VideoSift 2.2 - Channels!

Yay! I think people have been asking for these since day 0. I know there are probably more that we would like, but we envision adding more channels in a second round. As usual, thanks go to Lucky for the code behind this, and a special thanks to Ren for creating our Sifter logo in all its varieties.

With the launch of channels, we are also adding a slew of invocations that will allow you to classify or unclassify videos. Check the menu to the right ->

Channels are as follows

cute.videosift.com

comedy.videosift.com

geek.videosift.com

music.videosift.com

politics.videosift.com

Channels are not exclusive - a video may fall into multiple, or even all channels. A kitty denouncing Bush through song, while holding an iPod comes to mind.

Christmas comes early!

How about an invocation to remove from a single channel? Don't want to have to hit nochannel, then re-channel to several other places, eh?

Is there a way to tell which channel a vid is already in?

James Roe says...

should probably also mention that if you flip over to a channel and then go to the queue, you will be browsing that channels queue only. Currently the channel you are on follows you over to siftalk. We will probably change it so that it just kicks you out of the channel.

Any comments on how you guys want to handle this would be seriously taken to heart.

Krupo says...

Well I just wandered into another user's profile while in cute.VS. All the user's vids appeared. I think the easy solution (and to avoid Oprah pumping gas showing up in cute.VS) is to revert a click to that area to the main videosift...

That was actually intentional since it just seems more logical when viewing member-specific data that it's more desireable for the user to see everything associated with her. The main thing is that the:
<b>front, classic, queue, new user queue, top videos, and recent comments</b>
pages all show only videos in the current channel. Also notable is that if you click a video in the "top 15" list, it will take you to the main site for viewing since each of those may be in any given category.

This is going to rock!

Videosift 2.2 is looking good. I’ll just quote a former boss concerning the title portion of the channel pages. “It looks horsey.” The translation is that the type is awfully big for the banner space. There’s a nice sense of white space everywhere else but there.

I might be the sole voice of dissent here, but so far I'm not impressed. It seems that sifters are giving random, nonsensical channel assignments to some videos- for instance a the Zombie Movie and Cockroach spray vids that were assigned to "Politics". As well, the extra text seems like shoddy design work- makes the slick 2.x interface look cluttered and busy.

My 0.02.

There's always a bit of commotion when a new feature comes in and is being defined by the community, blankman - I think that channels will settle down soon.

As for the text, I think you are in line with dotdude. We will try and bring it down a few notches.

joedirt says...

I tell you.. I'm pretty impressed with whatever metric you used to assign default categories (rather than leaving them all blank and requiring all new videos to be tagged). You click on cute and 90% are indeed correct, even without a 'cute' tag.

I would like the top15 for each category. I'm kind disappointed that you can't see the top15 for that category. I guess I can ignore the top15 issue since the tab for Top Videos is indeed category specific, which is very nice.

(FYI, this may be a problem, may not be, but music. category applies the filter to new member queue also)

One other comment, I wish there was a way to go back to main VS site easily on top banner. Maybe the blue text VideoSift.com can take you to main www. site?

joedirt says...

Question for lucky, when you edit the tags, will this also check to update category? Since siftbot is currently leaving a message, I imagine this is possible. Might be easier than content spam with a whole lot of *whatevers.

ren says...

Nice work on the categories, keep up the good work.

One thing I might mention is it looks like the vertical and horizontal scaling changes between most of the sifter images. If needed I can retouch the originals to make them easier to fit in the same space?

cheers

joedirt says...

Another question. Is there future plans to allow profiles to select which categories to display in www. (ie. I can un-select nsfw and music, and never see anymore music videos or adult vids)

That would be great ren - The problem we were having was getting the accents sharp enough in the smaller sizes to be recognizable. If you'd like to have at that - much appreciated.

ren says...

ill have at that like its act like a pirate day. Also I'll provide them at the actual pixel size you are using so you wont have to rescale them.

Another thing about the title that i thought might look ok is to remove the ".com" at the end?
and maybe go with music@videosift or music.videosift something like that so it doesn't stretch so far and look so overpowering.

mmm i smell dinner!@

joedirt says...

Hmm.. I'm torn on editting channels. I would think they could be tags, and you could just edit the tag. (But then again, we have a serious tag character limit for some reason).

One problem is if a video has three categories, but say it shouldn't be music. Do you nochannel it and then add the other tags back on?
What about an undocumented feature for *nocomedy, *nomusic to toggle categories.

We will be letting gold star members edit channels they way they can edit tags now. However, like all things in life this feature is worth waiting for ;-)

therealblankman: "It seems that sifters are giving random, nonsensical channel assignments"

There is a very important point that hasn't been mentioned and is clearly being misunderstood. The channels were automatically populated based on title/tag text for all retroactive videos for the grand opening, but that is not going to be the case from now on. When you submit a video, it is your responsibility to check the channels that apply to it. If you check too many, the 'nochannel' invocation may be called by a Gold Star and you'll be emailed so you know to fix it. If you check too few, a Gold Star can add specific channels to a video.

There will definitely be videos in the channels that do not fit in the channel, especially as a result of this initial automatic assignment, because we cannot guarantee valid results when selecting videos based only on text. If you come across such a video (as you mentioned you did) and you surely will in the future, go ahead and 'nochannel' it. The author will be notified, so she can go back and fix it.

joedirt:
"I would like the top15 for each category."

Dag- what do you think about that? Should the Top 15 remain for the entire site or be channel-specific?
As you said, dirtyjoe, there is always the "Top Videos" tab.

"FYI, this may be a problem, may not be, but music. category applies the filter to new member queue also"
That was actually intentional. What do you all think? Is that how it should be or should we see all new member queue videos regardless of channel?

"Question for lucky, when you edit the tags, will this also check to update category?"
See above comment to therealblankman. To reiterate, there will be no automatic channel assignments. They must be added by the author using the submit/edit form or by a Gold Star using invocations.

"What about an undocumented feature for *nocomedy, *nomusic to toggle categories."
This was suggested, but elected to stick with only the 'nochannel' invocation. I like it, but perhaps it's better in the end to force the author to fix them manually.

Dag- What do you think about this?

dag: "Yes! channel filters are coming - right Lucky?"
That feature will be coming up, but it'll be a little while before it's implemented. Doggone real life work insists on demanding too much of my attention. Sorry for the delay.

joedirt says...

lucky, I still think certain tags should auto-assign category. Like music, music video, funny, comedy, politics. I think it saves time and effort to do this. Rather than nochannel and hoping the author edits the vid, or adding back in 'comedy' and 'politics' you could just make sure the tags are correct. Oh,well I guess they can just check the correct checkboxes.

Good job on auto-assigning existing vids.

lucky760 says...

I understand your point completely, however, I personally think it's best to leave it to submitters because when doing it automatically, no matter how unique you think the term might be, assigning channels just based on the presence of a word is bound to fail. E.g., "music" could be used in the title "Music to My Ears" in a news story video, "funny" could be in "We Live in a Funny World" in a political video, etc.

I truly don't feel it's too much of a burden for the author to tick a box or two, especially since they have watched the video they're submitting (presumably) and they know exactly what channels it might belong in, and one would have to go out of their way to avoid the checkboxes since they are right there staring them in the face when posting.

If we continue "auto-channeling," we will forever be having to find and correct videos that are sent to incorrect channels. As it is now, those we "need" to fix are restricted to only a small subset of those already auto-assigned. It just doesn't seem worth the effort when checking the boxes is so easy and fool-proof (watch a fool prove me wrong).

Feature Request

For videos that are part of a playlist, could that playlist be listed to the right of the video within it's own VS page (you know where the comments can be seen).

This would encourage exploration of the Sift via User list. Always a good thing.
