Where Are These "Good Cops" I Hear About?

A cellphone video entered into the court record by the U.S. Attorney’s office of Paterson police officer Ruben McAusland pulling on hospital gloves and then violently striking an attempted suicide victim in the face. McAusland was sentenced Wednesday to more than five years in federal prison for assault, and for distributing drugs he stole from a crime scene while on duty. (Video courtesy of the U.S. Attorney’s office)
Reports are this was the second assault on this victim who McAusland was caught on security camera punching in the face while in he was seated in a wheelchair in the waiting room, then he put on gloves before attacking the man again, gleefully filmed by the other officer, Roger Then, who is awaiting sentencing on charges that he filmed the hospital room assault on his phone and falsified reports to hide the beatings.
The victim's orbital socket was shattered requiring surgery.

Apparently this only came to light when McAusland was arrested on major drug charges and his cell phone was searched, thanks to other officers covering up his crimes he almost got away with it.

You think this is exceptional?

Let's create an imaginary group, we'll call them Kopz. Now, Kopz are trusted. Kopz are rarely, if ever prosecuted if they commit crimes in the line of duty. If a member of Kopz does something bad, it's his friends, other Kopz who will investigate. If he's actually caught and his fellow Kopz turn him over for prosecution, well the Kopz have a very cozy relationship with prosecutors, so he'll probably have a friend there too. Oh and Kopz are allowed to carry guns and have a monopoly on legal violence.

What kind of person do you think would want to join Kopz?

Now, let's say the people who pick who is and who isn't allowed to join the Kopz, are themselves Kopz. After several generations of inbreeding, what sort of people do you think they'll select to join their fraternity?

These guys only ever get busted when there is absolute incontrovertible video evidence, and even then the first words out of every police chief's mouth inevitably are, "Well, the video doesn't tell the WHOLE story. We need to know the context before we can decide if the behaviour was inappropriate." (guess what, he's a Kopz too!)

only 5 years? That's what a normal person would get for stealing evidence and selling drugs alone. Should be 15 years minimum. Still getting special treatment as a cop.

I'm fine with it as long as that's 5 years in gen pop with no special privileges or protection. He wouldn't last 5 days.

That's another problem America has.

No, in addition to him being a drug stealing, drug dealing, abusive, violent, unrepentant, unafraid, public, gleeful, even proud thug, he's undeniably also a killer, if not directly by his own hand then through his long term drug business. I think it's fair to assume he's stolen more than one life with false charges too.

I've never murdered anyone, I've only suggested it's justifiable, even justice in some cases.

BSRsaid:

You mean in addition to you?

BSRsays...

Yes, I know. That's the problem.

EDIT: If equal justice gives you satisfaction, how does that make you different from him?

He seeks neither equality nor justice, he seeks self enrichment and satisfaction at other's expense.
If you don't think some people deserve to die, we disagree.

By including the words 'on tape', you know this make your comment look like the problem here is that he was caught?

That's not the problem.

Cop commits crime on tape... Has he not learned anything in cop class 101?

Guilty. Throw the book at him .

BSRsays...

This is not about what he seeks or doesn't seek. It's about the false satisfaction you may feel about harming or killing another person as punishment.

I don't think people "deserve" to die because that's already written into the program for all of us. I do think people should live with what they've done.

I would not hesitate to kill someone or give my life if it was my only choice to save a life or relieve the pain of a leg cramp. I look at it from a "First Aid" point of view. If you can't remove the victim from the danger, remove the danger from the victim.

Once the danger is eliminated or contained, punishment teaches nothing except to respect or fear that which can kick your ass. Which, after all was the goal to begin with in this case. Punishment is only meant for the pleasure of the punisher. Nothing more.

Killing someone as a form of punishment only makes you a killer. If that's your dream then you are in the right place to do it. But I think there are better dreams to be had. Don't dream it, be it.

You asked how we differed. I answered.

It's not about punishment or my satisfaction, it's about justice and public safety, and setting a good public precedent, a shining example for others considering following his path.

Living with what they've done as a punishment or justice implies everyone has a conscience. That's clearly not the case.

The only way to remove the danger here is permanently, since he gets special cop treatment, only 5 years for a life sentence worth of crime, less with parole, that means one thing.
That's not punishment, it's harsh reality.

Well, we're out of time here tonight but, don't forget to tune in tomorrow when our guest will be ant. He'll be here to talk about what it's like to dedicate yourself to VideoSift and do the thankless job of combing through each and every video submission and perfecting them by adding the missing channels that so many of us are just too lazy or stupid to do correctly.

Until then this has been another episode of POINT - WHAT'S YOUR POINT with your hosts newtboy and BSR. Goodnight!

*Backstage* Good show newt. I thought for sure you would have said something about the leg cramp.
