Least helpful/ Most hated comments.

Commenting, both here in Sift Talk and on other posters' videos, is really the heart and soul of the community here on Videosift. There are, however, some comments that are so inane, banal and/or useless that I can't help but hating the sifter making them. I suggest that we put all on notice who make the following useless comments will receive a comment downvote with no option for appeal. My suggestions for such treatment, among others are:

1) "You beat me by (x) minutes/hours submitting this".
2) "This video is good, but I like (x) video better".
3) "I'm sure I've seen this posted somewhere else"

In my opinion the last comment listed above, made without making any attempt to identify where one has seen it, is the single most useless and lazy of all possible comments, and I submit that sifters who make it be banninated, have their face rubbed in the snow, and they be beaten about the head and neck.

This list is by no means complete or comprehensive. Please list your (least) favorite comments below!

Damn. I was just gonna post something like this, but you beat me to it by a few minutes.

I often do number three, but it's usually "I'm sure I've seen this before, but I can't find it right now. It's not my responsibility to take my time and search for a dupe. It's the submitter's job. If I have the time, I will, but that comment serves the purpose of letting them know they should look a little bit harder.

As far as number two, that one goes to say "Hey, if you liked this one, go check out this other one!"
Why not? Isn't that what VS is for?

Disclaimer: The first line is obviously satirical in nature.

oxdottir says...

NOne of those comment types bother me, and at least one strikes me as positive. To me, at least "you beat me by x minutes" sounds like, "way to go, fellow sifter, that was a great thing you put up there--as evinced by my strong desire to also put it up." What's wrong with that? And for comment two, this site is about video quality. If you didn't want opinions about the quality of the video, best not to post here. And, personally, I do three a lot when I'm sure I've seen the video here before, as MG said.

So, no fellow-feeling here. I haven't done much comment voting, though.

Arsenault185 says...

Ouch, blankman, ouch.

But personally i just hate the word "viddy" video has the same amount of letters so its just as easy to type, so any comment containing the word "viddy" is pretty much irritating to me.

karaidl says...

My least favorite comment is "I enjoy raping children while reading Mein Kampf." Not that anyone has ever said that, but if they did, it would be really horrible.

choggie says...

ooooooh, I wanna play-
I hate shit like this:I've got no problem with any of those comments. I've also got no problem with you downvoting any comment you please. cheers"

Why? Because it's just as good as saying something liiiike,
"Well who cares what you think, I disagree, and in using a short, authoritative-tone in my statement without further explanation, I seek to devalue your observations or opinions even more. The, "have a nice day" "cheers" shit after this, is just passive-aggressive icing on the cake!!!!"
(you asked for it dystopianfjofuiry)

oh and viddy? viddies? vidddis, VIDOE!!!?? Fuck ya mister linear!!!! Mister exact rendering!!!! Slip a pillow case on the dictionary and get some sleep!!!

therealblankman says...

arsenault: fair enough

dotdude: you're missing the point, and a good opportunity to vent

choggie: bless your confused/confusing soul

marinegunrock: at least you're honest about your lack of imagination

karaidl: thank you for understanding

grimm: buddy christ will punish you

sirex says...

tbh i dont mind any of those comments. and num (3) is often due to the insane titles people give their videos making it nigh on impossible to find dupes sometimes. - i do wish people would stop fishing for votes with clever titles that dont relate to the content. - even the tags are abused like this now.

choggie says...

S'ppose I hate all the chat-room speak short cuts to conversation, other wise known as the butt-raping of the English language. If you have indeed, "Pissed Yourself Laughing" please, civilized folks try to hide that sort of thing.

smibbo says...

most hated comment: I didn't get it (AKA what did I just watch?)

If you didn't get it, watch it again or read the commentary or google it or something!! GAWDS you people want everything spoon-fed to you!!

I hate seeing my name in the top 5 comments but it's not because my comment is in there, rather, a comment bashing me is in the top 5. Not that I hate being bashed, I just get jealous when my name catches my eye only to find out it's not in praise.
but...any publicity is good publicity.

choggie says...

So go and read my first comment on this thread, and ask yourself:

What is passive-aggression?
Am I passive-aggressive?
Do I become frustrated when I do not understand something and react by poo-pooing the subject, leaving this as my only retort?
Do I always have to have the last word?

I am only returning to this thread and repeating myself, because so many people up-voted the comment made by dytopsinfurtyeday, which in my humble estimation, is a textbook example, of passive-aggression. Since this seems to be a popular comment on this thread, I can only assume that,
A: You people up-voted the comment because you agree whole-heartedly with it:
B: You folks simply clicked your mouse lazily over the "up" arrow, for lack of anything worthwhile to do, or
C: The world is swollen to capacity with sufferers of the condition mentioned here.

The answer being C in my, less than humble estimation, so any argument of that fact is simply more of the same...

I agree with therealblankman, that these fly-by comments bugger up a comment thread worse than siftbot's requeue notifications, or JAPR's, "ROFL's" on every other .....V I D D Y !

JAPR says...

I'm just going to ignore choggie's comments, since he's probably just crack-bitchin'.

Anyway, I'm with MG/RS/DFT on this. I usually try to find the dupe when possible, which can sometimes take a good little bit of time out of my day, but sometimes I neither have the time nor the energy to wade through my upvoted vids/sifted videos in a channel to try and find the dupe, so I'll just comment that I know it's already on here.

dotdude says...

