medals on videos?
youtube has what it calls "honors" for videos, stuff like "#3 top rated (month) - all"

Maybe have gold/silver/copper icons on the videos and then an awards section on the user profile page.
While most of them don't translate over, things like

    "top 1/5/15" - up arrow or top-hat
"front page in 6/12/24 hours" - newspaper icon
"top 15 in 1/2/3 days" - #15 with speed lines
"in 20/10/5 playlists" - paper list icon
"promoted 3/2/1 times" - thumbs up

c'mon, give us more shiny trinkets!

Besides, this reqards quality over quantity.

Lucky, the videos at the bottom submitted by the same user sometimes displays the current video being watched. The current video should probably be eliminated as a possibility for "See more videos".

Also, I'm very much opposed to allowing Ebaumsworld as a video host.

    looris says...

    (1) a *SMALL* bug: sometimes the videos from this user and the related videos can show both the same video

    (2) i agree with DJ too, "from this user" could be under related

    (3) i don't know if i like the karaidl idea: this would make easier to repost (obviously), while reposting shouldn't be done too often

    karaidl says...

Well then what if we can set limitations on reposting? You know, only a certain rank grants you the invocation? Or maybe there's only a certain number of times you can repost it? I think people are going to repost anyway, but that's just me. I've sent many videos into the discard pile when I came across something better, but then my queue list frees up, and I want to put them back on, preferably with the same title.

    looris says...

    same title IS an issue.

    but for the rest, no.

it is good people can re-post. it is good it's not trivial to do it, so they think twice about doing it.

that's my opinion, don't know about other people, but anyway implementing a feature takes time, and this is a real trivial feature that maybe is not so trivial to implement.

    karaidl says...

You make a valid point, so I'm willing to compromise. As long as it would be possible for a queued/published video to have the same title as a discarded post, I would be happy.

Also, in 3.0, could it be possible to add a video to a collective after it's been posted? I understand that it would get complicated for people to be able to change a video's collective, so I'm not advocating that.

    raven says...

Isn't it already possible for a new vid to have the same title as a discarded on? Haven't noticed this is a problem anyway...

About your idea karaidl... I would be opposed to being able to self-resubmit or self-save a vid. In my mind, saves should be given out by others because then that means that at least one other person feels the vid should be published... being able to retain any votes it earned on its first round through the queue is kind of a gift that goes with it, and by adding this gift to any kind of resubmission command would kind of negate the power of the save.

About your second idea... I like it, there are a lot of videos I published before the existence of collectives that I feel should be filed properly.... however, I think that once a collective has been designated for a post it should not be possible to switch it to another collective... that would make things potentially very messy around here.

    lisacat says...

I just tried to submit a video from a host not officially supported, testing my new diamond powers, and it was rejected. Here is the embed code...:

    Am I missing something?

edited to add: Yes, I am missing something, like a knack for paying attention to the rules. I was gently reminded that one must have 250 published posts to earn the shiny bauble privileges. Sigh, that's a long way off. Some diamond member may find it interesting enough to post. It's about the Nat'l Musuem & HP printing masterpieces and posting them on the street...cool!
