McCain Concedes Loss to Obama

McCain's speech conceding loss of election.
mauz15says...

If you had only been as authentic during the campaign as you were during this speech McCain...tsk

btw, notice how as soon as McCain mentions Obama we get a series of boohs. But when Obama talked about the call he received from McCain we get respectful acclamations.

Just saying.

With you as well Mauz... i always suspected this John McCain lurked somewhere... just wish we had seen him a little more...

I have to say, I'm really really excited about all that happened tonight, but I can't also help keep thinking about Palin going home. God, I really hope that the idiots who supported her can now take a better look and understand just how unappealing she was to SO many people.

I've been rooting for Obama for a while now, but John McCain's eloquent speech tonight showed me why people vote for him, and why so many respect the man. It was the first time I had really seen that side of him. I think if he came across that way through more of the campaign then maybe... well... John McCain said he won't dwell on Ifs. I won't either.

I think America made a good choice tonight.

Edit: The whole the speech is on youtube if you missed it. I think it's worth it to hear the whole thing.

I'm hoping they don't, so that she's the nominee in 2012 and gets easily crushed again.

I can't believe how rude some people were in the audience. I don't recall other concession speeches from years past being that way.

McCain gave a very eloquent and admirable speech. Just too bad he couldn't have brought that energy to his campaign speeches. I blame the campaign managers for screwing up his chances for election. That and his VP candidate, age, and flip-flopping statements. But why worry about it? Looks like we've got ourselves a great new president come Jan. 20th!

Saw John Bolton on BBC's coverage of the election last night speaking about Palin and if Mccain did much wrong in his campaign. He was being typical John Bolton (read asshole), but what struck me most was his (and plenty of conservatives) complete misunderstading of why Mccain lost. He was saying things like "Mccain didnt attack enough", "He wasn't negative enough" and "Paling was a great choice, she energised the base". These are EXACTLY the reasons why he lost (excluding of course Bush and the economy). By choosing Palin and going all negative and hardline, he COMPLETELY LOST the centre. Sure he maybe secured the base but a. the conservative base isnt big enough to win elections anymore and b. who the hell is the base going to vote for apart from the republicans anyway? If there was any republican who could've won this post-Bush election, it was Mccain, but he pissed it away by going for Karl Rove type tactics and destroying years of being a fairly independent senator with across the board appeal. I hope he has LOOOONG regrets about this.

I'm telling you, McCain is cool.
It's just the party and demographic that surrounds him that has no class.

I've read the biography of this gentleman-- I don't think with his history, I could ever regard the man as 'cool.' The fact alone that he voted against Martin Luthor King Jr. Day until after what, '87??? blows my mind. I can't think of single issue on which he hasn't changed his stance depending on which way the political wind is blowing. In the end his speech was lovely, but wholly political, and devoid of heart. Maybe he just wanted to save some face in the hapstance that something aweful should happen to President Obama.

omnistegansays...

I am actually starting to like Mccain. He sounded better here than he did in any of his campaign in my opinion.
The real problem is that it is his fan club and running mate that I really can't stand.

As Wanda Sykes said,
"Who will the black people blame all the bad stuff in their lives on? If Obama wins, they can't blame the 'Man' if they (black people) are the 'Man'"
Note: Wanda Sykes voted for Obama! (or so she says.)

... Well, it was funny when she said it...

Has anyone ever considered that McCains party wanted to loose.

Just a thought but….

Everyone knows that there are a lot of things that have gone so wrong in and for the US in the past 8 years. The War, The economy, Healthcare and the aging baby boomer population etc.

We ALL know some major change and fixing is needed, and it IS going to be messy business. Who ever starts trying to fix things will have problems and gain some bad press. Change doesn’t come over night and some of the initiatives will take years to show progress.

Why not sabotage your campaign. Let the other guys win, Let the other guys implement change, Let the other guys make some mistakes, Let the other guys get the bad press and take the fall.

Then, just before the effects of change are stating to take hold, Step back into the ring and SAVE everyone from the “other guys”, who are obviously making a mess of things, and close a few doors, make a few speeches and then sit back and reap the benefits of the changes created and look like the good guys.

They could come in riding white horses and white hats and SAVE THE DAY!
They don’t have to get their hands dirty. They get to sit back for a couple years.
And they still win.

Just a though I’ve been having…

As an Arizonan, I can tell you McCain is a pretty good guy. He's done a lot of good, and actually has been a "maverick" and "reached across party lines" often. Unfortunately, as soon as he won the republican nomination you could almost see the strings pulling him. Everything from then, until Nov. 4th was completely unlike himself. It's been painfully clear McCain was just another puppet, dancing to the tune of the right. I think it's obvious he's just as relieved as the rest of us that he lost. He would've followed that pied piper straight to his lonely, stressful grave. A grave I fear Cindy would've helped Palin dance on. This speech is the most like himself he's sounded for over a year. I don't think the republicans wanted him to lose, I think he himself wanted to lose.

