Texas Representative Warns of Gay Space Colony

kingmob says...

This is what bugs be about people who reference the bible. None of them have actually read it.

Going to catholic high school I ended reading all of it. And it is a shitstorm of antiquity people.

Jesus and Moses had no statements on queers gays or what not.

I don't know how he went from Jesus to spaceships...but hey his constituents must be happy.

Louie doesn't sound like one of the foofy lawyer types when he speaks.

Painful.
Wan't to downvote because I felt educational dampered by his idiocy and I have to work tomorrow.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew Trailer

RFlagg says...

Cool enough, though not sure I'm sold on this over Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator... this basically is that, but having VR requirement and set in a Star Trek universe (from the comments it appears to be the JJ Abrams universe). I'm not one to be upset about it being Ubisoft.

Pulsar: Lost Colony is another one in the same thing, though it seems to be a bit more ambitious in total scope, though missing the VR requirement. It has away missions. It's the one I'd be more interested in playing... were I to have enough friends to play any of these. lol.

Girlfriend Stumped by "Riddle"

spawnflagger says...

She'd be correct if the brothers were twins, but one of them was sent on a spaceship moving really fast, such that he ages at half the rate relative to the brother left on Earth.

But somehow I doubt this is the thought in her head during this video...

Going Interstellar - Photonic Propulsion

newtboy says...

I'm confused. They imply a 3 day trip to mars is possible, but is that at the maximum speed photonic propulsion can deliver, or do they include the acceleration and deceleration times? As I understood it, photonic propulsion can deliver extreme speeds, but only at a minimal acceleration. That means that maximum speed is much faster, but accelerating to that speed takes immensely longer, and the same goes for deceleration. Maybe they've invented a new method I've not heard of with much higher acceleration, but that's not really mentioned in the video.
They actually seem to imply they plan to use the same tech as cyclotrons, which means essentially a huge rail gun (and that's not photonic propulsion BTW, it's magnetic). Again, the amount of propulsion is miniscule, but the top speed is high with that method. Yes, you can expel matter at near speed of light, but only in tiny amounts and using huge amounts of energy.
Yes, it may take 10 minutes to achieve 30% the speed of light....with single molecules or atoms.
There are MANY reasons why we can't do this at macro sizes. Just look at the size of a cyclotron needed to accelerate an atom to those relativistic speeds. Now think about sizing that up to accelerate enough matter to move a spaceship instead of a single atom and it's likely near the size of the entire planet. We won't be building a cyclotron that size ever, nor will we likely ever shrink the accelerators to a size where they can fit inside a spaceship to shoot trillions of atoms out like a light speed gun. They are just too big and use too much power. Maybe once fusion is perfected and miniaturization also perfected it could work for interstellar travel, but never for local space travel, the acceleration levels are just too small.
Also, it seems solar sails give the same or better acceleration to the same top speeds without the impossible technology....but they don't work too well for stopping except at other stars.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny - Trailer 2

newtboy says...

I don't understand.
When you say you never cared for "these films", what do you mean? You could not be referring to just the two crouching tiger hidden dragon films, because you haven't seen the second one, it's not out yet. Are you referring to Chinese films made for American audiences in general, or something else?
If you mean Crouching Tiger specifically, I'll disagree with that opinion. I thought Crouching Tiger #1 was great, and I also quite enjoyed House of Flying Daggers, which was a bit similar to me.

That said, my first choice of Chinese fantasy action films (that I've seen) would be Holy Weapon aka Hopy Weapon aka Holy Shit! Now that was some good insanity Kung Fu, and included a flying all virgin Kung Fu version of 'crippletron' (a bit like Voltron, but instead of a giant robot made of spaceships or other smaller robots, it's a giant person made out of regular people) and a human Cuisinart named Super Sword. Now THAT was some insane awesomeness.

I never cared for these films. There are so many, greater eastern films of fantasy and action.

Still! Yay sequels?

An Unfortunate History of White Actors Playing Other Races

enoch says...

