Atheist Debaptism Ceremony

Well, what did you think it would be like?

As an atheist, and maybe im missing something but, I dont really appreciate what they're trying to do. Atheism in itself is not about organized ceremony but a divergence from it. I know it's a spoof but im worried that next, we'll have atheists demanding that other atheists be de-religion-ed in all other sorts of ways to conform. ;-/

What?

If i tell a joke about a pagan god, does that mean i'm becoming pagan?

Jigga raises a good point.

Atheism should ABSOLUTELY NOT be defined as a spoof or parody of the rights of organized religions.

That would make atheism the equivalent of a Ben Stiller film, when it should instead be the concrete baseline for scientific thought.

and.. uh...

I upvoted this for the little girl's comment. Yeah, that's it.

Ceremony itself is unrelated, an animal thing that would be sad to lose! (Don't elephants have ceremonies?) If someone wants to have an atheist ceremony more power to them, it doesn't mean they believe in fairy tales. Should wedding ceremonies be abandoned because just signing a page is enough? This ceremony is obviously a tongue in cheek parody. I think it's wrong, for the reasons retroboy brings up.

So you're saying we should avoid organized ceremony in order to conform to your view of what atheism should be?

^exactly...

each person can choose what they want to do. Just because a bunch of people picked up a hair dryer and a robe and said that we are doing a big ol' debaptism party doesn't undermine what others are doing e.g. Richard Dawkins. Fair enough if all of atheists just sit there making fun and making spoofs of organised religions - but, at least for me, I see many who take this topic seriously.

It's a breath of fresh air away from the doom and gloom and it was a laugh obviously for those attending and me watching.

People need to lighten up.
