A look into the damage system of Star Citizen
lucky760says...

I've always wondered: What happens to all those laser blasts that miss the target and are pointed out toward open space?

Do they just continue on forever until they hit something (asteroid, planet, star, alien spaceship) or get sucked into a black hole?

(Pretty awesome gaming technology btw.)

The energy would decay and would fizzle out eventually, for a pretty far range i would guess. Theoretically, the Death Star beam could go out for several thousands of years if it didn't hit anything.

Though for the game, there is a set range for laser blasts and they vanish at the range.

Only if absorbed by matter. Assuming the beam isn't collimated absolutely perfectly, the beam would eventually spread and drop in power.

Well, taking into consideration that these appear to be stable and contained laser bullets, rather than beams, I think it wouldn't be far-fetched to assume that they could travel magic light years through space until they collided with magic, at which point they would likely lose some marginal magical momentum and also generate secondary or even tertiary magic. Also I guess magic.

First half of that wasn't all that impressive -- seemed like pretty normal impact decals and bump maps.

...And then the second part came in, with location based damage and parts flying off, not to mention the weapon impacts spinning the ship around in zero G. Went from "meh" to "OK, pretty damn cool"!

yea fair call, there's probably no incentive for them to complete it, considering they are making millions by not completing it

If it's that easy to get your ship completely fucked, I can't imagine this "game" being fun. ...If it's ever completed...