And I think he's just as disgusted as the rest of us about the "Boo"-ing of our new President. Fucking despicable.

On a side note: I live pretty much down the street from the Biltmore Resort where this 'celebration' was. My girlfriend and I walked over to a restaurant in the mall adjacent to the Biltmore for dinner on the 4th and the police presence was incredible. They pretty much blocked off every street in the area, causing a traffic jam for at least an hour on the main road (Camelback) and screaming at any civilian who approached their motorcycles. We even had to trample some Bushes just to get around three motorcycle cops who decided to park and talk on the sidewalk we used to get home. When I heard Obama was holding his celebration in a public park in Chi town I thought that pretty much illustrated the difference between these two candidates.

Side side note: A place on the corner opposite the Biltmore named Oscar Taylor that has a predominantly black customer base was partying into the wee hours. Shouting to the crowds gathered to watch McCain's motorcade go by, "Vote Obama!!!" It was pretty awesome.

Throbbinsays...

^Sagemind - I had similar thoughts at the beginning. I originally thought the Republicans knew they were going to lose this one, and put McCain forward because they couldn't have Romney, Thompson, or Giuliani losing *GASP* to a black man. It would have too much impact on "teh base" if that were to happen, so the hard-core righ-wingnutters put forth McCain as the sacrificial lamb.

However, I don't think your suspicions could translate into a real "plan". The spectre of Bush will haunt us forever - and rest assured that in 2012 there will be many, many Democratic Ads out featuring Bush, Cheney, Palin, Bolton, Rumsfeld, and Gonzalez. That's not too far off, and we will never forget that Obama is a better President than those people were.

It is certainly worth to watch as it puts things more in context. There were many boos, but there were also congratulatory cheers in the crowd. Not that it makes it any less despicable or more acceptable, especially compared to the Obama's support's reaction when Obama spoke of John McCain.

Also, I hate Sarah Palin, but she more likely teared up when the crowd screamed support for her, not because she was thinking about the loss.

Did I just defend Sarah Palin? I feel dirty now.

If McCain had run his campaign honorably, been like this the whole time, and picked a viable VP, then he would have had a shot.

Frankly, this speech sounded a lot to me like he was glad to be done with the bullshit, attacks, and lies.

has this election damaged the reputation of "Rovian" tactics more than anything else? i fucking hope so. just look at the difference in Condi and McCain when the pressure is off. It's exactly like fresh air.

thats what I was getting at as well, the Republicans just totally missed the boat with what the majority of the electorate would respond to. Divide and rule was effective when you could bludgeon the electorate into submission with "Support us or the terrorists win" type bullshit. But now that people have realised that there are more important problems out there, that no longer works. Thank the gods.

Asmosays...

Call it what you will, he appealed to the marginal lowest common denominator rather than the majority.

Obama extended the invite to everyone, even those who despised him.

It's pure ignorance to go in to an election after the 8 years you've had (particularly the last 6 months) and appeal to a small slice of the voters. Not sure which staffer (or McCain himself) had that synaptic misfire, but c'est la vie.

Or mebbe it was the harpy on the side... =)

Either which way, I don't think he could deliver a bad speech at this point (it would just be crass and tasteless, and we know people who aspire to the role of President of the USA don't do that sort of thing... ; D.

I think the thing that would have made me buy it as genuine would have been to actually rebuke the yahoos in the audience booing, to at least not be a bunch of sore losers.

Speaking of which...

1. This is the Southwest, so if the stereotype holds true, they were all a bunch of rootin' tootin' Yosemite Sam cowboys.
2. This was more passionate of a campaign than most before, on both sides. These people had the same mentality of supporters of a World Series team

picture an obama-loss chicago
I have experienced the other side already
Walking through Five Points from class (ATL, boy was it a party) I was harangued by a few black men, asking "How does it feel to have a black president?!" I reminded them that we have a white president, but a black president elect.

Obama is a blessing, a warning and wake-up call. Like the pied piper, he has led the rats and turncoats off the USS True Conservative. Despite his rudderless ways, McCain would've been a nice alternative to the coming multiple and needless messes to come (liberals always learn the hard way, when they learn at all) but now with only taxocrats as far as the eye can see running things, all the pressure of reality is on you libs.

The spiel that sold the used clunker won't keep it running off the lot.

McCain is a phony and this is just an act. The sad reality is that Palin actually helped his then dead campaign.. maybe only for a min. but it did. This bitter son of a bitch is playing the high road.. but his folks are throwing his pal Palin under the bus now as we speak
