Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Public Defenders

"You have a right to an attorney."

YouTube: The Miranda warning includes the right to a public defender. It doesn’t include the fact that public defenders are highly overworked and grossly underpaid.

The details of that judge fighting the public defender when the public defender refused to settle for a speedy trial and actually wanted to defend his client: http://www.floridatoday.com/story/news/local/2015/03/30/panel-reviewing-evidence-in-brevard-courtroom-scuffle/70667488/ The judge was suspended for four weeks, but then reinstated. As of June 2, 2015 the case was being heard, I didn't follow the story deeper to see how it went from there...

The more I watch John Oliver's show, the more I think the US are a terrible, terrible place to live. He makes it sound like the richest 3rd world country on earth.

Thanks to almost 40 years of failed Republican policies, we basically are.

To be fair, IMO, many of those failed republican policies have been put in place by Democratic majorities and/or presidents. The policies do come from the right, but are not discarded or blocked by the 'left'. (by 'left' I mean those who identify themselves as 'left' or Democrat, because to my mind, few of them walk the walk...maybe Sanders and a few others, certainly not the Democrats as a party though. Not anymore.)

As the British would say, "Brilliant!". Conspiracy theories are usually pretty amusing, some people need to believe that the world works like an "Oceans 11" or "Mission: Impossible" movie, with all these elements working in perfect synchronization to pull off the perfect crime.

ChaosEnginesaid:

And on the off chance anyone actually believes that...

There is no right or left anymore. All that remains is rich or poor.

If you are rich, you are set. If you are poor, you are fucked. If you are halfway in-between, you pray from paycheck to paycheck that you either work your way up to rich or manage to cling onto where you are at for another month.

The idea that either party gives two shits about anyone who is not rich, is an illusion to give us hope that things can change.
