GOP's Little Rule Change They Hoped You Wouldn't Notice

This is how interested the House GOP is in opening the government . . .

YouTube Description:

Late in the evening on September 30, 2013, the House Rules Committee Republicans changed the Rules of the House so that the ONLY Member allowed to call up the Senate's clean CR for a vote was Majority Leader Eric Cantor or his designee -- all but guaranteeing the government would shut down a few hours later and would stay shut down. Previously, any Member would have had the right to bring the CR up for a vote. Democracy has been suspended in the House of Representatives.

I really need to learn more about politics. But if I'm understanding this correctly...this is extremely scary. The majority can change the rules to whatever benefits them the most? Sad.

That's basically how it's been done with gerrymandering for a while so it's not exactly new. Needs to be abolished, but the question then becomes, how do you draw district lines fairly. Of course this would be an easier question if there was no parties

The implication here though is that the Republicans PLANNED to shut the government down from the start.

Worse, they changed it BEFORE the government shutdown, ie, it was planned.

My understanding is that the same thing could be done to eliminate the filibuster in the senate; only a simple majority is needed to change the rules.

The difference is this rule seems to be designed to alleviate deadlock whereas the filibuster only creates it. I can see why repubs wanted to eliminate this one. Even when they're in charge they'll still be the party of nothing getting done.

Politics is all about messing with the rules to get your way.

The Democrats used shady tactics to get the Un-Affordable Care Act passed because they did not have enough votes. Now the Republicans and using shady tactics to help fend off Obama care. Oh how things go in full circles.

I can truly say you specifically deserve the government you have right now *ie not functioning. You managed to combine argument by vehemence, argument By repetition, and argument by emotive language in one neat little package.

Can't we have a discussion with actual facts and not buzz words that the media spouts?

My little 6 year old nephew does the same thing when he knows he is caught but isn't going to actually admit to anything.

That smug fucking smirk at the end fills me with rage. I'd like to smack his teeth right out of his god damn mouth.

It's America, what do you fucking expect? They keep us just educated enough to barely understand this bullshit and then they buzz word us until we don't know what the fuck we believe.

Although I am just your hat (Canadian here) I would expect the more enlightened trying their best to lift up those who are not using reasoned argument instead of fighting buzz words with buzz words.

Nothing killed me more when I was visiting your country than people in restaurants making jokes about "har har government shutdown everything is so much better now" instead of talking about the harsh reality of it.

But at least you guys still have free speech and honest politicians do not get gunned down in the street so there is still hope for non partisan politics.
