I wonder though, while the reflective coating does seem to get burnt off, the layer that contains the pits is right next to it. I can't help but think atleast some data can still be pulled from it with either a modified read laser, or even by adding a new reflective layer to the back. It's sort of like a cookie sheet where the cookies signify the pits. While the majority of the cookie is now gone, you can still see a footprint of where it was.
