Downvote Abuse - Could this be a solution?

Hey all,

there is no immediate case for this, but I am sure downvote abuse will happen again.

The one thing that stuck out, and was used as the main evidence against all past offenders, was the rapid downvoting of multiple clips within seconds.

Maybe the solution could be to put a timelimit on successive downvotes. Lets say 30 minutes or so have to pass until the next one. That would take the fun out of drive by downvotes and significantly minimize abuse in my eyes.

I average about one downvote every two months, so even a longer waiting period like a day would be sufficient for my needs.
Also if I really wanted to make a statement against 2 clips in a row I know I would not mind returning to do it after a little waiting period.

What do you all think?

Ant will hate it. And you, for suggesting it. But I consider myself to to use the downvote more often than not on crap, rather than just letting everyone else "not vote" on it. But this wouldn't bother me a bit. A day sounds fine to me. Something like this will really help keep this a *quality place.

[EDIT] Hmmm. I thought I had one... Now who the hell did I give that last one to?. Oh well. I owe you one in about 8 hours.

I think it's basically a good idea, but I don't think the period should be as long as 30 minutes. I think once every 2 minutes should be good enough. If you make it longer than that then you'll really cramp ant's style. I know that sounds like a joke, but it's not. It would be easy for ant to see 2 videos in a row that he didn't like, and I don't think he should be punished because of the abuse of others. I know some people here would like that, but ant always votes honestly so he shouldn't have to changing his voting behavior.

Two minutes between downvotes should be good enough.

How about we stop trying to dream up new ways to control what people do with their votes, and just let everyone vote the way they want. Downvote everything that doesn't appeal to you like Ant?...fine. Never use the downvote because you think it makes you a better person?...fine. Downvote everything I have ever sifted because you don't like my holier then thou attitude in this post?....well that's where I draw the line. Just kidding. It's fine as well.

It wouldn´t control what you vote for at all!

And I don´t think the ability to vote for 10 clips a second is an argument in this case.

How about making the timelimit for all below diamond?
That way ant can still skip through the meadows of downvote as he pleases...

I don't think this is a good idea. If we just prevent this one method of abuse they'll just try to find some other way to get their bitter revenge and maybe in a way that no one will easily detect.

By allowing it to happen, we can discover the abuse easily without any doubt of their intentions and then react accordingly.

If someone thinks he is singled out... maybe an option to post the video as anonymous. If the poster's name is not shown on the post, you can't possibly retaliate against someone.

IMHO this is a MAJOR and COMPLEX feature but I don't want people to feel like they are being attacked. We all benefit watching the best videos without having to watch the lousy or shocking ones.

Obviously some people take down-votes as an emotional assault, but should I write an apology in the comments each time I down-vote a video?

It all resides in the ego-abuse is not the same as down-voting....if you think so, abuse the priv-and continue to recoil from the shit you think it best to.....

Krupo says...

A chill-out feature like, "whoa cow-boy, wait a minute" could significantly curtail abuse.

No need to be draconian and impose 30 minute time-outs. Just something simple would help.

Let's say you queued up 3 videos, watched them all, THEN (down)voted. Weird habit, but if that's your style, the 1-minute limit wouldn't be too extreme, and you wouldn't be needlessly stifled from expressing your opinion.

And the most damage someone could do if they went mental with the downvotes would be 100 downs after 100 minutes.

There's almost a downside to it: since they're doing it over an extended period of time, if it is malicious, it'll be much more insidious and harder to spot than, dare I name it as such, a "downvote of passion".

Hmm, actually that's exactly the point I was making - good to read the whole first, eh?

The counter-argument in favour which I didn't make was that if you slow someone down, they'll in theory "cool off" and think twice. Hmm.

let's just make out with the offenders' mothers...

why can't I be serious for one second?

Maybe it's because my uncle molested me...

...maybe it's because I molested my uncle.

I'll let you decide.

(downvote arrow can me located bottom right and corner of comment, see back for details. some restrictions may apply)

Ok, I see the point and it makes sense.

I just thought it might lead to a few less bodies lying around if we cool the itchy trigger fingers. After all something similar is done when downvoting a comment.

Nice to see someone is thinking. Once you start interfering with votes you create something that is so much worse than the problem its supposed to fix. Wikipedia being the perfect example.

gwiz665 says...

Downvote, schmownvote. I'll do what ant did in the day, downvote for any reason I see fit. It's my own downvote and my decision.

Of course downvoting on any reason beyond the video itself is bollocks, but if anything, ANYTHING in the video is in any way negative to me, I'll withhold the right to downvote. If your arbitraty rules withhold me from rightly downoting a video, the community is going to die.

Dag, social pressure is fine, but organised, systematic restrictions are bad. Amen, brother.
