Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarckson and James May being best at what English do, poking fun at national stereotypes. Either that or being racist.

This segment was edited out of the US version by the BBC. It will be broadcast on Monday (14/02/2011).

I don't really care that they made fun of Mexicans, and I have Mexican family. Its what they've always done, and I always thought it was pretty tongue in cheek. I think the real crime here is that it just isn't funny. That and the rest of Top Gear. I used to love that programme, but maybe I've grown up a little bit, or more likely its just got increasingly infantile. Its painful to watch at times such is their desperation to be edgy. The whole show is painfully scripted in what I can only imagine is an attempt to top the last seasons craziness, but its all become a bit too pantomime.

I honestly wouldn't mind if it was put out to pasture.

Who gives a fuck...the number of people who watch Top Gear is greater than 3 times the Population of Mexico...so they can SUCK IT!

Are you kidding me? In Mexico, they're poor and Catholic...nothing is watched more than the population of a poor Catholic country

... and the following week, they ripped on the Albanians. Just like they insulted almost everyone over the course of the last ~130 episodes, particularly the French. Be a good sport, stop getting your panties in a bunch.

WKBsays...

I don't mind a bit of racial humor at all but that was just lazy and unfunny. It was about as innovative as making jokes about American Blacks liking watermelon. The food bit was particularly ignorant because they are obviously describing the Americanized version of Mexican food that is slathered in cheese.

the PC police always getting fucking offended for someone else.

It was a joke. If it was an arian nation rally talking shit about some nationality or race, that I would find offensive because I know they actually mean it.

The guys from Top Gear were kidding about it.

There's a world of difference between the 2.

Strange. Soutpark's Cartman can tell African refugees to quit being bums and find jobs, and he can sing "I hate Jews" to the tune of the draddle song, but it's THIS that crosses the sifts line of good taste?

What?

Deanosays...

You know if any significant number of people are getting up in arms about this they are way too thin-skinned and should have far better things to do than bashing a comedy motoring programme.

Yes these are lazy stereotypes but they happily take the piss out of themselves and anyone else. It's a silly programme, not always as funny as it thinks it is and always much better when they do serious motoring items.

And what about the millions of websites saying unpleasant things about Mexico? Is someone going to spend time and money getting those censored? No of course not, free speech is always going to bring you into contact with things you don't like to hear. Suck it up.

As an Englishman if I spent my days explaining we don't all have crap teeth, live in Castles, are rubbish in bed and dress like tramps I'd never leave the house.

This has reminded me of a program in Jeremy Clarkson's CV that might be interesting. Called Jeremy Clarkson meets the Neighbours he travelled around Europe seeing if people matched their stereotypes. And then at the end a representive from that country would be interviewed and happily mock their nation.

If they were going to describe a car based on racial stereotypes, wouldn't a Mexican car be able to drive across rivers, jump 30ft. fences and work farm land?

To be fair, Mexicans practically build all the cars now anyway, why not build one of your own. Here's a list of car manufacturers who have cars that are currently built in Mexico: Acura, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, FAW, Ferrari, Fiat, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Lamborghini, Land Rover, Lincoln, Maserati, Mastretta, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, MINI, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Pontiac, Porsche, Radical, Renault, Saab, SEAT, Smart, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo. As it was pointed out in Steve Coogan's article, there is a huge difference between rich white people making fun of other rich white people, and rich white people making fun of mexicans. For example, the same racist joke can be perfectly acceptable coming from a black comedian, but quite offensive when told by a white comedian.

I imagine that there's not much exposure to Mexicans in Britain, and perhaps Britain is spared the tension between different races, cultures, and social/economic status that long marred American history. So out of sheer ignorance I guess Hammond's joke could seem quite harmless.

Just out of curiosity, how would people react if an Englishman said similarly degrading things about the Scottish or Indians? (though I'm sure Scotland is much better off than Mexico)

The difference is that in South Park, the audience knows that Cartman is an asshole, and a fictional character that holds hyperbolically abhorrent beliefs for the comic effect of the show.

Lodurrsays...

There's no social commentary in their racist jokes. Cartman calling people "jew" is social commentary because it reflects more on Cartman than on actual jews. Gabriel Iglesias' racist gift basket (see link in comment above) is social commentary. Even Michael Richards' "he's a nigger" episode had more social commentary than calling one race lazy and worthless. There isn't even a hint of truth in it. Latinos, as a group, are the hardest working people I've ever known, and most of them hardly sleep because they have multiple jobs.

A big part of the problem is that they're picking on a country with serious economic problems. It's easy for the French not to take offense at French jokes because they've been doing pretty well for the past thousand years. It was only a few hundred years ago that most Mexicans lived and worked as a systematically oppressed lower class, and they still have far to go to have a modern standard of living for the majority of their population.

Poking fun at a disadvantaged group when you're part of an advantaged one is always tasteless. Fuck these lazy talentless hacks and fuck the BBC for funding them.

And yet the actors on Top Gear are believed to be straight faced actual commentators????

Mayhaps you haven't watched the show enough, the characters on Top Gear are meant to be over the top insensitive, arrogant and selfish jerks for our amusement.... sounds a lot like Cartman to me.

South Park as social commentary... Right up there with Twain, Orwell and Oscar Wilde, isn't it?

Top Gear's characters routinely make fun of everyone and everything, it's the entire set-up of their characters and is meant to be as much of a 'commentary' as is Southpark. To suggest that of every group in the world they've already made fun of, the Mexicans should be off limits because they can't take it strikes me as more racist than Top Gear's even handed assaults on everything. And I shouldn't need to point out that SoutPark's assaults on everything go at least 5 steps further past 'good taste' than Top Gear ever does.
