Hobbling Abusive Users

After recent events and the many suggestions about how to stop privileged users from repeatedly abusing their powers before an admin has the chance, we've added the method described repeatedly by several users.

Member accounts can now be hobbled to prevent the misuse of star powers by privileged accounts. What happens to a hobbled member is they can not:
  1. post private profile comments
  2. down vote comments
  3. down vote videos
  4. execute any comment invocations (they will simply be completely ignored by siftbot)
  5. Edit their posts or comments
Diamond members have the ability to hobble a member by using the new "hobble" icon () on a starred (and above) member's profile.

Additionally, whenever a new Siftquisition is started, the accused member's account is automatically hobbled. This is so they can be stopped immediately if they're in the middle of an assault on the site.

The only way for the handcuffs to be removed is for an admin to do so manually.

If hobbles are abused, they could be utterly disastrous. But I think that they can work. Can the original hobbler remove the hobble, or is it only the admins who can remove them?

This is a great idea. The worst thing that can happen is that nothing happens - emergency lockdown.

I've been contemplating handcuffing nicolebee for a while, this enables me to do just that.

do you guys think that 100000 more rules and invocations will fix things? or just 1000? How many? You see my point?

I thought you'd left?

I see your point but if it sucks then we'll soon see. I thought the new promote system didn't work and we got rid of that.

This is an interesting development as basically all the Diamonds are now partial moderators. Would it be worthwhile exploring the possibility of having users who are actually moderators instead of doling out this sort of power to alot of users some of whom won't use it?

[edit] I have no interest in being a moderator. It took me a while just to invoke dupeof.

Mink, I hate tons of rules too really. But given a choice between temp hobbling or killing an account, I'll take hobbling any day.

What I'm seeing here is an admin trying to help keep rabble rousing in line without completely writing someone off, and I like that.

In this case, nothing new is being added to the current rules. It is simply another tool to deal with abuse. There is advantage in having tools able to deal with different degrees of abuse or any other situation. This tool is not so much about fixing; more about preventing without having to deal with extremes such as permabanning or not being able to do anything until an admin is present. Besides it is not like this would have to be used often.

We should also mention that it's probably not for use on probation accounts- they can be instabanned in their profile or banned in a post - if they have broken the rules.

Yes, and to be even more specific, hobbling only works on starred accounts.

BTW if you're hobbling someone why should they retain the power to upvote videos/comments? Should not that privilege also be suspended if you're not playing nice?

Presumably you can't hurt the sift as badly that way.

Can we hobble the laywers of the world that are REALLY hurting the sift?

[goes back to deadpool drudgery... grumble grumble]

rougy says...

Just try to make sure that they're actually being abusive.

There is a difference between being abusive and having a disagreement, or a falling out of favor, with another user, especially if that user happens to be "connected" so to speak.

It's a strange development that seems to veer away from the current mission statement of empowering community based administration. Instead, this reinforces individuals having de facto authority over other privileged members. I don't think there's really any problem with it .. it just seems weird. You are trying to get away from having to do administrative decisions that put your voice above the community .. but you've set yourselves up as the only authority to remove "hobbling".

And "hobbling" is just fucking awful. Why don't you just call it "beheading"?
Maybe "handcuffed" or "arrested" or .. anything other than maiming somone.

The effects hobbling creates is a must for any member in siftquisition though. That should definitely stay.

blankfist says...

Oh? That icon is supposed to be handcuffs? At first glance I thought it may be a picture of a stumpy gray penis.

So, only star accounts can be hobbled? What if I go about fucking shit up? No one can hobble me? Well, I think I just received an open ticket!

ObsidianStorm says...

I like *Hogtied myself...

Maybe I'm missing it (if so, please point it out so I can go into spectator mode...), but is there really that much "abuse" on the Sift?

If we're really talking about ABUSE (some examples may be of use) then I see no problem with it. I might suggest that a time limit be placed on it so that members would come back, revisit the issue and assess whether this practice is really achieving what it is meant to achieve...

^What does "connected" mean - are you implying there is a Sift Mafia?

I mean that some members are obviously more important than others, they have more sway and are more "connected" with what happens here.

I trust the Sift to do the right thing, because over all it is a pretty tolerant community.

I guess I was just trying to make the point that a feud may erupt between two members, one with seniority and one without, and I guess I would just like the lesser member to get a fair shake.

Sometimes all it takes is to touch base with someone and talk to them; not always, I know, but sometimes.

EDD says...

As a precaution I guess a backfiring mechanism for this bdsm business couldn't hurt either - say, if gwiz hobbles me on the (unfounded and unfair) basis that I wouldn't want to continue to be his bitch anymore, he is to be circumcized (say, 5% of his star points may be removed). Or do we trust our diamond overlords completely?
