Anonymous Outs Amanda Todd's Bully - Siftable? *discuss

Anonymous has determined and exposed to the world the true identity of the main online tormentor Amanda Todd, a Canadian teen who killed herself when the bullying got too much for her to handle. I was going to sift it because I love it, it's newsworthy and would probably spark a discussion. But if I saw it sifted, I'd tag it with *discussion to determine if the Sift thought it was appropriate to post incriminations of unconvicted people.

So?

Very funny, very ironic. funniest because it's true. It was designed to threaten. Anonymous knows this though, and don't play within the rules. I'm sure they've got a plan for keeping this live. While I don't believe in vigilante justice, I also believe that if you do something bad to someone, you waive the right to expect others not to do that same bad thing to you, at least not until you show sincere contrition.>> ^BoneRemake:

I find thid message extremely funny.
Ironic in a sense ?

Tough call.
One side of me says, Bullying this gut into ruin is no better that what has happened to Amanda.

The other om me says This Pedophile who destroyed not only a person's life, he knowingly preyed upon a minor whom he knew couldn't fight back physically or mentally should reap what he has sown.
This was not some petty bullying. This was a 30 year old adult blackmailing a minor for sexual purposes, destroying the life she had and subsequently, every life she had as she tried to rebuild until the awful day when she finally cracked and killed herself.

Plus he kept an online "jailbait folder of all the teens he had accumulated photos from.

Yeah, I have issue with this.

Basically you're saying that this person deserves no trial, is found guilty by a clandestine group who assure people they've got proof that it's really the person. Where's the proof it's the person that did any of this?

Surely this proof should be brought before a court and the evidence looked at.

I'm going to invoke the 'slippery slope' argument here.

If you start letting 'Anonymous' decide who is guilty, and let them mete out the punishment as they deem appropriate, well, don't then start crying when they make a mistake, and accidentally identify the wrong person, or take their 'justice' too far and kill someone.

It's not the way to handle this. Person gets bullied to death, so they think the best course of action is to bully the bullyer? Let's just go back to the dark ages and eye for an eye then shall we?

Also, it's stupendously stupid to try to boil down everything that happened to the poor girl and lay it at the feet of the original dickhead who got her to show him her breasts. Attacking him is not punishing the school kids who tormented her until she killed herself.

This is all simple minded, stupid, ill thought through and makes things worse, not better.

@spoco2

I'm in no way arguing --nor is anybody else, that I see-- that this is a good model moving forward for dealing with bad guys. My question was whether this particular video should be sifted. I wanted to sift it for its topicality, its newsworthiness, and the fodder for discussion it would provide. At the same time, I could see people objecting to its presence on the site since it's also a call for flash mob vigilante justice from a group not selected by the public.

First: I want to applaud @messenger for his sensitivity to the sift by posting this discussion before posting the controversial video.

Second: I've loved Anonymous since they first came to my attention by their opposition to Scientology.

Third: This is not the way for them to confront this issue. It seems obvious to me that they should have first taken the evidence to the authorities in canada. IF the authorities had not pursued prosecution in a timely manner--Then take the evidence to the public web.

Fourth: This video would not be a good addition to the sift. Videos about this (e.g. TYT's--or other news sites--take on the subject) would be a better choice. A report about the Anonymous video brings the subject up for discussion without being a direct threat of vigilantism.

I think it would be better to post videos about this issue than the current (possibly erroneous) video from Anonymous.

Then it's clear! He did it. Send Dexter after him now!
