Melbourne Siftup (with Dag): This Saturday!

Hi All,

A little while back I posted about an upcoming Melbourne Siftup

Well, the date is now chosen: Saturday, 12th November.

Meeting at 4pm at 20 Meyers Place, followed by dinner at a place of everyone's choosing (although there is a pretty darn spiffy Argentinian restaurant that's opened up next door to 20 Meyers just a week ago... just sayin')

Those who will be in attendance are myself, @kymbos, @dag, @persephone, @oritteropo and others are possible rope-ins also.

Who wouldn't love to come and discuss the Secrets of the Sift with its illustrious founder, ask persephone what he is really like, and sample the fine cuisine and drinking that Melbourne has to offer?

Right as I'm leaving to move to NZ! Damn you!

Bugger indeed!

It's looking like it's going to be on Saturday the 12th of November, and with maybe some others coming, so looking good.

I'll try to *promote this up, but I don't think I've got enough power points

spoco2 says...

Ok, another shoutout to those so far involved and times...

We have @kymbos who has issues with the weekend of 12th and 13th of Nov

We have me, where I can't make the evening of the 19th, but could conceivably do the day, or we could do a day meeting on the Sunday, 20th? I can't lock down dates perfectly as yet as my wife will be getting schedules for her work which include weekend days... but we don't know them as yet.

We have @oritteropo who can't do the 19th either, but says the rest of the month looks ok.

And then we have @dag & @persephone who I think are ok for most any time in November.

So... yeah, these things are hard to organise, at least when they aren't just a quick pop out during a lunch break sort of meeting!

spoco2 says...

*promote this as we are about to enter October.

@kymbos has stated that he is now good for the weekend of the 12th/13th of November, which I believe is good for @oritteropo and @dag and @persephone, and it is for I also.

So I think we might be on a winner with Saturday the 12th of November. There was mention earlier by @kymbos that he has family ties with Gingerboy which looks like a nice place to spend at least some of the Sift Up at.

What things would Dag and Persephone like to see/do while in Melbourne, and are any of those things appropriate to incorporate into the Sift up?

spoco2 says...

As the date approaches, I think we've got things pretty much sorted...

Those in attendence:
@dag, @persephone, @kymbos and myself. With possibles @oritteropo and @Kofi.

Meeting at 4pm.... somewhere around the city for drinks and casual chatting while the group coalesces, followed by dinner somewhere, most likely GingerBoy.

If anyone has a preference of drinking establishment for the 4pm meeting, please put forth your choice, as I am by no means someone who really knows the best places to chill around this fair city of ours.

spoco2 says...

>> ^dag:

I'm there with bells on. Seriously I'm wearing bells.

Make you easy to spot, erm... hear then.

Although really, you're the only one from this group that any of us knows what they look like.

Unless of course I really do have a dog head, in which case you might now be reconsidering this Sift Up.

And I've made an executive decision about which bar we shall meet at, it shall be 20 Meyers Place, from the list given by @kymbos, because it is open at 4pm on Sat, and also because, well, I walk past it every day on my way to getting a coffee, it's right around the corner from work.

From there, the world of eats is our oyster, so we'll let that be a bit fluid... besides, we will have been able to have snacks while we drink at Meyer's Place anyway.

So, that's settled. I'll just go and update the initial post of this to reflect these revelations

spoco2 says...

>> ^dag:

@persephone and I will be at the Crowne Plaza. Is that far?

@dag, Not really, it's either about a 15minute leisurely walk, or a quick tram ride up the street.

@kymbos, I do like the idea of roof top places or those with gardens, and Madam Brussels is ridiculously close to Meyer's Place... it's just that
a) The weather is not looking to be nice and sunny, so rooftops might be a bummer
&
b) Being down at street level I think makes it easier to spot the fellow sifters.

Now, being that @dag and @persephone will be down Southbank way, we could make the meeting point be closer to that area, but I think that runs the risk of the whole thing remaining around the Crown complex, which doesn't really show off Melbourne that well.

What we need is a way of people knowing our movements as the Sift Up progresses. I'll say it here and at the top of the post, if anyone wants my mobile number so they can track us down on the night, then I can do that.

Or, I guess... being that dag tweets, people could follow that? I've never used Twitter in my life, so I can't speak for how well that would work.

Would that make more sense though?

kymbos says...

Saturday's going to be 23 and a possible shower, with fine days either side - come on, that's prime rooftop material for 4pm.

I'm obviously not fussed as I can't make it till later, but I reckon with your combo of tweets and updates to this page, you can swing the flexibility of rooftop with Meyers Place as a backup.

Do it. Do it.

Let's play it by ear. We can meet at 20 Meyers Place and decide then. I'll update this post for late arrivers so people will always know where we're at. You can also email me at "brianh [squiggly symbol] videosift.com"

spoco2 says...

@kymbos, I do love the idea of the rooftop places, and as @dag said, we may well move to one. But most don't open until after 4pm. Meyer's place opens at 4, so we have a place to start from, and then can move on through the city as places open up

We'll find our way to great places I'm sure. I wish you were coming earlier as you certainly seem to know the bars around the city much better than I... although to be fair I think there are alley cats that know more about the bars in Melbourne than me.

kymbos says...

Yep, it's all looking good. Saturday's now looking 25 and mostly sunny - loving it.

Melbourne is our oyster. I have had a bit of a check, and most rooftop bars open around midday on Saturday.

As I said, I'm looking like 8pm and will contact Dag to find your whereabouts. If you do head to the rooftops, Mme Brussels and the Carlton Hotel are pretty close by Meyers Place. Brussels is a bit more showy and expensive than the Carlton, which is more of a 'beer on tap' kind of place. The rooftop bar on Swanston St is further away, but has a spectacular view.

If you are keen to eat before I get there, no worries - I'll meet you for drinks afters.

spoco2 says...

@kymbos I'm sure we'll be able to hold off on the major eating until you arrive... hell, this was all your idea in the first place, can't have you miss the main event

And yeah, that's great news in regards to the weather, should be a great afternoon/evening.

Looks like this meeting is about to get underway. Darn, I was going to be there, but I forgot about the time difference and now I won't get there in time.

Have fun in meatspace you pillars of Sift!

Lane's edge was really nice. Recommended. We stayed for quite a while, then caught the city circle tourist tram around to Flinders St station, effectively the entire loop. I thought I'd been on the tourist tram before, but, ah, maybe not. I think I've mostly done the 10% we missed

At that point we caught up with @kymbos, and went... er... somewhere. On a rooftop. After that we went... er... somewhere else. I hope the others have a better idea of where we were, or the reports will make dull reading After leaving the really nice restaurant (it was getting late for me, so I excused myself and left early) I circled around until I worked out where I was and caught a train home.

I do have one or two blurry photos, but am desperately hoping the others have done better I'm also rather unclear as to how one posts a photo in a post.

I had a lot of fun, and really enjoyed meeting @dag, @persephone, @spoco2, and @kymbos

The sitftup was excellent. Funny enough I ended up naked and lost in a well jungled area surrounding Melbourne, I can surf the web from my phone so I know there is cell service within a few miles, but I cant see any city lights.

Stay calm, and if you get thirsty you can drink your own pee.

Yes, the jungles of outer Melbourne are pretty rough. >> ^deathcow:
