What motivates you to submit a video to VideoSift?

Finding, submitting, titling, tagging and describing a video submission takes time and effort, but everybody here does it often. What motivates us and how do we choose which videos are worthy to submit?

I have some ideas and would like to hear your comments on any of these or any others you have:

* Even though these are not self-created videos, the act of submitting them here represents at the very least active reception of media, as opposed to the notion of the passive couch potato. Have you ever considered the degree to which posting found videos is itself a creative activity? If it is, what are you creating here?

* Do you consciously try to submit top-15 titles and/or to amass as many star points as possible? Is there a gaming aspect at work here?

* Do you enjoy calling attention to obscure videos just because you think they deserve more exposure?

* Do you look for videos that complement the selection of videos you have already submitted? I.e., do you establish one or more themes for your VideoSift persona?

* Do you consciously try to establish an online identity or personality connected with your selection of videos? Do you think this identity resembles yourself in real life?

(Please note that responses to this topic may be used in a term paper I am writing about "voting community" sites as a new type of medium for communication and self-expression. I will discuss the basic genre, but will be focusing on VideSift because it is my favorite. See my profile text for more.)

It's pretty much pointless to submit conservative videos of any kind. Videosift is a microcosm of the liberal media, they all have their own favorites, and you're screwed if you're not one of the popular people. You could say community participation is frowned upon; the majority roves around like a gang that needs strength in numbers, because on their own they can't handle themselves. Thankfully, like in real life, there are a couple of beacons to take on Videosift sheep.

Some days its cats, some days its music, some days its reality. It depends on the tone of the day. I think a persons uploading habits are best described by the videos they kill or discard, or even the personal queue.

I get to show people something they might not have seen otherwise. I also get a direct reward in the form of star points and power points.

The Art of Sifting is that you get to "create" the framing of the video, you make the title, the tags and so on, this all has a direct influence on how a given thing sifts. Something can be hilarious, but if the title is bad, our nano-second attention spans flicker over it and miss the gem.

I suppose there is an underlying theme to what is sifted, but I don't think it's a persona as such. For some I presume the avatar is completely different than themselves, but my avatar is just a thin coat of veneer on myself. I'm pretty close to what I represent myself as here, and I think it's intellectually dishonest (not to mention douchebaggely) to do otherwise.

I do enjoy calling attention to obscure videos, but only if I like them. There are plenty of obscure stuff that I don't give two shits about.

CP420 and the rest of the conservative beacons call this place a liberal haven of atheists, but I don't see it that way. I think the IQ on this website exceeds most any other website, and that is the reason we are liberal and atheists; it's what smart people think. Stick that in your gun and shoot it.

Do you want a general rant or separate answers for each thought/idea in the original post? Im gonna go with answering them separately (maybe it would be easier to number them?)

1. I am not actively thinking of what I create here, no. I have no aspirations of building a piece of art with my submits, if they just amuse or teach or fascinate someone thats enough.

2. For me there is a definite gaming aspect, I like the feeling of having a video I posted end up in the top-15 and/or pleasing people enough to leave comments and upvotes. Makes me feel like a good little ant who done his job. Without the star system Im doubtful I would make as many submits, the community feeling would have to take on a bigger role then. But I think through the times Ive spent in online gaming its fair to say it starts out as just building up some kind of score and then goes more and more into the social part as challenges are overcome and goals are reached.

3. I dont really care if a video is obscure or not, I just want to share stuff that made me react (happiness, anger, disbelief, astonishment, fascination), so No.

4. Not really, no

Wow, haha, did I fail the test of having some ulterior, worthy motive to being here? MONEEEEEY, hahahaha. No, but I do feel for the community, or at leasts the parts/people/situations I can understand.

1. I like to think I make the internets a better place by submiting quality videos (because everyone needs an excuse for wasting all that time on one site)
2. sometimes I do fall for that "who'll submit this digg-ed video first" frenzy. it's that feeling you get when you beat Zifnab to the ZPR embed... not that I ever did, but it's the best example of what I'm trying to say. especially in the beginning when climbing the vs hierarchy was still fun (cause with each step you got new *toys, of course). but often it's not even intentional. I just happen to spend a lot of time browsing different video aggregators but I never post videos only because they're popular and I know they might get a lot of votes.
3. I post videos on topics I feel are not represented enough on the sift and/or stuff I like but nobody else seems to appreciate.
4. yes, I do. my themes are:
- flying (also an almost childish fascination with jet fighters)
- jazz musicians I really like
- good slovenian music
- other stuff that originates from my local background, geographicaly or otherwise; anything from music, cinema, arts to interesting sights... also a lot of Slavoj Žižek
5. not intentionaly. but then, maybe my videos do describe me better than my balkan english ever could (I feel awkward using english, that's why I usualy keep my comments short:)

Even though I'm not obsessive with the meta-game of sifting videos and getting votes it can at times prove compulsive to see something you've found strike a chord with others.
I was very happy with my recent cuttlefish video that I found in a couple of clicks after searching for "flamboyant" on YouTube. That was complete luck.

