Help - I don't know what this is about???

I just got a strange phone call (at work) from my daughter (at home) saying Someone from MTV (a music video station in the Us) had just phoned for me.

It was regarding a video I posted from one of their shows (???)
All my daughter could remember was it was something about a guy falling out of a boat(???)
I have no idea what they are talking about.

He left a phone number and I am supposed to call them back (long distance - Los Angeles, CA)
He said got my information from VideoSift - which wouldn't be too hard since my profile links back to my personal website.

I have no idea what this is about.
The only video that comes close to this is a video I posted almost a year-and-a-half ago.

The video is an embed from Liveleak.
It doesn't look anything like a video from a TV station.

I haven't called them back, I don't even have a name - and I don't plan to unless they pursue it further.

My Question is, What are the legal grounds here for them calling me and telling me to take down a video (if that is what they are doing).
Should they not be going to Liveleak? Do I have to remove the embed from Videosift. @dag

Has anyone else Had this done before? Seems strange that they would contact me.

You have done nothing illegal, so whatever they want just hear them out. If they get bitchy, direct them to liveleak.

If they want you to "take down" a video, try telling them how embedding works and direct them to liveleak.

If that doesn't work, direct them to a picture of goatse and hang up.

Well, your website also has your email so he could contact you that way, but that would leave a record of the scam, which is what I would wager it is. Why would a professional call you at home, talk to your daughter, leave a call back number without a contact name, and then expect you to call him, about some mysterious video? He might want you to pay a licensing fee or some BS like that. If he doesn't know what embedding is then he is probably not actually looking for copyright infringements. Instead he is looking for gullible people.

Gwiz's goatse plan is foolproof...

I've just done some researching and I've further traced the Phone number to "Lale "Lolly" Arpaci "

Lale is a reality TV producer.

I have replied to him (via email form) using the only contact information I can find.
(Long distance calls to the US is outside my phone plan so email will have to do)

Don't panic. Worst case scenario: they hold the copyright to the clip you posted. In that case they need to contact the video host to have them remove it. They can also contact VS to tell the admins to take it down. If dag and lucky feel that they're the legitimate copyright holders, they can remove it from the system. This isn't your site, nor is LiveLeak (or whatever site is hosting the video you posted), so the responsibility isn't yours. Viacom went after YouTube in its lawsuit, not after the hundreds of thousands of people who uploaded copyrighted material.

Besides, you live in Canada. Are they going to extradite you to Los Angeles just because you embedded a video that someone else uploaded? If you think about it like that, you realize the patent absurdity of it all. Also, Fusionaut and gwiz665 could be right: it might all be some sort of scam. Do NOT call them back.

Fuck. Them.

I bet they're looking for the copyright holder of a video. Ignore them.

If they want you to pull the video down, then you're still free and clear because you're not hosing the video. Tell them that's a question for the video hosting company, such as YouTube or Vimeo or Liveleak, etc.

Right before you hang up, tell them to eat assholes at Baby Gap. That will confuse them for the rest of the day.

As @Sarzy guessed, my first thought is that it's someone who wants permission to use the video clip and is searching for the copyright owner.

In the past we've had people from TV shows (so they claim) contact us looking for the owners of videos they find on The Sift, but of course we can never offer any assistance, given the no-self-linking edict of Sift.

If it was an issue of copyright violation, VideoSift would have been contacted.
