Jinxsays...

This film is so scatter brained and the story is so fucking ham. I mean really, the fifth element is life or something? Virtually nothing is explained the characters are completely OTT and unrealistic...and I fucking love it. Wish there were more films like it.

It's great to watch a film that doesn't feel it has to explain itself all the time. So much stuf was just a given in this film. I wish more directors would do this.

Oh yeah, fifth element is love. It doesn't have to make sense, it's just cute

I love this movie... I may very well be one of the few (if not the only) person in the world to have a shot of the movie framed and hanging on my living room wall. I'm such a fan of the 5th element, and futuristic cities, that I managed to track down the company responsible for the SFX, and more specifically, the artist who did some of the matte paintings. I sent him an email a few years ago, and said I was a big fan, and he sent me an image of the shot I had asked, in the largest available resolution.
It's that image of the floating chinese restaurant leaving Dallas' apartment window, with future-new york in the back.
Love it.

That's awesome! How big is the picture?

Agree completely on that whole not having to explain itself. Apparently it was written by a teenage Luc Besson and thinking about it does sort of reflect the kind of story you make up as a kid. A lot of imagination, not much direction and completely carefree.

My intepretation was always that Leeloo was the fifth element. She represents life in its purest most innocent form as a counterpart to that wierd ball of death/evil that calls Zorg up on the phone (wat.). Leeloo learns of all the atrocities humanity commits, she loses sight of the point of life until Gorban gives her a reason. Love is the key but not the element imo. I just threw up a little. But here we are analysing a film which defies it. It just wants to show us something fantastical and doesn't care if we understand or not.

ps. That Gorban - Leeloo relationship is still wierd. I was getting a father daughter vibe until they touch lips at the end. Meanwhile in Leon...

Somehow this is the exact scene that I imagined before you even described it. I'm so very jealous.

This sift has me thinking about this movie again.

It should have been awful. There are so many things wrong with it. The nonsensical plot. The cliches (Leeloo happens to fall into the one cab piloted by ex super commando Korben? The fifth element is love?). Trickys acting (I've seen forests that were less wooden). The card carrying villains. Casting the directors model girlfriend in the title role.
I could go on.

Yet it takes all these things that should make it terrible and somehow makes it work for it by virtue of sheer fucking awesome.

I saw this when it came out in the cinema, and had it on VHS (that was when we magnetically encoded images and sound on tape kids!) for years.

And you know, I haven't seen it in a decade. Tomorrow, I'm going to buy some nice beer, find it on bluray or itunes or whatever and watch it again.

And honestly...

I can't fucking wait
