UPDATED! EURO S⇧FTUP 2009 now with confirmed location!

Sept 5. Update:

Confirmed Date: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 in LONDON
Confirmed Location: CANTALOUPE in the East End (off Old Street), starting from 8:00 pm

Location on Google Maps

We have five confirmed participants so far: BreaksTheEarth, gwiz665, ornthoron, haldaug and maatc

I have reserved a corner for eight people hoping some more local London sifters will show. The more the merrier!

Here is an accomodation suggestion for out of towners

Original post:
Judging from alien_concepts post about six months ago there seemed to be a few people interested in a Euro-Siftup around late August/early September.
(I counted: gwiz665, Thylan, schmawy, Ornthoron, laura, kronosposeidon, Deano, Farhad2000, evil_disco_man, deputydog, antonye and BreaksTheEarth)

Since things have cooled off over in the original thread (and it looks like a_c can not make it) I am taking over in trying to organise something.

Here is my suggestion:
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 in LONDON

Any date would work really, but this one gives everyone around six weeks to plan the trip, plus we save a lengthy discussion on what day would be best.

I will fly over from Berlin for the occasion, and I even if only three or four people can make it from the original list, it should be a blast!
(Maybe we can come up with some video project and shoot something while we are all together?)

It would also be great if some London locals could jump in and suggest a cool pub for the gargantuan siftapallooza.

So, who is in?
EDD says...

I won't be able to make it this year - because of financial reasons, obviously (unrelated to the global moneygeddon, though) - but Zeus knows I SOOO wanted to. I do promise I'll participate or even organize another Siftup in the years to come though, it just feels like home here!

Good luck to everyone who does participate eventually and here's a little *quality for your efforts, maatc, this is real frickin' nice of you!

gwiz665 says...

It's a weekend, so I should be able to do it, if my finances allows me.

This could be fun. If many of us out-of-towners come in at the same time, we could probably book some B&B together for saturday-sunday, and save some cash.

I'm still tentatively in.

punk225 says...

Sounds cool I'll come along, my schedule is pritty empty after dropping out of uni anyway . I've been to the odd pub or two in london and if people are a bit pushed for money i could try and sneek the more youthful of you into kings college's waterfront bar (very nice views of london as well).

A video project sounds cool as well

maatc says...

Cool, IT´S ON! it seems there are definitely enough people to make this happen!

I like the idea of the waterfront bar, but could there be a problem with getting the non students in should the group get too big?

Any other suggestions?

Oh and I´ll be crashing with a friend, so I won´t be joining the B&B gang.

maatc says...

Let´s *sticky this for a few days until we decide on a venue.
Maybe we can get some more people to come, too.

So far I count seven participants (including the "maybe" candidates)

maatc (booking flights today)
gwiz665
BreaksTheEarth
Deano
deputydog
punk225
Ornthoron

Ideas for a video project anyone?

maatc says...

>> ^Deano:
Sorry "non students"? If this grouping is based around anything to do with being a student then I'm in trouble

From what I read admission to the suggested Kings College Waterfront bar is in the company of a registered student only.
I think we should be fine as long as the group doesn´t get too big, but I´ll let punk225 be the judge of that...

From what it looks like now we should probably also think about an alternative, but I don´t know my way around the London nightlife, so we need some locals to jump in with suggestions.

Deano says...

^Cheers maatc. I'll have a think but the places I hang out are ok but perhaps not suitable for this sort of event. It's the overwhelming amount of choice that feels stifling. But somewhere central with a decent view seems to be the ticket.

maatc says...

>> ^gwiz665:
Alright, fags good sirs. What are we figuring out? Should we arrange some B&B together or something, or should we all just figure it out separately?

I am staying with a friend, so count me out of the B&B action.

We still need a decision on a venue.
Anyone who knows any of the places from deputydogs list that might be a good choice for us?

Crake says...

I might be coming too... there's a games conference in London around the 12th as well I think, which I'd like to check out as well - I forgot the name though, can anyone help?

Hm. Couldn´t find anything. There is a London Games festival, but that is not until end of october.

griefer_queafer says...

Tornoto siftup anyone? When is that shit gonna happen? These euros are stealing all the fire with their buzz and shit.

