I don't understand - She killed herself, because she was duped by a crank call?

Although I think Crank calls are foolish once you are past the age of twelve, I really can't see why the DJs could be at fault here.

Why would she kill herself??

I think she was an ordinary member of the public, by her own words a "very shy person", who was made to look an incompetent fool in front of the worlds media, put in a position where she quite reasonably felt she had embarrassed the royal family, her employers and damaged the reputation of the hospital.

It sounds like the royals and hospital managers were understanding that it wasnt her fault but that probably came as no comfort in the night hours when she was wracked by guilt and shame.

When someone suicides its often difficult to see their problems as serious enough to die over but for the person in the middle of that turmoil thats the only way out.

While I dont think they bear any criminal responsibility for her death at the very least they shouldnt have done a prank like this for fear of getting some nurses fired.

I disagree. No one expected the prank to succeed in any matter. You can't go around afraid to do anything simply because someone might have a bad day over it. If you complain at a cafe that you got the wrong order, you may unsuspectingly cause the person who made the mistake to get fired. An innocent mistake can have consequences, but you can't go around second guessing everything. This was a simple prank that got out of hand with an unforeseeable and horrible outcome. No one's to blame

Also, no one would ever simply commit suicide over just this. There would have to have been other issues in her life and this was perhaps just the trigger.

But isn't that just a bad idea in general?

If it fails, then it's just a boring segment.

If it succeeds it likely gets someone fired and whatever else follows.

Seems like a lose/lose to me.

My point is that the possibility someone would get fired to be on the receiving end of a prank is so utterly remote it borders on absurdity and that not doing it for that single reason is just as absurd.

Same as if you spoke up for receiving the wrong order. The chance someone could fired over it is pretty damn remote, but it does exist. You can't go through life constantly second guessing all the little things you do when in all good judgement would lead to nothing bad happening, when there is an unpredictable chance, something bad MAY happen.

I think most prank calling is stupid, but almost always utterly harmless, as this prank would have been if they hadn't gotten the unfortunate circumstance of contacting someone with it seems, some serious emotion issues and if the story hadn't gotten the ludicrous amount of attention that it didn't warrant

But giving out a patients medical information is highly likely to result in a firing. This is vitally important to this issue, its not a restaurant order, its the private and confidential medical history of a person, a royal no less.

Well to a large extent I agree with you. You shouldn't not do something for fear of maybe someone getting their feelings hurt or whatever, that's like the Chilling Effect, but I would argue that in this particular instance there was nothing to be gained from it other than misery. What were they really hoping for? They're fucking morons is what they are.

What's to be gained from any prank call? It's only because the nurse killed herself that people's emotions are running high (not to make light of her death). If that never happened, would you still describe them as "fucking morons" (to me sounds like there's a bit of anger behind the statement) or simply think "that was stupid and unfunny" and not give it a second thought?

What I find most interesting is not the DJs (who are unfunny idiots) or the woman (while it's sad, she was also clearly unstable that something as trivial as this would drive her to suicide).

It's the public reaction. When I first noticed this story, it was mentioned in a fluff piece in online news and the public reaction was "haha, what an idiot to be fooled like that". Then news of her suicide came through and the focus switched to a witch hunt on the DJs.

I'm willing to bet large sums of money that the people baying for their blood are the very same people who laughed about it a few days ago.

This really shows how the royal family are treated as a protected species out of reach of public criticism or ridicule, & in some respects are also in many Australian media circles. i think that if this story shows anything it is the pressure placed upon citizens such as the nurse who would go on to take her own life to revere dutchesses, dukes, kings etc. as above the mere commoner, if entitlement wasn't placed on this birth then there would've been no prank call & the woman would not have felt as though she made a national mistake by not screening a simple phone call.

When a child's every move is scrutinised in utero and seen as of national importance, then how much has the media really changed since the time of Diana?.

Who the fuck are you say the nurse was "unstable"?

I think prank calls are stupid and people who do them are morons. I'm angry because of the outcome, which I'll admit the prankers could never predict. I'll still say, that the only outcome they could get would be bad, so why do that? There's no "awesome, I succeeded" in it, no good outcome.

Their joke was bad and they should feel bad.

Stupidity often has consequences. You think those tears were for the UK nurse or their careers? They'll forever be known as the Prank Suicide DJs. Ouch. Hard to live that one down.

ChaosEnginesays...

Are you trying to be funny?

She killed herself. That in and of itself is pretty much the definition of someone who is not mentally sound.

The fact that a prank call pushed her over the edge only adds to that. Plenty of people have suffered much worse tragedies in their lives and recovered from it.

I'm not trying to belittle her. I'm just sorry she didn't get the help she so clearly needed.