I see videos mentioned on other sites, in RSS feeds etc and if I like them then I check for a submission on Videosift.

I don't like to submit anything that's humiliating, has violence or is simply to dumb. I have to admit I don't like to be associated with trivial videos - in that sense I suppose I am making a statement about myself. Even if something stood to earn lots of votes I'd pass if it made me feel uncomfortable. And I don't believe I've resorted to a cat video - yet.

I'm quite proud of the Bravo channel that I founded when I got Gold 100. Yes, you could get a channel at that point but that was many moons ago. I've done a few general searches but I've yet to see another site that has a similarly nice collection of quality classical music videos.

YouTube has a millions things on it including most classical content but part of the problem is it's content organisation, quality levels and community. Videosift really lives up to its name in bringing the best videos to the fore.

I do enjoy it when people genuinely like what I've posted - I get more of a buzz out of that than having a high rank. Getting lesser known videos posted is satisfying especially as the classical stuff isn't exactly populist material.

Farhad2000 says...

Reality has a liberal bias.

I actually mostly submit for myself, I like the video and I want an archive of it. On another level I do want exposure for what I like. But essentially the videos I watch most are my own. Occasionally I will find something really great someone else has submitted.

What motivates me to submit? hmm...

I never really thought about it... I suppose if I had one reason, it is to be noticed... For the longest time, I have always been in the background on sites, never really doing anything, but with videosift, I am not only getting noticed, but I am also doing something on the site too...

Being #46 on the site is also rather nice, but I would like it more if I was a bit higher on the list (top 30 if anything...)

lol..

Some of us submit good videos that are entertaining or of some quality or at least unique and interesting.

Other people just submit the same stuff ad naseaum. (See: GI JOE PSA from years ago) (See: endless parade of kitty doggie videos)

Some people try to be the first to submit regular type series that are the kind on the top10 of digg and most of the internet (See: Zero Punctuation) (see: chad vader)

Some people just like their own unique tastes to be posted everywhere, this is usually certain types of music videos.

A lot of the top people just see a video from whatever means the use to aggregate videos and recognize those destined for top honors and submit those.

A better question is where do people cull videos from the internet from. Most people do not watch 1000s of newly submitted 10 view YT videos, so there is already some major sifting before they get submitted to aggregation sifting/voting sites like this one.

Occasionally, people will just try to fill out a niche that is otherwise ignored on the internet, like cooking videos or horrorshow videos back when a contest is run or halloween time. This site is unique in that there are not really hard core channel fans, like a video gaming forum might see only those videos, etc.

Anyways, this site started with a certain relatively small group of users and the types of videos that others like were reinforced, so people that enjoyed that blend of videos came back because it was useful for delivering certain content. Eventually those that value the content make an account and add their own, usually somewhat similar tastes, or if it was not it would be ignored.

This site is really not that much different than the digg top10 list, but it does have to opportunity to provide more unique finds. There used to be great japanese and korean content, which has mostly died down, partly because of the massive YT purges of jtv content. Same goes with adultswim content that was once submitted, but pretty much useless now because those videos will soon be dead, so copyright holders can actually stifle the distrubution to larger audiences.. dee doo doo

For instance, for awhile it was all Colbert stuff, but that died off either as a fad, or the YT embed being killed by copyright holders, and then the annoying US only ability to play Comedy Central embeds. So much content is ignored from corporations trying to control their content.

I think in general the answer you are looking for from at least this collective of users if providing a place to be able to quickly and effortlessly watch good videos and avoid a bunch of useless crap. In some ways I think people submit videos to return the favor and keep the house of cards afloat, so there is a communal aspect to it, and many of the videos are a you-have-to-see-this. For the record, this site is not that much different than a fark submission, or at least the early days on this site had that appeal, but fark is a also almost a decade past jumping the shark.

You should visit GodTube as another concept of the secluded pockets of the internets where it used to be fun sport to submit some classic godtube content.

So conservative Christians are just stupid huh?
So much for the "love everyone" policies that liberals claim to have.

I like bringing something that I think is new.

I get kind of excited when I stumble upon something that I've never seen here before.

But this place has some real power sifters, and quite a few times the things I wanted to post were already posted.

I thought that too when I first got here, but now I am almost positive the primary difference between the users of this site and youtube is the median age. If you were to take an honest survey, I bet the results would be Gaussian just like youtube.
