Bad Idea: using a hydraulic hammer to demolish a building

UPDATE: According to this link it seems that the driver survived the accident, despite the excavator being hit by concrete: http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/9498105-see-video-building-collapse-in-egypt

Can someone that isn't an idiot about engineering explain to me why using a hydraulic hammer is a terrible idea?

I mean, I realize that standing in the shadow of anything that you're trying to make fall down is a stupid idea, but is it because you're guaranteed that its collapse will be larger than its own footprint?

I think the idea is just that a hydraulic hammer requires you to be in close proximity to the thing your demolishing. I'd say that when demolishing a building, standing at least as far away as the height of the building is probably a good rule of thumb.

*snuff?

Do we know he's dead? Is there any information to say he died? I mean, it looks like he probably should be, and anyone involved in that should be held for criminal negligence, but we don't know he died, maybe the cab of the digger was very strong and saved him?

I tried to find a legitimate news article that said if he was hurt or killed, but could only find online speculation. It looked to me that the building wasn't directly headed at him, and that he was running away when it landed. I wouldn't have sifted it if I had thought he died.

a) We can't tell from the video if this accident was fatal.

b) Regardless of what happened to the operator, I certainly wouldn't say the video is "explicit depiction of loss of human life" [FAQ].

I'm going to assume for my own peace of mind that he's ok and recovering in hospital from dust inhalation. There are plenty of times during earthquakes when people survive building collapses while inside the building.

I'll add a warning in the description, and *return.

Yeah......something like that. Use chains to pull the supports out from a distance or push it over with something that can reach at least halfway up it's height. Better yet is a combination of both, pull the structure's supports out while pushing it in the direction the supports are gone. And throw some chains up high on it to help topple it.

They topple trees near houses by cutting a big wedge out to make it fall away from the house, cut the rest of the tree off and maintain pressure on the tree so it can't fall the other way if a big gust comes along or the tree is rotten or just some sort of freak thing where the tree tries to go wrong way. If possible they will usually cut the top off the tree off so it's easier to handle, but sometimes you can't do that when trees are unstable...like hit by lightning or broken due to storms.

And getting out of the machinery. Those things have roll cages on them that are supposed to support the weight of the vehicle if they roll over onto their side and then some. Not sure how it'd handle being punctured by rebar or narrow shafts of concrete, but it'd at least stand up to crushing better than your body.

"Are you sure that's safe, boss?"
"Yes, very safe, I swear.. You'll be fine."

With the amount of people and equipment around I could easily imagine there's a foreman in charge.

And that happened without anything even hitting it!! IS IT MAGIC? Guess we better rethink our whole approach to building mechanics. Cuz like, you build a building, you expect it to stay built, not to fall on its own just because it felt distraught over its two older siblings.

I guess those support columns were made of Jell-O. That has to be it.

Alright, let me explain B.

There was the video on the sift a while back of a man on a scooter ramming an elevator door until the door broke and he fell to his death.

The death occurred in the elevator shaft itself, not on screen. However, it was generally agreed upon that literally watching the last 4 seconds of someones life was disrespectful and disturbing in its own right.
