Just saw 'District 9', and the verdict is...

...Very good. I don't believe in lengthy reviews, mainly because they often give away too many plot points, so I'll just say a few things. The special effects were good, but they didn't overshadow the story. Plenty of action. It is somewhat gory, so don't see it with someone if they're squeamish about bloody scenes. And the story? Well, considering how savage we are with each other, I can completely see human beings behaving in the way they're portrayed in the film.

It's a dark film, if you couldn't pick that up from the trailers, so don't expect a typical Hollywood ending like in 'E.T.' or 'Cocoon'. If it had one like either of those films I wouldn't be giving it a positive review. Now don't get me wrong. I enjoyed both 'E.T.' and 'Cocoon', but those were "cute" scifi movies, and for the "cute" scifi genre they satisfied. But 'District 9' ain't no 'E.T.', even though it did have a couple of touching moments.

So I recommend it. So does RottenTomatoes, and as of this moment the film stands at 88% on the Tomatometer. Pretty impressive. Definitely worth the price of admission.

Now let's get back to treating each other like shit, so that when aliens come we can focus all that hostility on them. Do it for the species.

Yeah, this movie was definitely well worth the time. It gets you pretty wrapped up in some of the prosthetics and special effects. Even the CGI, while not exactly sparse, was actually only used where it was impossible to have an object or creature in real life. It's even got a pretty original view point on the whole "ZOMG, alium!" genre.

Bonus creepiness: The theater I was in, no one made a sound the whole movie(not even a cough), no one got up to go to the bathroom, no one said a word till we all could see daylight. It was outright trippy. Super happy I got to see this movie.

District 9 was originally supposed to be Halo, but that fell apart. It's good that Peter Jackson and Neill Blommkamp have still managed to create something great.

That's a little misleading. They were originally in talks to make Halo, yes. When that fell apart, Fox offered them a different project. It's not like they transformed Halo into D9.

MONDAY..im going to see D9 on monday!
woohoo!
so im avoiding this thread entirely until after, cuz i know someone is gonna throw a plot wrench in my soon-to-be-joyful state of movie watching.

I just saw it, thought it was a very worthwhile movie. The CGI was amazing in its subtlety and near perfection. I'm talking about the suit, mainly. You could really see a lot of his early short in that- the restraint that he used, earthy tones and dingy metal. Kind of the anti-Transformers.

It was good, but very hard for me to watch.. I have to admit, I cried because I just got overwhelmed. Poor NetRunner had to check on me every now and then to see if I was OK. This isn't one I am going to want to rewatch once it comes out on DVD. Humans can be such bastards.

It did leave me with tons of questions though, plotwise. And there is stuff in the trailers thats not in the actual movie. I checking it out on WikiPedia after seeing in, and reading about the original short story cleared up some things

Saw it today, it was a fun romp. Faster paced then I was expecting, and great acting from a cast of unknowns. There's a certain FPS like feel to the action scenes once the big weapons come out. Def recommend it.

Oh and cheers to it being a REAL action movie.. rated R and all.

Raptor riding Jesus feels this movie is heresy. Everyone knows that Earth is the only planet with intelligent design and even if there are aliens, they are clearly from the devil because they don't know raptop riding jesus.

Saw it Sunday. Very good. Thought it was going to be more of a mind-blower, but it turned out to be like Children of Men... very serious and well thought-out sci-fi setting, awesome filming. But still an action movie at the core.

RedSky says...

Reminded me of Children of Men too, except that was muuuuchhh better.

Sure the plot was novel but beyond the literal commentary at the start and some references to the dark aspects of human nature early on, it was really just a standard action movie through and through.

The director definitely shows promise though, I can't wait to see what he can do with a couple of good movies under his belt and a bigger budget.
