National flag icons in comments?

Back in the 4.0 brainstorm period, I had suggested putting little flag icons (famfamfam puts out a free set, so it wasn't much work) near users' names so that we could tell where a user was from (if they chose to divulge) at a glance. My rationale was that it can be an important context to have in certain discussions: politics, history, religion, etc. It didn't catch on, though they were added to our profile pages.

Now it seems, at least to me, that the Sift has continued to grow even more international and so I'm floating the idea again to see if it can get any traction. Here's a mockup:

How would knowing the country a Sifter is from affect the context in which you approach a discussion?
Just curious

I don't think it would necessarily affect my approach but it could change the perspective on a comment.

I wish I had a good example ready. If I find one, I'll share.

I think this is a neat little idea. Primarily I think it's interesting and shows the diverse community we have here.

But yeah, there are times when it might help better understand someone's viewpoint, or even their choice of spelling for a particular word.

This seems especially helpful for political discussions -- of which there are loads here. I often do that already -- zip over to someone's profile page to see literally where they are coming from.

It does clutter it up. However, it seems like clutter for a purpose.

I would have loved to have been able to search for users by country for the Australian Siftup, that's for sure.

People have to opt into it, but I think it'd be great.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

That's a good point. integrated with search it would be useful - also for when Siftbot is starting its pogroms.>> ^spoco2:

I like it too, but I do agree on the cluttering. Maybe we could experiment with putting it different places. We could also consider moving either that or the star icon in front of the name instead.

I would like the background of each and every comment I post to have a watermark of an American Bald Eagle transposed in front of "Old Glory" waving in the winds of triumph, success, and baby Jesus. I also want the phrase "Never Forget..." as a signature. That way I always remember to lock the door before going to work.

I can totally make you a userstyle that does that. But I probably won't.

Actually, if I get my comment flags, I'll make you your userstyle.

My identity is not tied to my country. Also I hate flags and what they represent. So this better be opt-in or I'm going to throw my toys IN YO FACE.

It's already opt-in. Flags are displayed on your profile page if you choose to set your country. I'm just asking for them to be displayed by comments too.
