Arrested For Asking A Policeman For His Badge Number

These two women are from a group called FIT Watch, who basically observe the Forward Intelligence Teams and document their activity, to hold them accountable for their actions, and prevent cover-ups of instances of police brutality.

Here, the police arrest them on false charges of obstruction and proceed to physically detain them with excessive force (they weren't resisting). The video timestamp is 8/8/2008

This kinda thing will happen in any country populated with people. The mistake many make is attributing such behavior specifically to police.

People are assholes. While that can't be completely prevented, it's nice to live in a country that allows for legal retribution.

yep.
as long as you have videotape, witnesses and a bank account that can fight this form of strong-arming.
what does one do if they dont have such luxuries?

Each police unit should have an independant judging body in these situations who has authority over the police and is knowledgeable about legal matters. Basically, each police unit needs a vulcan.

It's a pity that these things happen in the police force, but it seems to be the way psychology works with some people when they're granted power over others. Perhaps we shouldn't be angry at the police, but the system by which their rationality, personality and judgement is examined? Is there even such a thing in place?

Things like this don't happen in socialist countries!
It's a good thing the British citizens serfs turned in their firearms, so the government has nothing to fear.

Riiiight, because clearly this has everything to do with gun control and would never happen in automatic rifle totting, gun slinging America.

Awful. It's everywhere. Police everywhere are on a power trip. Sad.

I'm not entirely convinced that this sort of behaviour is on the rise, so much as awareness of it has. The ubiquity of cameras and Internet access is helping expose more criminal activity that was not as visible or recordable before.

Esoogsays...

Am I the only one on the other side of the fence here? First of all, YES, there was resistance. When asked to comply, one them being placed on the ground was fighting and struggling.

This "watchgroup" got exactly what they wanted. A reaction from the police, a response, and some publicity. There one goal in these situations is to generate public emotional response by doing anything they can, and that includes obstruction. Just let the people do their jobs.

Having said that...YES, I saw one case of excessive force when the officer was standing on the person's foot. That was unnecesary.

Police officers are not evil, sad people. PEOPLE are evil and sad. Some of them just happen to be police officers.

Haha I love how they stamp on your foot, then when you recoil away to stop the pain they deem that as resisting arrest so they can rough you up further.

I hope these women sued for as much as possible.

Dranzerksays...

Police should arrest people for posting one sided videos that dont' tell the whole truth imo.

We all remember the ambulance driver one, i called BS on that, while everyone was crying how bad cops are...turns out the cop was in the right.

These hags most likely had it coming. I love how they make it all seem so dramatic, looks like a simple arrest to me, and they were resisting.

jimnmssays...

According to this article, as of Feb. 2009, it's illegal to photograph the police in the UK.

So if a cop walks in front of his car's camera and photographs himself, is he breaking the law?

Unarmed population = serfs.

If the already-Orwellian British government decided tomorrow to cart loads of people off to reeducation camps, who could stop them?

Meanwhile...

Yes, yes.. you're an idiot, we all get it. Stop rubbing it in.

ShakaUVMsays...

Huh, weird, a group dedicated to exposing police brutality just happens to be victims of police brutality. And it's all on film!

Excuse me if I don't believe that this wasn't a setup on the part of FIT.

I have personal experience dealing with abusive power tripping cops, but this seems to be like they were provoking the cops until they got arrested so they could make this videoclip. Douches.

ponceleonsays...

To those that think "it isn't the whole story" or that it is a "setup."

Did you watch the video? Did you see at the end the part where they state clearly that all charges were dropped?

I'm thinking it is pretty legit. My own experiences with cops has been mixed, some have been great people, some are total asses like the folks in this video.

As for QM's comments about guns, it doesn't make any sense. How would guns have helped them in this situation? Are you advocating that you shoot a cop when they try to arrest you? *eyeroll

toastsays...

The guardian is a newspaper in the UK. I looks like they were reporting a story and from what I can gather, the camera was operated by one of the Forward Intelligence Teams so this may even be the footage provided by the police themselves.

Should they really have provoked the police if they did not actually want anything to happen in order to get home to the kids? Perhaps not, but it was their choice. They were not violent or obstructive, after all it was the police who approached them.

TURNS OUT THE COP WAS IN THE RIGHT?

You think you can just make some ridiculous comment with no supporting evidence because it's a few weeks later and get away with it? You just missed the point of the Sift by about 3 goddamn miles.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,526128,00.html

From Fox News, no less - the trooper's dash cam shows nothing significant beyond what the family member's film showed. The EMT offered to be arrested at the hospital just as was said in his victim's statement, which I linked in my sifting of that dustup.

Now, back to this video: Imagine how you would react if a person, uniformed or not, starts attempting to restrain you with no stated reason in the middle of a calm conversation. Oh, right, you'd lie there on the ground and take it peacefully because it's fine so long as someone with a badge is pushing your face into the dirt?

gorillamansays...

It doesn't go 'some people are assholes, some of them join the police force'. It goes 'some people are assholes, only assholes join the police force'.

Corrupt, fascist organisations don't recruit moral people.

Paybacksays...

They kinda lose my sympathy a tad when they lie about "not expecting to be detained".

That's EXACTLY what they wanted. Otherwise, they wouldn't have put the single mothers at the forefront. Like Sea Sheppard, arresting mothers = good news.

ShakaUVMsays...

If you want to get arrested by the police, it's pretty easy.

So yeah, I do believe it's a setup. It's a group dedicated to exposing police brutality that nobody has ever heard of. How better to get yourself in the news than to get arrested yourself?

I'm sorry, but it's like companies running commercials by "real customers" who all just happen to love their product. Isn't it weird how that happens?

I'm sorry, but while, hell, there may have been police brutality, the source of this video costs it all credibility.
