What You Won't See On National Cable News...Civil Town Halls On Health Insurance Reform [Various Networks, August 11-12, 2009]

I don't see how anyone can defend our current health care system, unless they are somehow benefiting by the way it is currently run.

We spend twice as much in terms of GDP than England, and have less people covered, and those that are covered are receiving inferior care.

My mother had to have some tests done to see about some lumps on her chest. She's on Medicare, and they charged her $500 because tests like that aren't covered. She's lucky she only had one set of tests. What kind of a system is that when preventative care is excluded from coverage? She's on a fixed income and can't afford the $500/month payment. Most seniors can't.

Hell, most people can't.

^ The stupid belief is that private health insurance if truly deregulated would cover people. Which is inanely dense. Look at the insurance market in any other commodity, the insurer is not on your side. Their incentive is to deny claims not fulfill them. This might work in strict legally defined markets like housing or car insurance but not health as health depends on alot of factors beyond people's control. My private health insurance may not cover pre-existing conditions, so if I have a heart defect and I get a heart attack. That could be thought of as a pre-existing condition.

Health care should not be in the realm of the private market, especially through provision of insurance. It's not a tangible commodity where transactions and coverage can be strictly defined.

Not mentioning the usual blah blah US spends the most, covers the least, has the worst health care indicators.

Personally as someone living outside of the US am extremely fascinated in the ferocity of opposition to Obama's health care reform, its not perfect and very middle ground, being still very much rooted in the private insurance industry. But jesus the opposition to it sounds is akin to Obama imposing fascism.

being in the uk, the views ive seen on the americen news of "we dont want what they have in the uk" seem a bit shortsighted. You can go private insurance here if you want, but you dont *have* to. Yea, you have to wait a while for an operation, and yes, its not perfect, but compared to having nothing, it looks pretty attractive.

Dont listen to the conservative/republican idiots. They want you to think their view point reflects the national trend, and that, the majority of Americans are against the health care reform of Mr. Obama. Its simply a lie. Just like that lie about those WMDs in Irag. And the lie that torturing detainees produced 'actionable intelligence', thanks to 'enhanced interogation techiques'. Or the lie that Mr. Obama is not a citizen of the USA.

The facts are, the majority of Americans want to know exactly what is the concept, and do have some fears regarding their current and future health care. Its really disappointing that the conservatives/republicans do not report what is and isnt in the bill, in a factual manner (to keep democrats/liberals) truthful and honest. But rather, send a stream of hatred, miss information, and generating tons of fear.

Once people are informed on the facts, it makes the conservatives/republicans look pretty immature, foolish, and plain hypocrits. It'll be a good system. It wont be perfect, but it will by and large, do a good job. It'll improve the health care for 40-60 million of my fellow Americans, increase the care given from hospitals, and cut down on health care costs. There is no silver bullet (as conservatives complain, and claim they have). In fact, the next few years, will see more laws past to address the stuff that doesnt work, and reinforce the stuff that does work. In the end, the conservatives/republicans will be the foolish ones, for not getting on board and discussing this as adults rather then as children.

Even if this is payed for by the DNC, they make a good point. The media loves to report on conflict and scandal. As a result the tiny minority of loud aggressive cockbags crackpots have gotten far too much coverage and attention. From how they behave they don't even deserve to be any part of the debate, much less be the focus.

Paybacksays...

Of course you won't see that on the national media; that doesn't sell a fucking thing. Why would an advertiser pay to advertise on a news show that typically reported facts? WTF do you think the media is for, unbiased reporting of facts, figures and history? Fucking wake up and smell the sexy. Rupert knows what you want in your pornography, I mean news.

Why do people refer to a place as complex as something like the United States like it is a thing you can survey from a single perspective (even an outside one) and think you have figured it out.

In reply to this comment by westy:

Strangely enough when I discuss it with people they often mention the system proposed as a fascist movement of some sort, that much I can attest to. There are not enough hours in teh day to listen to all the right wing bullshit they must be filling their heads with but the people in opposition to the plan, simply put, are misinformed.

Some oppose it because they dont want one gov run system (not proposed)
Some oppose it because they dont want tax dollars going towards abortions (laws on teh books against gov funded abortions already)
Some oppose it because they dont want the gov choosing their doctors (already doesnt happen with medicare and furthermore nearly all private insurance already dictates which doctors/hospitals u can/can't go to)
The list goes on...

The sad thing is, misinformation is being asserted as fact and people are too lazy to get info from a reliable source or simply multiple sources for verification, spreading rumors is much more fun.

Me? I talk about it every chance I get because my quality of life has been seriously effected by privatized insurance and their unwillingness to cover people with legitimate insurance claims.

You have sometimes have to wait for surgery on the UK?

.. who am I kidding you have to here as well. My nephew had to wait a week to get his broken leg put in cast and my sister is one of the top employees of the largest store chain in the world, Aldi and has great insurance.

People who go to the emergency room for non-life threatening injuries can expect a wait of 8 to 12 hours. People have been known to die while they wait. Even in the small hospital where I live (covers my entire county, which has a population of 18'000 people. But even with that few people (the smallest county in NY State) emergency room waits can reach 6 hours.

So there is a HUGE amount of disinformation out there. Any citizen who is against reform clearly has not had to deal with it or they simply have fallen pray to Glenn Becks conspiracies and out right lies.

In the end reform will pass, but it won't be the type of change we truly need, but hopefully it will at least help, and cover every single citizen of this country.

In the end what really needs to happen is that health care should not be a business. As long as profits are more important than actual results, our system will never be as good as England's or Canada's.

But hey, Capitalism is god in this country. So don't expect that to happen.. ever.
