How Germans on the Autobahn React to Ambulance Siren

The hard shoulder in britain is used for stopping in the event of emergencies and such - breakdowns, that kind of thing. Probably not a great idea to drive down it and get stuck behind a dead car.

Whats the emergency lane for then?

Germans take their driving very seriously. They don't screw around on the road, and you can get fined for all sorts of stupid behavior we get away with in the US (e.g. you can get fined/arrested for showing someone the German equivalent of 'the bird').
When I was living there, the driving age was 18 and to get your license you had to pay around $2000 for the driving school you had to go to, which was very comprehensive.

General Chang: "To be or not to be?" That is the question which preoccupies our people, Captain Kirk. We need breathing room.

Captain James T. Kirk: Earth, Hitler, 1938.

That's how we roll.

*sigh* If only we could do that here. I've pulled over for ambulances only to have the car behind me dash around me suddenly and head-on into the ambulance. Right in front of the hospital too. You'd think that medical looking think on the back of my Jeep would be a giveaway that I might actually pull over. Guess not.

It's not just Germany that this sort of thing happens - I saw the same thing happen here in the UK about 6 months ago. I was stuck in the traffic jam at the time, and you could see everyone pulling to the side of the road as they noticed the oncoming ambulance... it was almost as if it had been rehearsed beforehand....

I don't get it? That's perfectly normal driving etiquette. Make way for the emergency services and police? It boggles my mind that there are drivers who wouldn't do that.

Check this out then, it's far from universal:

This was not in reaction to that ambulance. People don't pull over for ambulances far too back to hear. This was something else. We all pull to the sides here too but we dont stay there.

That was what I was thinking. They were pulled over far in advance, I would guess due to a prior emergency vehicle going through. Sure there were a few stranglers trying to sneak ahead of the traffic jam some, but for the most part everyone was parted long before they would have heard the ambulance coming down the line. From the looks of the wreck they came up on at the end, I'd guess they had been waiting for some time already.

If that was true, nobody would answer their cellphone in the movie theater. Happened to me twice in the same movie yesterday.
Some people are just animals.

The Germans maintain lane discipline in their driving; this would be a continuation of that---
Almost a terrifyingly regulated society.