No but you guys are gonna have a great time. Video better be up real QUICK-like.

maatc says...

Ok folks, here is a suggestion for a venue:

CANTALOUPE off Old Street in the East End.

It has a nice loungey area that looks perfect to hang out in for a chat and some drinks/food.
Their bar menu sounds delicious and food starts at 3 pounds, with burgers around 6 pounds.
They also have a good range of beers, including the Czech Budvar.
My London local friend also tells me there are a few cool bars around the area in case we want to switch location later on.

Here is how to get there from Harry Palmers Lodge

What do you all think? Choices are plenty of course, but since no one came forward with another suggestion this sounds to me like a good spot.

We should decide by the weekend so I can reserve a cosy corner for 8 people or so. (5 confirmed at the moment)

punk225 says...

Sorry guys but it looks like I can't make it anymore . Covering a saturday shift at work is proving a difficult task...

You've got some journey from the airport haven't you gwiz? I know it says London Stansted but its very much in essex

maatc says...

Definitely try and get some Stansted Express Tickets on the plane for something like 20 or so pounds return.

It sounds like a lot, but they are 28,80 pounds if you buy them at the station...

Train takes 45 mins to Liverpool Street. There are buses too, but they take ages I think.

maatc says...

Alright, Cantaloupe it is. I updated the main post accordingly.

We have a cosy corner for eight people starting from 8pm.

Lets try and get some more other local London Sifters to come!

kronosposeidon says...

Sorry I can't make it, but so far you have an American, a Dane, two Norwegians, and a German all committed to meeting up...in London. I sure hope at least one Brit in the area shows up to take you all under his wing, protecting you from unsavory Englishmen. You know, like Christopher Hitchens, the Artful Dodger, or Grand Moff Tarkin.

antonye says...

Cantaloupe is a cool bar, Old St is an ok area with some funky little bars around there.

I /should/ be able to make this but no promises as weekends are always a bit hectic. I'll be travelling straight in on the train as it's only a 30min journey to Liverpool St station and then a 5 min walk to Old Street.

There's plenty of places to go around there for very late drinks, especially if you like the *femme kind of things...

antonye says...

> Definitely try and get some Stansted Express Tickets on the plane for something like 20 or so pounds return.

This.

Once you get to Liverpool St, just get a cab. As there's a few of you, it will probably be cheaper than individual tickets on the Underground and a lot easier than hauling luggage around. It won't cost you a fortune either.

NobleOne says...

WTF I lived in Germany for 5 1/2 years and no Sift up that i can remember then i leave and voila...a get together....(shakes fist at the sift)

ok so what is up with the virginia sift or i would be willing to go as far as the (Eastcoast Sift) New York perhaps?

Eden says...

Aww... I've been away from the sift sooooooooooooooooo long, I had no idea about this til now. Shame cos I probably would have jumped on a train from Bristol to randomly add some girly energy to the balance. Alas, I have plans in Cardiff tomorrow instead.

gwiz665 says...

Drunk a "few" party was had. We're gonna continue tomorrow, so you have another chance, BTE, if you're up for it.

I'm really drunk now and about to pass out.

Oh, and Deano did call me the scariest user on videosift, which made me feel real warm and fuzzy inside. I think he's changed his mind after meeting me though, but we'll see, eh?

Oh, and if you had secrets with me, you don't anymore. That's the way sift-ups work.

Deano says...

Lordy, I feel wrecked. This is TWO nights in a row I've been drinking which is alot for someone who is happy with a coffee.

I can attest that Gwiz665 is a Quality individual with some interesting stories

videosiftbannedme says...

I'm sad I wasn't there to share in the festivities, but am glad that good times were had by my fellow Sift brethren. I hope the hangovers are short, but the memories and experience ring long and true. (Toast, as I'm there in spirit)

Deano says...

Well I'm partially recovered from the weekend and about to visit my first school of the week (work). May I just say it was lovely meeting Haldaug, Ornthoron, Gwiz665 and maatc. I await the photos in total abject fear.
Rather amazed to find a place like Cantaloupe in Old Street, where the bars are usually souless overpriced drinking hives. I will be returning there.
