"Educated" loudmouth on the Metro North Railroad

YT: This woman was talking too loud on the train when the conductor politely asked her to keep it down and stop using profanity or to take it to the vestibule. She jumped up and started yelling about how "educated" she is, proving the exact opposite.

There was an announcement a minute later asking all passengers to please not use profanity on the train, "especially those people who went to Harvard or Yale or are from Westport."

The end of this video reminded me of a baseball game I played when I was about 17. (Bear with me, there is a connection.)

Our league was broken down in your typical age fashion, and I think I was in the 16-20 bracket. I was on first base when the other teams batter walked to the plate. He was 20, and in the "I'm as old as you can get in this league, so I'm going to be an cocky twat" mindset.

I don't remember the exact count, but strike 3 was called on a ball that was low and on the outside corner of the plate.

He stood there for a solid 10 seconds just glaring at the ump until I finally said "That means you gotta walk."

He then turned and glared right at me and said "No, I got a strikeout."

I replied "That means you gotta walk.. Off the field." and pointed to his bench.

Much laughter ensued, and for the rest of the season that kid hated me. Worth it though.

I empathise with the passenger.

As we all say with every authority-vs-public video, we don't know what happened before. Maybe the passenger was just unjustly harassed by a police officer and was distraught and venting to her friend about it, then this other (in her eyes) megalomaniacal bitch comes along and tells her she's not speaking properly, and to use more "educated" language.

That would neatly explain the passenger's mood, shock and outrage.

From a Yahoon article:

After the altercation, the conductor came on the loudspeaker and reminded people to keep conversations quiet, "especially those people who went to Harvard or Yale or are from Westport."

But... You just made that up.

"Excuse me, do you know how well educated I am?" is not something you can say. Ever. Ever. Not unless you're a sociopath or a hardcore solipsist, where everyone else is probably a figment of your imagination anyway.

She just seems self-absorbed, narcissistic to the extreme. Doesn't seem like there's much here to defend.

Edited.

I did make it up. I'm saying that without any effort, I could see any number of reasonable situations in which this behaviour would be understandable. If the conductor made some comment about her "uneducated" speech, then it makes sense she'd go off about her education. A bit of empathy, that's all.>> ^Gallowflak:

Perhaps, in hindsight, it would have been better to leave her alone as no doubt this episode was more disturbing to the other passengers' peace and quiet than a simple loud-talker. If the intention of the conductor was to get the woman to be quiet, she failed utterly.
