This is the Robocop that I really wanted to see when I saw Robocop as a kid. This modern trailer was born straight from my childhood imagination of what I wanted from that original film, yet as an adult, it has turned to ash in my mouth.

coolhundsays...

When looking at all these recent reboots, I feel like I could make a fortune as director and writer in Hollywood.
Only Total Recall was kinda good, because it felt like a completely new movie.

shuacsays...

What cracks me up about these reboots is the truly strange reaction they elicit. Reactions such as, "Don't ruin RoboCop!" and "Leave my childhood alone!" and the like.

So I always enjoy pointing out that, "Did you know when they reboot a franchise, they actually DON'T touch a single frame of the original film? Not even a little? It's true! I done looked it up." (George Lucas excepted, of course).

It's as though people think the filmmakers are going to go house to house, confiscating people's DVDs and replacing them with the rebooted version. <forehead slap>

A reboot of a film will only "ruin" the original if you let it.

In other words, derp.

sixshotsays...

The premise as to how Robocop is born is at least different. I liked the original Robocop back then. I ain't too sure as to how this'll pan out. It looks interesting, especially with the new ED-209 being flaunted for good measure. But I'll hold my opinions on the movie 'till I actually see it.

EvilDeathBeesays...

What do I get from this trailer?

PG-13 "death" scene. All he does is get blown up in a car, not the extremely violent and painful death of Alex Murphy from the original film goes through, the trigger in him remembering his previous life and becoming more than just an emotionless robot/cyborg. The trigger in this? His family. Yawn. They turn one of the most important scenes from the original into "boom". Also leads me to believe this'll be a PG-13 puss-fest.

Face time! The vanity of celebrities or producers that think they need to have the star's face plastered throughout the entire film (massive props for Karl Urban and the director of Dredd for sticking with the fact Dredd never shows his face). In the original, once he was RoboCop, you only ever see his face until the end. It was a good visual reminder to the audience that he was human, to reinforce that now he's reclaiming some of humanity.

It IS a powersuit. Rather than literally being a human brain in a robot as the original is, you see it's just a guy in a suit with a robot leg and arm (his bare hand and his "face in a helmet" looks ridiculous). Kinda weakens the human mind battling the robot programming aspect of the plot. Especially considering it seems he's all emo as soon as he wakes up "What have you done to me! WAH WAH!"

Where's the satire? Sure it may be hard to wedge in satirical aspects in a trailer, but I have a feeling there'll be none of it in this one. The tone is completely different and feels very generic.

Granted this is just a trailer, but it feels like this is nothing more than a generic action movie with the same name as an old beloved cult classic. I'm not against reboots, but if you plan to reboot something successful, two things need to be kept in tact: The tone and feel, and key aspects to the plot. I'd love to see more RoboCop, this isn't it.

I don't know. The original was a masterpiece. The satire and social commentary was inspired.

To expect that much again is probably asking too much. The very reason they're rebooting everything is because they are self-evidently out of ideas.

Interestingly, has anyone noticed how children's flicks are not endless reboots? I mean, there are the obligatory 2nd and 3rd versions of successful films, but in the past decade or so they've put out a lot of new stories. Not so for original films for adults.

I'd buy this comment for a dollar!

Feel the same way.

Why remake a classic that is even strangely (awesomely) apart of the Criterion Collection?

... they should just try to write original scripts... I know... it's really time consuming to do, requires real talent and they might not be guaranteed to make 300 million dollars at the box office if they did!

Deanosays...

I know I will hate this but I need to say this; Samuel L Jackson is horrendously overexposed. He's an ok actor when he's shouting but I don't think he's that great a supporting actor for these things.
Yet here he is again, probably not doing much and with half him mind on his golf clubs between takes.

JustSayingsays...

Well, if it turns out to be a smart film (not getting up my hopes here), we might get a man vs. machine / free will vs. programming story which would be nice and an acceptable change from Jesus identity crisis Verhoeven did. However, nowadays action movies tend to be less smart if not done by Nolan.
And while I can dig black Robocop, I don't like the suit like look. Dude just seems to wear a helmet, 80's Robocop's face was attached onto a robotic head. Rob Bottin FTW!

gwiz665says...

This is shit. I loved the original and this is just shit.

I so hoped it would not suck, I really did, but I would rather jack off strangers at the bus stop than sit through this.

chingalerasays...

Black RoboCop is black like his soul! (like the Black Peter Parker Spidey was)

Oh, and form the bulk of the comments here and we would also share the same sentiments, RoboCop was a singular event not unlike a comet strike or summer with a virgin, and this replication attempt should never have been allowed to manifest.

Two thumbs down, I think so!
Now......time to watch the piece of sheeeeitt!

mxxconsaid:

Black robocop is just bleh. (not a racist comment)

Paybacksays...

Why all the reboots?

1) Proven ($$$) storyline and characters
2) They own the rights to it, avoiding all the Copyright Trolls that own every other plot that might be interesting. (I hope to see Hugh Howey's Wool/Shift/Dust a.k.a. "Silo" series get around this.)
3) It's like a sequel, except they don't have to worry about #2 or "ruining" #1
