What happens if you reverse sex roles in advertising?

From Buzzfeed---sorta funny.
newtboysays...

Ahhhhh....but the hot guy was only hot to straight women and gay men...the hot women were hot to almost everyone.

Januarisaid:

Oh i assure you... that guy was pretty damn hot too... that doesn't make it less ridiculous.

chingalerasays...

What happens when you stop watching advertising all-together? Try it for a week. Wearing a blindfold and earplugs when you leave the house might help. Better yet, stay home and smash your television.

EvilDeathBeesays...

I upvoted for the hilarious fake ads, not for the stupid message at the end.

If women responded to men as men responded to women in the same undressed way, they would use more almost naked men in advertising (if they're trying to sell something other than tampons, yoghurt or cleaning supplies to women). But an attractive man in a well tailored suit is eye candy for women like an attractive woman in lingerie is eye candy for men.

EDIT: I don't mean there's no sexism in advertising. Those stupid Axe/Lynx ads are exactly that, but just an attractive half naked lady, I don't think is

bmacs27says...

That actually wasn't particularly weird. If those had just been ads, and not put I this context, I wouldn't have thought anything of it. You probably would have sold fewer chips though.

My_designsays...

It would have been more awkward if it had been real life vs. what they "sell" us. Believe me, me in a swimsuit eating a Hardees' burger is just going to lead to a lot of people never eating Hardees again.

JustSayingsays...

I only upvoted because I'm a sexist pig (titties!). The video fails in two points.
1. The nerdy guy in the second ad isn't hot by any definition (sorry dude) but the nerdy girl is just an attractive woman wearing glasses. Is it really so hard to find an ugly woman? Seriously, can we please stop that stupid idea that glasses make people ugly? And no, I don't wear any.
2. Why do men look ridiculous in these ads and womwen don't? What a stupid question.
Imagine a very attractive woman wearing nothing but knee high socks posing in different ways. Most of these possible poses will look more or less sexual/sexy, a few vulgar and even fewer acrobatic/weird. There will very, very, very few poses where she's going to look stupid.
Now imagine a very attractive man wearing nothing but knee high socks posing the same way. How many poses can you picture in your mind until you reach one that looks ridiculous? How many can you imagine that don't look ridiculous at all?
And now, for the extra challenge, imagine the guy having a huge erection. Yep, it get's harder (not an intended pun).
The male body with it's floppy dong is as naturally ridiculous as the female body is naturally sexy. It's very deeply ingrained in our human minds. That's why most jokes about homosexuality make make men their butt (yes, that pun was intended and I think it's pure genius, thankyouverymuch).

All those ads actually worked really well haha, kind of threw off that tack on message at the end.

Actually that burger one I think worked even better

So I guess the answer is, it's ok to see both men and women in ridiculous situations? Oops.

Thumpersays...

I don't see what is so ridiculous about this. Except that poor ol women have positioned themselves to capitalize with selling their bodies. To be fair - the hot ones did this, and they've been doing it since the beginning. I would love to live in a world where men could sell their bodies and sexiness. Oh, wait, we do. It's just women get more of the pie then men do. This pisses me off, is the modeling industry just so sexually biased that we men can't get a fair shake? Never bed a feminist - it's gross.

bmacs27says...

What you mean to say is that the nerdy guy is appreciably overweight, and the nerdy girl is not. And you are correct, even this forward thinking video could not bring itself to put an overweight woman on camera.

You poor man you, maybe you should join a christian support group for the discriminated. Or better, tell someone at FoxNews about the injustice you have to suffer.
Quick, name all jobs where women get paid more than men and then start naming all (yes, all of them) where men get paid more.
The only ones where women make more I can name involve sex. They do because men (like me) are pigs and, unlike women, are willing to spend huge amounts of money on it. That's why models get a lot of cash, men like to look at their well formed, half or more naked bodies.
And before I forget...
Never bed a man who won't bed self-respecting women - he's weak.

Yeah, I also thought the reversal was fairly seamless. Didn't seem strange at all.

I assume you mean 'professional' jobs, because staff labor usually has a set income that doesn't change much from day 1, and everyone starts at the set pay.

In professional positions, every employee negotiates their own salary.
Men aggressively job hop to build up a resume and then capitalize on it.
Men are more aggressive about asking for large incomes, being 'ok' with being turned down multiple times in order to land a sweet deal.
The majority of men I know that are in professional positions deliberately behaved like this to build up their income as early as possible.

I don't know a single woman that job hopped. All of them got a job, and sat on their hands. When job hunting, they kept looking for large 'stable' employers, where they can chill for a while.

Truth is, once an employer has you for $X amount, they have no reason to give you more. Other than a pittance raise to track inflation and make you feel happy at the end of the year (so they can keep you). Which is a joke, since changing jobs can bump your income 30% per flip (30% is me amortizing. My first flip was on the order of 100%. But subsequent flips raise the bar less and less, up to the industry maximum. So I just picked a 30% ball park figure.).

Basically, the income argument bugs me, because I (and others like me) go through the [disruptive to one's life] effort of building up a resume to leverage for negotiating a good income, and other people expect the same income to just fall into their lap.

In any case, what Thumper said is true. Women have the ability to capitalize on their looks, because men provide a demand.
Women provide a weak demand for men's looks, so men can't capitalize to the same extent.
If you're a good looking girl, and you wind up broke and hopeless, you can always become a stripper, pay the bills, and turn your life around.
If you're a man, regardless of how you look (or a low-digit woman), and you wind up broke and hopeless, you simply don't have that kind of reliable way out.

Yes, men have a harder time to make cash as strippers than women but the income discrepancy isn't caused by negotiation tactics. It is a fact that women are generally paid less for equal work. There are exceptions where women are paid more (sex workers) and some where they're paid equal (for example my employer pays equally at least in my profession) but in general women get less.
And that needs to change.