@JiggaJonson
khan noonien singh was a genetically enhanced human prince from the 1990's and participated in the eugenics wars, which consequently was the reason for his,and his followers, fleeing to space and escaping the inevitable aftermath from their defeat.

his spaceship the botany bay was discovered 300 years later by captain kirk and the starship enterprise, perfectly preserved in cryogenic sleep.

you all may bow to my geek prowess.

i think this video is referring to the original actor and appear to have taken issue with cumberbatch not being a latin actor.

which i agree with you is pretty damn nitpicky.

on another note.
my first date ever with a young black woman was soul man, starring c thomas howel.i didnt really research the movie and was mortified when c thomas howel painted his face as black man.thank god she was a good sport.though she did bust my chops for months after.

true story.

Blue Origin New Shepard Flies to Space, Lands Safely

artician says...

I used to want to build a "spaceship" with my father when I was a kid. I loved the snow-speeders from Empire Strikes Back. I remember asking my dad where you got the lasers from, and if you could pick them up at the hardware store like everything else.

The Fountain Explained

EMPIRE says...

I love The Fountain, and I pretty much interpreted the movie in the same way as the guy who did the video (give or take a few details).

I agree that it's a movie about coming to terms with death, and that death is not just a part of life. Life needs death to exist and vice-versa. We are all here, because stars died, and from their demise came the stuff that made our existence possible. And plants and animals die (or are killed) so that we can carry on living. And when we die, it doesn't really matter if we are buried or cremated. The stuff we are made of, the basic components of it, return to where it came from. To where it always belonged. We we're just borrowing it.

I think the tree in the spaceship is in fact the tree Tom planted over his wife's grave. And in his inability to accept her death and his eventual own, he grew attached to the tree because in a way it was the only thing he had left that was a part of his long gone wife. Her body nourished the tree, and in that sense became a part of it. But even trees don't live forever, and after 500 years the tree is dying, and once again he can't accept it. That's why he shouted at his memories of her to leave him alone. He just couldn't take it anymore. Living forever and never being able to let go, is not an easy way to live.

His death in the end, renewed the tree, making it bloom once again. Also I don't agree that he's not rational (as the video puts it). I think that's precisely the problem with Tom. He's completely rational, and ceasing to be and never again seeing his loved ones, scares him more than anything else.

I'm an atheist, and therefore I consider myself a rational person, but this movie really gave me a much needed boost to come to terms with death. Not just mine but of everyone I know. It will be terrible (as it is) when it happens, but not accepting it is denying the universe, and denying reality.

Stars die too. What chances did we ever had?

I've always wondered: What happens to all those laser blasts that miss the target and are pointed out toward open space?

Do they just continue on forever until they hit something (asteroid, planet, star, alien spaceship) or get sucked into a black hole?

(Pretty awesome gaming technology btw.)

If I Die on Mars

robbersdog49 says...

If they want this mission to succeed the hardest thing is going to be separating out the nutters. I would imagine the biggest risk to the people on the spaceship once they've made it into space is each other. Being locked up with three other people and no way to ever, ever get away from them, it's all going to be about who can make that happen.

There's a good reason the first men on the moon were military. Stress tested and hardened. While I can see the british lad in this video is very intelligent I'd still rather have someone like Neil Armstrong at my back if the shit hit the fan.

I can see how this is all trying to raise awareness of the project but I'll be amazed if they send anyone who isn't tried and tested.

The Best and Worst Movies of 2014 (Cinema Talk Post)

ChaosEngine says...

Oh man, there was some really cool and interesting stuff there.

And then .... Interstellar?? I'm with you on Nolan; I think he's great. I loved Inception, The Prestige, Insomnia, Memento. I even think The Dark Knight Rises is unfairly maligned (it's not as good as The Dark Knight, but it was never going to be).

But Interstellar was terrible... IMO his worst movie. It squanders a great premise and some amazing visuals on a story that's all over the place.

Put it this way, Prometheus was the closest I've ever come to walking out of a movie. Its stupidity was just offensive. By the end I was rooting for the alien, the rolling spaceship, anything to kill the main characters and end its god-awfulness. But by the end of Interstellar, I was just bored.

It's certainly not the worst movie of 2014, but it was the biggest disappointment for me.

Oh, and any top 10 of 2014 that doesn't include the Lego Movie is missing its soul