I'm objecting to the fussing about how and what comments people leave. Do we have to go on about every little hangnail. Yeesh!

How many "pile ons" do we need around anyway. Shouldn't folks be SIFTING. Interesting with all the hand-wringing that goes on here about the queue being TOO BIG. Go do more sifting, people!

joedirt says...

This SiftTalk has been posted before. Seriously, and that time I think I said that a comment like, "I think this is a dupe" is a flag for anyone else who might remember it. The problem is searching is very hard due to bad tags / titles.

According to google:
"this is a dupe" appears 14,000 times.
"beat me by" appears 2,150 times.
"my title" only comes in at 163 appearances.
(half of the my title posts are by joedirt)

Note to admins:
This is more proof that your top-down decisions to make micro-managing behavior acceptable will lead to an unpleasant place full of tattle tales and calling out other people's comments and behavior. And then comment moderation wars, then voting wars, then calling banning those who vote in a certain way. Enjoy your bed.

rottenseed says...

Sorry Choggie, I have to disagree with your analysis of people that voted DFT's comment. Maybe "cheers" was slightly passive-aggressive, but it did not detract from the original point. This brings up something that does piss me off about the tone of people in general, if not just on this site. Those that speak from a pulpit rather than as equals. Let's face it, you're on this site because you have nothing better to do with your life at that time, just like the rest of us, so cut the shit. We're all just as meaningless as the next schmuck.

Ummmmm, whatever dude. We're having a fine, pleasant conversation here. We can do that. It's not like people are all bitching their asses off and flaming each other.

MINK says...

comment voting is only good for flagging karaidl's comments.

every other effect is negative.

and karaidl was funny and findable long before comment voting was introduced anyway.

JAPR, ah fuck i can't be bothered typing. i'll just downvote.
*flame @ JAPR etc. you are a poopy pants.

choggie says...

really man, I can't stand the comment voting either, because if I really like or despise what someone had to say, I pm them, perhaps start another conversation, oh, and few folks I chit-chat with regularly, kinna just like in the real world.....

The only reason I upvote a comment, is because i am a robot like the rest of ya....gonna start ignoring those little arrows, they really do serve no purpose, save a little ego-stroking, or passive-aggressive poking.

Thanks for the clear-light there MINK....I knew I had a reason for the disgust I feel every time I up or down vote a comment.....

Pulpit-speaking equals, eh rottenseed? Interesting concept. Preacher is also a member of the church, eh?....some folks were imprinted to be obnoxious...we can't help it.

rottenseed says...

one that speaks lowly of "robots" probably shouldn't be comparing themselves to the one that leads mentioned beings. Unless you are claiming that we're all mindless drones seeking a leader and you are the demagogue who will lead us to our enlightenment through your worthwhile rhetoric.

It's not having something to say that's obnoxious, it's that whenever one believes that what they have to say is infallible and is the true word passed down from god itself instead of just a point of view that is on the same spectrum of validity that everybody else derives their opinions from. Of course...that's just my opinion.

sorry for the lack of punctuation.

Oatmeal says...

I'm sure something like this has been posted before....

But seriously, the comments that really piss me off are siftbots notices. I'll look at a video and see it has 8 comments, figure it must be at least interesting, only to find out that its been requeued four times and there are no real comments. Invocations like requeue and anything siftbot says should be posted on the comments page, but not add to the comment count for the video

spoco2 says...

Man, it really is becoming quite apparent that choggie is a very unhappy camper.

Why so much venom? Why so much anger? This is a site to WASTE TIME and RELAX... it's not the second coming of christ here!

MycroftHomlz says...

I have seen at least 5 dupes the last 4 days make it very high in the queue.

In all honesty, I think some of it is because the sifter doesn't know better. Letting them know they should check better next time is important. I am not innocent, but I am getting better. Part of the sift is to prevent that from happening.

And as long as we are on the subject.

http://www.videosift.com/video/Im-gonna-live-until-I-die

is a dupe of

http://www.videosift.com/video/Incredible-luck-defying-death-montage

And it shouldn't have taken '6 days 15 hours 9 minutes' to find it. We need to enforce better tagging.

Not to mention the fact that at least half of the votes on it are from people who had voted for the original. Most of you don't smoke enough weed to have that bad of memories.

Come on people.

Change "beat me by" to "Beat me" for a more realistic count. 7,160 times.

"it's that whenever one believes that what they have to say is infallible and is the true word passed down from god itself"
-rottenseed, that's YOUR perceptive apparatus-whatever anyone muses may be either true, false, or meaningless-I never make an observation without having tested it on myself-

Spoco2??, again, YOUR take on what may be, wholly subjective.

dystopiftrhsy? No. It wouldn't, or perhaps it would...or perhaps it would not matter at all.

When I look in the mirror, I see everyone-we're all reflections of each other....The folks you love to hate? They are not unlike the folks you adore. Humans are dynamic, predictable, and prone to success, failure, stasis, etc.

The minute you think you know something for sure, that is the very moment you are dead wrong.
We are all in idiot meatbot mode on any given Sunday. How otherwise would one be able to know the dynamic when it manifests??

Farhad2000 says...

IMHO comment voting is over rated, occasionally everyone upvotes a very good comment on a video discussion that brings more sifter attention to it, but nowdays its all just all for the LULz. Look at the current Top 5, nearly all of them lead to this thread.

I actually think maybe we're trying to say the same thing but our lack of any introduction to an elementary school level grammar book has cast us in an apparent dipole to each other.
