I think that ref just ended his career. He'll never ref another professional women's tennis match if the players have any say, and his private life will also change now, he should expect angry Serena fans to ruin any public activity he participates in for the foreseeable future.

I think a penalty of one point would be great for loud grunting while hitting the ball.

He gave her a point penalty for something it seems every other coach in the tournament had done without receiving so much as a warning, coaching from the stands, then gave her a full game penalty for being upset about it with less vitriol than others (men) who did not get penalized at all by the same judge for the same thing, telling him he will never judge another match they play.
Together that looks pretty biased against her.

On the flip side, it allowed Osaka to be the first ever Japanese player to win a singles final.

So what.. it was just one point... even if it was an unfair call. Unfair calls happen all the time... suck it up buttercup.

But noooo, not with this one... she lost her shit repeatedly and pushed her luck past the pale.

It was a pathetic display of entitlement.

I was supporting her up to the point where she started saying that other MEN were doing worse things and didn't get called, but she did because she's a woman. That was unjustified.
Also this rule of "no coaching" seems rather silly.

It would be unjustified if it's not true, but what I read was a man said the same things and worse to him earlier this summer in a more confrontational way with no penalty.

To be fair, it sure seemed the accusation that she was cheating was far more important and upsetting to her than the point and to me appeared to be what she was arguing about.

Unfortunately for her, her coach was interviewed right afterwards and admitted he was coaching/signaling her, so he was technically cheating. It's unclear if she was paying attention to his signals, so possibly she wasn't actually cheating herself.

She was being coached, she did smash her racket, she did run her mouth.

Not every instance of coaching gets caught. Unlucky or bad execution.

Most smashings of rackets are punished.

Do men really get away with that level of verbal abuse?
I believe she in fact got a lot of leeway because she is Serena, black and at home.

Preferably she should have gotten a sterner warning first to shut up or be hit with a game penalty.

She would be out of a basketball game, football game, golf tournament. In baseball and hockey she would be mocked for being a crybaby.

Men should not get away with this childish behaviour either.

Yep, mention games where players can't discuss calls with the referee at all, that makes a point well.

I don't know this was sexist, it seemed more personal to me. You're right, men shouldn't get away with this, but they do.

Many people drive fast, few get caught. No reason to complain. No coaching is a needlesly old-school rule and should be dropped IMHO.

Bernard Tomic once got called for coaching by his dad and thanked the umpire, presumably for shutting him up.

Serena has a history of verbal abuse and she is now famous for it just like McEnroe. I am glad she got called for it. There should be no place for that in any sport.

McEnroe was often punished for his antics.
