The Art of Making a Nixie Tube

robbersdog49 says...

That's a very interesting video. He's making lovely, handmade electronics, something you just don't see at all any more.

It's at times an almost painfully inefficient process. Robots are taking a lot of jobs from people, but I think there will always be a market for such hand made, hand crafted goods. Each one is different. They're a little wonky, a little taller, shorter, whatever. A machine would make them much better in every objective way. Faster, more consistent and more reliable. But it could never give them the charm they so obviously have.

How To Crack An Electronic Safe With A Magnet And A Sock

robbersdog49 says...

It's not the value of the safe that's important, it's the value of the contents. If you've only got stuff worth $173 you're probably not going to buy a safe worth that much to keep it in...

spawnflagger said:

To be fair, that is a Hugh Jass rare-earth (neodymium) magnet, that costs $40 more than the safe (quick search example- $173 vs. safe $134), and not likely that a casual thief would have it on hand. Good for a locksmith to invest in though.

I would like to see them test progressively smaller magnets, to see what the smallest is that would still do the trick.

Solving By Using 'Extreme Case' Puzzles With Physics Girl

robbersdog49 says...

Genius! Make it water and the wood floats. (Same effect as mine but feels a lot more relevant to the question).

L0cky said:

The extreme case I thought of here wasn't about the balloon, it was about the air. Imagine the air was a lot denser... like water, or jelly.

I wasn't familiar with the term 'extreme cases' but use this all the time when making logical arguments, and think of it as exaggeration to help illustrate a point.

Unfortunately, while I think it makes it easier for me to visualize the point, people are often blinded by the comical nature of the exaggeration

"What do you mean if there were 10 zillion Chinese people on the island of Malta and 3 Brits had the Americas to themselves? The world should still learn English!"

(Someone trying to argue that even if Chinese was predominant, English would still be used in a larger geographical area, and me attempting to use exaggeration to illustrate that it's besides the point).

Solving By Using 'Extreme Case' Puzzles With Physics Girl

robbersdog49 says...

Problem 1: Tip toward the wood, as the wood will lose more buoyancy from the air than the lead.

As for the extreme case here, let's use the helium balloon. You tie the helium balloon to the right hand side of the scale. Now, to get the bar on the scale horizontal (balanced) you need to hang the lead weight closer to the fulcrum but on the right hand side of the scale too.

Now remove the air.

The balloon was only pulling up because of the air. Without the air it will hang down. So, we now have two things hanging down on the same side of the scale, so it's very obvious which way the scale will swing...

Problem 2: pi*20m Circumference = pi*diameter. Poles increase diameter by 20m. Really not sure where the 'extreme case' comes into this though?

Stormsinger said:

Beats the hell out of me.

Just to noodle around a bit, the only extreme I can think of about the scales would be to substitute an extremely low density object for the wood. Say, a helium filled balloon? But that assumes that she did in fact mean equal mass for the two objects, and wouldn't actually give valid readings on a scale in atmosphere anyway.

Extreme cases are a rather specialized approach, as I remember...its not really a common, or easy way to get answers. I got the feeling this was kind of a "wannabee" presentation. Like she wanted to do "Smarter every day" stuff but isn't quite able to find and explain interesting non-intuitive problems well.

The War on Science

robbersdog49 says...

It is mind boggling that people in this day and age can even consider doing anything other than completely embracing science. Our world is utterly dependent on science. Everything have use, everything we interact with, everything is here because of science. How can there be a war on science? It just doesn't make any sense.

But it's here. It's absolute madness, but it's here.

Numberphile: Fold and Cut Theorem

robbersdog49 says...

Interesting but it bugs me that the first example, the square, she does sub-optimally. Make the first fold corner to corner, then the second fold in half in line with the other corner then cut. Two folds, one cut. She does three folds one cut.

Mysterious video of ants circling an iPhone

robbersdog49 says...

I'm amazed snopes is still saying undetermined. These look absolutely nothing like ants. They don't move like ants, they don't look like ants. It's CG, that's all. It would be easy to replicate this if it was true.

This Much Will Kill You

robbersdog49 says...

It's fucking tragic. The family got a $16,500,000 payout from the station, but I'm sure they'd much rather just have their mum back.

"Those people that are drinking all that water can get sick and possibly die from water intoxication," Brooks said, to which disc jockeys replied they "were aware of that" and that contestants had signed a release "so we're not responsible."

The organisers openly said that they knew it could kill the contestants but they don't care because they signed wavers so it's their fault if they die!

remember the radio show where they had a water drinking contest?
a nurse called in and urged them to stop, and the DJs laughed it off.
the contest winner died the next day.

You have no right to remain silent in Henrico County.

robbersdog49 says...

What? I even quoted you saying it.

Here, I'll quote it again:

"people like this, who are intentionally pretending to be threats"

How on earth is this anything other than you saying he's pretending to be a threat. This is a direct quote from you. I'm not inventing anything here.

Here's an idea. If you don't want people saying you said something, don't fucking say it. Especially in written form so everyone can see exactly what you said.

EDIT: Before the inevitable "I said he was pretending, not that he actually was a threat" bollox, how is he even pretending to be a threat? Nothing about this is threatening. Nothing. You brought up the threatening bit, so I'd like to know what is threatening about the guy filming. What is he pretending to do that's threatening?

Babymech said:

I don't know, person who is putting words in my mouth, how is he being a threat?

You have no right to remain silent in Henrico County.

robbersdog49 says...

What on earth are you talking about? How on earth is this guy being any kind of threat?

Babymech said:

..and people like this, who are intentionally pretending to be threats in order to provoke poor reactions...

You have no right to remain silent in Henrico County.

robbersdog49 says...

How is anyone making excuses for the police here?

So fucking what if he was trying to provoke a reaction? His reasons for filming the police like he did don't come into it at all. So what if the officers didn't like it and so what if he did it for this reason.

I don't see how any of this is relevant. This is a video of a person acting completely legally and within his rights and being arrested just because the police didn't like it.

So what if it's provoking, the police should be trained to be able to deal with a provocative situation. You know what would have ended this? The police doing their jobs and ignoring him. That's what should have happened.

Being rude isn't against the law. It's not OK for police to arrest someone for being rude. The only thing this guy was doing was filming the police and people think that's wrong? Or he didn't answer their questions? He's allowed to do that. It's OK. How can you say he was acting like a tool? He did nothing wrong.

The police are supposedly trained individuals. They shouldn't be reacting to provocation, especially when it's so passive as this example. This guy is hardly pushing his luck here. He made no threats to the officers, he didn't do anything even remotely violent or threatening he just exercised his rights. So the police didn't like it, so what?

Fucking apologists. The law is what it is and the police should be held to a high standard regarding it. They should do their job. Let's get this straight, what they did here was arrest someone just because they didn't like what he was doing, even though what he was doing was perfectly legal. That should disgust you, it really should. It shouldn't be OK because you think the guy was being a bit of a dick. That's not relevant because being a bit of a dick shouldn't get you arrested. It's only an excuse if you think that it's not unreasonable for the police to arrest people they just don't like.

Why Bikes Stay Up - MinutePhysics

robbersdog49 says...

Both mechanisms involve wheels, but beyond that there's no similarity. The bike would still stay upright if the tyres had no width at the point of contact with the ground, so there was no increase nor decrease in the diameter of the wheel as the bike leaned.

Payback said:

I wonder if it has anything to do with why train wheels stay on the rails due to being tapered, and the flange is only there for emergencies. They're self-centering.

Like, when the bike wheel turns, it becomes effectively a larger system that wants to return to being smaller.
