Social Voting

I just had a revolutionary idea!

What if we got rid of the voting system on Videosift, and replaced it with an average sharecount from the social networks to measure popularity?
Or an average of Likes, +1s, Tweets and whatnots?

Pros:
- Content on VS would spread more outside
- More non VS users would get to see clips

Cons:
- People not active in social networks could not participate
-Multiple shares by a single user would be possible (-> more than one vote: BAD!)
(but maybe your vote total on a clip could never be more than 1. So if you share it once it counts as one vote, and if you share it to two networks, your net votecount would stay at one by dividing your vote by two)

Obviously I havenĀ“t thought this all the way through.
I am counting on you guys to tell me why this idea is probably silly.
Also it would probably be a shitload of work programmingwise.

Should be an interesting discussion.

I've considered something like this in the past because integrating the most popular social platforms would help proliferate our very existence. But...

Whatever the common thread is among Sifters, most all of them just seem allergic to or phobic of social networking. There are very few, who are really comfortable with and often use them, myself included.

So, the biggest drawback is most all of our top 100 members would probably just stop voting altogether.

This would be a step too far in my opinion. There are already "like" and "plus 1" buttons next to each video, so if people really want to share them on their social network they can. But that's where the problem lies - I'd happily upvote a video, but it might not be a video I think my social circle need to see. The video might be of specific interest to me, but not many of my friends. Do I want to spam their walls/streams with all my upvoted videos? No. Would spamming their walls/streams with videos make VideoSift come across positively or would it be viewed as just another spamming app which people block or frown up negatively.

They need to remain separate for good reason. Share what you want your FB/Google+/Twitter peeps to see specifically.

I largely don't use social networking with the exception of Twitter and I guess it's because I'm not happy with putting myself out there. Definitely it's an age-related thing as it's very clear that teens and people in their 20s engage with these things wholeheartedly (and perhaps storing up problems for the future).

So I don't see how you do it or would want to do it unless the day comes when integrating VS as some Facebook app becomes appealing for some reason. And then kiss all autonomy goodbye.

I don't care for the trend of social network integration. Even the times I do want to share a video on Facebook, I copy and paste the URL myself. I'm not paranoid about being tracked but that doesn't mean I want to be a breadcrumb trail artificer either.

No!
I keep my VideoSift opinions separate from my Facebook/Social network connections.
I feel okay about sharing my opinions here on the sift because it's outside (mostly) of my actual world. I don't share all my opinions with everyone I know and I'd like to keep it that way.

Also, I don't want to spam everyone I know each time I post a comment, a video or upvote a Sift.

And to ad to this, the last thing I'd hate to see is the Sift becoming another slave to the Facebook conglomerate that it has become. Everything connected with FB is governed by their rules and controlled by their methods. The sift would only become a "Feature" on FB and would loose it's own identity altogether - not to mention it's core members.
