Amazon sells music both in CD format and downloadable mp3s, and that raises the question of which format people prefer. So far I have linked to CDs if available and mp3s if not, but I would like to know if this is the most convenient way for people. I personally am still so old-fashioned that I buy music on CDs, but I realize some might be modern and righteous enough to pay for downloadable music. Given that VideoSift might gain revenue if we buy the music linked to, it is important to link to the stuff people is liable to spend money on. Please share your views on this.

honestly, if i was going to pay for music - which i still do sometimes - i'd want the cd. i need something physical in return for my sterling. hookers aren't always available.

also, i'm having trouble finding the minidisc option in the poll.

As Amazon is the only serious contender to give iTunes a bit of competition, my vote is for mp3 albums.

That is a good sentiment, but I doubt people's shopping preferences are going to be dictated by what VideoSift links to. And since the prime purpose of these links is to obtain money, I think it's more important to link to the stuff people will actually buy.

Depends on how interested I am in the artist and the pricing of the mp3s vs the CD. Mostly I'm trying to avoid CDs but I'll buy them for favourite bands or where the mp3s are overpriced.
I do like Amazon's mp3 store though and it's now my first choice for downloading paid music.

I voted I don't care because if I click through VideoSift to get to Amazon, and I want the MP3 version, I'll just do a little searching, find it and buy it. VideoSift should still get the commission, because I followed a link to Amazon from here.

I buy all my music as MP3's whenever possible. I get it right away, it's cheaper than getting the physical CD, and I don't have to worry where to store another CD I'll never touch because I would just rip the CD to MP3 anyway.

i hope thats the case, if the links are only valid for commission for the linked items it aint gonna pay much. if i ever buy amazon-stuff, i buy at least 5-10 items. (i mostly use play.com and smaller and specialised german, belgian and dutch websites though for books/games/music)

Putting my earlier pirate comment aside. I usually search through Amazon to find new albums...like what's new out. But I've only bought mp3s through itunes...since I got a mac laptop it's like it's ingrained on you to go to itunes. Even though I buy books from amazon I had no idea they had mp3s.

Who uses CD's nowadays?

I do! I like getting a physical object and I like admiring the cover art. I also like being sure that the artist gets his royalty, but that may just be the techno-fearing old geezer in me talking. Last but not least, the sound quality is usually better on CD, as the bitrate is usually too low on the mp3s I've seen for sale.

Tough to say. I know I put mp3, but I think I would prefer buying CD's and ripping copies to my computer. Having things on mp3 is just so much more convenient. I also absolutely loathe iTunes and DRM in general, so I guess my options are limited!

dag: Amazon has a downloadable music service now? Hmmm.

i only buy books.

but hey, ive found amazon has a half.com-ish used textbook buying thing. sooo... if i link off videosift to amazon then search for my textbook does vs still get some $? or should i sift a bunch of physical/recreational therapy videos and link up the textbook?

and who wants to discuss my exciting new career change?

i've only linked 2 videos to amazon so far, but they've both been mp3. the way i figure it, if you like the song and want just the song, there it is. if you don't, then clicking through the amazon link provides a link to the entire album as well. i just hope that VS gets the revenue for click-through as well as click-on links...

also, fairly frequently, amazon offers a selection of songs completely free of charge. i've discovered some GREAT music by browsing through and downloading pretty much everything i see. ( http://www.amazon.com/b/?&node=334897011 )
the free music has spurred me to purchase three entire albums in full.
